Maths and ScienceCongratulations to Britany Hobbs and Lachlan Darch

I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Britany Hobbs and Lachlan Darch who will participate in this year’s inaugural UniSA Maths Prize. The prize is awarded to Year 10 students who demonstrate an interest in a mathematically-based career and have achieved high grades in Mathematics.

The UniSA Maths Prize is designed to enhance students’ interest and knowledge of Maths through a one day ‘Experience’ at UniSA. The ‘Experience’ provides an opportunity for students to extend their mathematical knowledge in a fun and interactive way.

Australian Mathematics Competition

Thank you to the 28 students who participated in this year’s Australian Maths Competition. Students will receive a certificate that reflects their achievement.

SpiRit of Science

Congratulations to Lee Schultz, Heidi Jensen, Sonia Ghimire and Mr Mackey who have all been selected to participate in this year’s SpiRit of Science.

The SpiRit of Science Program is a unique opportunity for students at South Australian schools in Years 10 and 11 to travel to London at no cost to them for ten days, accompanied by two teachers, to attend the Christmas Lectures in London staged by the RiGB - Royal Institution of Great Britain. The SpiRit of Science Scholarship gives a talented group of young people a chance to develop their passion for science in a unique learning environment.

Science and Engineering Challenge

Thank you and congratulations to the 28 students who participated in this year’s Science and Engineering Challenge - a day-long competition designed to provide Year 9 and 10 students with a positive experience of Science and Engineering.

Each school team is divided into 8 groups which work on either 1 full-day activity or 2 half-day activities. (There are 8 different workshop-style activities at each Challenge.)

Students are awarded points for each activity and the school with the most cumulative points at the end of the day is declared the winner. Winning schools will subsequently compete against each other for a place in the state and - perhaps - the national competition.

LanguagesJapanese Teacher ExchangeThe Australian Science Teachers’ Association in conjunction with Sony Science Teachers’ Association Japan run annual teacher exchange programs. This year Salisbury High School was lucky enough to be a part of the program with Anita Trenwith’s Year 8 Science class running a Science show about energy for the teachers.

The students performed energy transformation demonstrations using chemical energy to produce heat, light and kinetic energy. They also ran stations of activities for the visitors including using electromagnets, sound tubes, and electrostatics activities. The students made information sheets about each station and answered questions about the energy transformations that were happening. Anita Trenwith will join the ASTA delegation to visit Japan in the September school holidays where she will have the opportunity to visit schools in Tokyo and also teach some science classes.

Year 9 KaurnaOn Wednesday 25th September the Year 9 Kaurna class and some Italian students will be performing at the Norwood Morialta Senior campus. The ‘Bringing our World together through Languages’ concert is a great opportunity to show case what our students do in Languages. Three high schools and four primary schools will participate in this event. Parents are welcome to attend.

SA Indigenous State U18 Girls Kick Start Congratulation to Jerrain Calyun and Kaylah Bishop who made the SA State U18 Indigenous Girls Kick-Start team that will participate in the 1st Indigenous carnival which will be held in Melbourne early September this year.

The girls were selected in the metro combined side from this year’s Aboriginal Power Cup

carnival which then played against a combined country team on the weekend of the SANFL Indigenous round. From that a State side was selected and by all accounts both girls performed very well during the game.

Year 8 Science Show On Tuesday 3rd September Mrs Trenwith’s Year 8 Science class went to One Tree Hill Primary School to present two science shows. The students helped demonstrate a number of experiments linked to discoveries by Australian Scientists. There were examples of sound energy linked to Professor Graeme Clark’s invention of the bionic ear and Dr David Warren’s invention of the black box fight recorder.

We had experiments with polymers linked to Dr David Solomon’s development of the polymer bank note and demonstrations with compressed gas linked to Qantas employee Jack Grant’s invention of inflatable escape slides on planes.

The students presented to children from Years 3 to Year 7 and received some lovely feedback from both the teachers and students at the school.

There were also a series of science shows presented at Virginia Primary School on our school closure day 6th September. Thank you to Jack Hamilton from Year 8 who gave up his day off to come and help run six science shows at the school. The students really enjoyed the day and again we received lovely feedback from everyone that participated.

Thank you to all the students that helped make these science shows so successful.

SRC – Operation Christmas Box

Operation Christmas Box aims to give less fortunate children, who would normally go without presents on Christmas, a simple shoe box filled with gifts. The SRC will be decorating, filling and donating shoeboxes with the help of their care classes. Each SRC member will choose the gender and age category for the contents of their box and fill it with a variety of new gifts, such as clothes, toys, stationery, games or personal hygiene items. The boxes will be collected at the end of Week 10, Term 3 and sent away in time for Christmas!

Wanted – shoe boxes If you have any shoe boxes that are no longer required we would love them. Please hand to Care Teacher or leave in the front office.

Stage 2 Chemistry12 Silver bottles standing on the bench. If one…….

The Stage 2 Chemistry class has been using their knowledge of chemistry to decorate some bottles.

The experiment is a test for a class of organic chemicals called aldehydes. When aldehydes are combined with a mixture of ammonium hydroxide and Silver nitrate in a glass bottle, the silver ions in solution are deposited as a metallic silver coating on the inside of the bottle. This

process is still used to manufacture mirrors. Look for Matthew French in the reflection in the milk bottle.

