Project: French Polynesian Restaurant

Location: 1095 6th Avenue, New York, NY

Size: Approx. 3,500 s.f.

The Restaurant la Croix (French for “the cross”) is a French Polynesian restaurant that offers traditional delicacies that are a flavorful blend of European cuisine with a tropical flare. The mezzanine floor can be rented for parties and customers can order the traditional Tahitian feast to be prepared for large groups.

The Concept The design of the restaurant draws heavy inspiration from the resorts that dot the main islands such as Bora Bora and Tahiti. Located in the south Pacific, the islands of French Polynesia offer a beautiful getaway to tourists. Special resort cabins made of local materials are often “floating” in the ocean and accessible from land by gangways, providing guests with the ocean literally at their feet. The inspiration for the concept originally came from images of the floating resort with its cabins branching off of the main gangways surrounded by water. Later translations of the concept in the floor plan developed into a cross patterned mezzanine level and very geometric architecture to the space. To balance the very straight and regular nature of the architecture, the concept of water was introduced in several ways. A ceiling installation reminiscent in both form and color of waves creates an interesting visual in the double height spaces, while features such as the double height enclosed water wall backs the bar and waving water walls partition the entry way. The concept was to translate the tropical resort into an urban environment in a very contemporary and upscale manner. Through the use of materials and visual suggestions of the cabins and the waves, la Croix is a luxurious reinterpretation of a French Polynesian getaway in an urban environment.

clientFire Electronics Inc. is an electronics product development branch of Amazon.com. Fire Electronics business goals focus on developing innovative electronics and providing affordable alternatives to tablets, phones and many other products. programThe client requires approximately 5,000 square feet of usable space in order to accommodate several conference and staff meeting rooms, two private offices, and work zones for eight full time employees, a staff pantry and self-service bar, as well as mailroom, storage and server rooms.

conceptThe concept for Fire Electronics Inc. is based on Amazon’s electronics line. The Fire electronics inspired the name of the company as well as the branding of their department. While Amazon is much more industrial in aesthetic, Fire Electronics is their more sophisticated cousin; producing sleek innovative products which is reflected in the new office. The overall scheme was inspired by an image of the Kindle Fire and the Fire Phone in a sleek advertisement, showing the glossy black tablets with the Amazon orange screen. Ultimately, the overall concept of the project is of a neutral black and white palette with plenty of pops of orange. Sleek materials, reflective surfaces and contemporary contract furnishings give the space a fun, sophisticated and modern feel.

Location: 165 East 70th Street, New York, NY

Size: Approx. 8,000 s.f.

INSPIRED BY THE POEM, SHE WALK IN BEAUTY, THE CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT EMBRACES THE ROMANTIC AND SERENE QUALITIES OF THE POEM. THE ARCHITECTURE IS A CONTEMPORARY PLAY ON THE NEOCLASSICAL STYLE. A SUBTLE COLOR PALETTE WITH RICH TEXTILES AND ECLECTIC FURNISHINGS ASSISTS IN CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ENVOKES THE IDEALS OF THE NEOCLASSICAL ERA WHILE RETAINING A CONTEMPORARY FEELING.

THE PROGRAM FOR THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL SPACE FOR A FAMILY OF FIVE. THE FAMILY’S ANTIQUES DEALING BUSINESS IS LOCATED ON THE GROUND FLOOR, LEAVING THE REMAINING THREE FLOORS FOR THE FAMILY RESIDENCE. A GRANDPARENTS SUITE WAS CREATED ON THE FOURTH FLOOR ALONG WITH AN OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE. WHILE THE OTHER TWO FLOORS WERE CONVERTED INTO THE MAIN LIVING AND ENTERTAINING AREAS.