LatenessLateness continues to be a concern. Please support your child to arrive at school on time. Arriving late means valuable class time is missed and students start their day struggling. Make the best possible start by arriving on time. It shows respect for learning and ensures students make a great start to the lesson.

All students need to arrive at school by 8.40am and attend care group. Important information and follow up occurs in this time. School is a student’s workplace and should be treated accordingly.

MusicalHello, my name is Alex Kobs and I write this article to tell you about the musical.

We started rehearsal in Term 1 for one hour a week and in Term 2 and the start of Term 3 we had two rehearsals a week. We had a whole week of rehearsals in the holidays. There has been a lot of pressure and stress, but we managed to get through them okay.

The music crew did a pretty good job. That included Thomas Kong, who, like the cast, gave up a lot of his time to practice the music for each song.

The Crew did their job well and blended in the dark so well, you wouldn’t know they were there.

My mother, Cathy Kobs, worked very hard on the costumes. She did the sewing and designing and took great photos of the cast in their costumes and on stage.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were in for the most mysterious and shocking adventure of their lives. They were called to Dartmoor at the request of Virginia Huntington-Smythe for the reading of her father’s will and to investigate the suspicious nature of his death. But there were many threats along the way: menacing Chinese henchmen, threatening plotting Pirates and a myriad of mysterious characters and events from Baker Street and Waterloo Station in London to the misty moors of Dartmoor.

Cycling for culture

In October Trevor Wanganeen and Josh Coulter will join a group of cyclists who will cover nearly 300kms over 3 days and embark on a journey of discovery of Aboriginal culture to learn more about the land of the Kaurna people on which we live.

They will join former Tour de France cyclist Patrick Jonker, Aboriginal AFL footballers Gavin Wanganeen and Che Cockatoo-Collins along with Aboriginal students from the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy to undertake this challenges.

They will ride along the Tjilbruke Dreaming trail, listen to Kaurna Elders’ story-telling and gain a better understanding of the lives of the Kaurna people past and present.

Their aim is raise awareness of the importance of culture and language to the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal Communities. Along the way raising funds to enable the Kaurna community continue its work in developing the Kaurna Language. Language is an integral part of cultural knowledge transfer and individual aboriginal community identity. The Kaurna language was once thought to be dormant but has been woken up and is now a source of pride amongst Aboriginal people.

You can find out more about our journey via the following website. www.cyclingforculture.com.au

Open Korfball competitionStudents from Salisbury High went to ETSA Park on Thursday 15th August and participated in the State-wide Schools Competition. The students played extremely well with some great performances. We made the Grand Final where we played St Johns who had some league Korfball players, which made for an intriguing game. Salisbury played very well but were overpowered 6-2 by St Johns. Congratulations to all students who participated - Kimberley Haydon, Elizabeth Bertossa, Deanna Greenwood, Taylor Hurst, Abbey Morrison, Rachel Mudge, Shannon Easter, Jack Burns, Jayden Huddleston, Billy MacGowan.

Stage 2 ExamsStage 2 practice exams will be held during the first week of Term 4. Students have been given a personalised timetable which shows their scheduled exams, both practice and final.

Students are required to attend all scheduled classes unless they are sitting an exam.

Practice exams are an extremely valuable exercise that can identify gaps in your child’s learning and provide students a experience in exam conditions. The results of these practice exams will give important feedback on where they need to focus their revision on in preparation for final exams.

We wish them all the best.

Year 9 Italian

This term for our cultural immersion unit on food, we have been fortunate to have Alvise the Italian Language assistant from Treviso. The Year 9 Italian class worked collaboratively to research and prepare the making of pizza, pasta, crostata and tiramisu for dessert. Crostata is a popular Italian dessert similar to a jam tart. Tiramisu means pick me up. This dessert originated from Alvise’s hometown and he was able to demonstrate in the target language the authentic way of making it. The last few weeks were spent preparing for this magnificent celebration. The students enjoyed using the target language whilst preparing the food and had the experience of listening to Alvise speaking Italian whilst preparing the food.

Thanks to the assistance of Luke Ceko for videoing and photography, Angela and Stefanie our pre-service teachers, Renate the Home Economics Coordinator and Angela Cambareri the Home Economics assistant. The event was a grand success and everyone enjoyed the 3 course meal.

Community NewsSalisbury Little AthleticsCompetition starts 28th September at Creaser Park, Lavender Drive, Parafield Gardens. Further information available from Gaynor Garnish 0418 801 410.

Week 2 of this term was National Literacy and Numeracy week. The initiative this year by Reach for the Stars was all based around the theme “This is

Rubbish”. Students were asked to use mathematics to analyse waste in their classroom and schoolyard bins. To do this our school surveyed all year 8 classes to find out where and what type of rubbish they dispose of.

Then as part of my assessment in the year 8 link maths class I used the skills I have learnt in collating data and drawing graphs to display this information on pictograms using Microsoft Excel (see graphs below).

From the graphs it is good to see that not many students throw their rubbish on the ground and if they do it is generally food scraps which can be eaten by birds and decompose. Also lots of students are putting their food scraps in a normal bin in the yard. Maybe we need some compost bins outside and around our school.

Also to help save the environment we could place paper only bins in classrooms, so it can be recycled.
