News from our Vicar
“Waiting for the Soul to Catch Up” (the title of an article written by Terry Hershey in Trinity News, the magazine of Trinity Church - St. Paul’s Chapel in New York City) is a title that caught my eye. This unusual title comes from a story that the author quoted in which she told of an American traveler on safari in Kenya. This traveler was loaded down with maps, timetables, agendas. He had an enormous amount of supplies, luggage and “essential stuff.” He was delighted when on the first morning and then the second and the third mornings they all awoke early, traveled fast and went far into the bush. On the fourth morning, however, the porters refused to move. The American was incensed and complained that this was a waste of valuable time. He demanded to be told what was going on. The translator told him that the porters were waiting for their souls to catch up with their bodies! What a concept - waiting for our souls to catch up with our bodies. We are still in the midst of the summer season and so it is a good time for us to be
5
conscious of giving our souls the chance to catch up with our bodies. We often seem to live our lives at a frantic pace and that is true for people who are retired as well. If you do an internet search, you will even find a large assortment of book-a-minute books. The books take the important parts and eliminate all that is not considered essential so that the book can be read in a minute. Can you imagine that? How sad that we have let our lives get so very busy that we need abbreviated books since we simply do not have the time for anything else. During the remainder of this summer, take some time to slow down, take some time to review how you live your life. If you have a vacation planned during these final weeks of summer, why not include some time to simply be, to let your soul catch up with your body. If you have a few extra evenings at home because of meetings that are cancelled for the summer, do the same. We all need to take care of ourselves; we need to slow down, spending some quiet time reflecting, letting our souls catch up with our bodies. Blessings, Grayce

Confirmation Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Kirk Smith, will be worshipping with us on December 10. It is always a great honor to welcome our Bishop and even more so when we have people who are going to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. If you have been baptized and not yet confirmed, please consider being confirmed on December 10. If you have been confirmed into a different denomination, please consider being received into the Episcopal Church on December 10. If you have already been confirmed in the Episcopal Church, then consider coming to the Bishop for a Reaffirmation of your promises made at Confirmation. If you are interested, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to have an Enquirer’s Class to prepare you for Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation.

Senior Warden’s Corner
We have some interesting things coming
up on our church agenda. The Bishop’s
Committee has been busy planning new events
to keep our church active and interesting. In
the ECW news of this Newsletter, you will read
of the up and coming Ice Cream Social, a fun
event scheduled for September 9th so mark
your calendars and spread the word.
The Arizona Diocesan Convention is
September 29-30. Lee Worthen and I were
chosen as delegates. Alexa Hokanson and
Bobby Lucas were chosen as alternates.
However, anyone can go to the convention. It is
always very interesting to hear all that is going
on in the Episcopal Church world. There will be
new amendments that we will be learning
about and discussing at a coffee hour prior to
the convention. We will be voting on these new
amendments during the convention.
We are also working on a new User
Agreement Contract for people who wish to
rent our Parish Hall. Many churches rent their
Parish Hall’s for extra income to support their
8
church budget. So, if you will spread the word
that our Parish Hall is available for groups to
rent for their event, that would be very helpful.
Other churches like St. Andrew’s in Sedona,
has their Parish Hall rented almost every day of
the week for a variety of events. We can too if
organizations are made aware that our facilities
are available.
If you have any thoughts or ideas
concerning any aspect of our church, please
feel free to let any member of our Bishop’s
Committee know. They wear name tags each
Sunday so they are easy to spot.
Barbara Evans, Senior Warden
ECW Happenings:
Since the Tote Bag Raffle is going slowly,
I have made up some pictures to show and
tickets to sell to friends and neighbors outside
of our church. I have handed out these items to
congregants in an effort to increase sales.
An Ice Cream Social is scheduled for
September 9th at 4pm, during Grandparent’s
Weekend. The event will be open to our
community and will include lots of fun and
games. I will do some advertising, ECW will do
the planning and MOST will help with the ice
cream and sodas. So, mark your calendars,
9
invite your friends and neighbors and spread
the word! Let’s have some fun!!

Twice Blessed Thrift Store News
Business has been slow at our thrift
store recently. It is summer and it is hot and
that might deter people from getting out and
going shopping. So, we are trying some local
advertising. I have placed an ad in The Pine
Shadow News and Sheila Boyle will try to get
an ad in the Cottonwood Ranch Paper. That
will give us more exposure to about 500
people.
One more month of summer hours,
Friday and Saturday, 10am to 1pm and then in
September we will go back to our regular hours
which are Wednesday through Saturday from
10am to 1pm.
If you haven’t peeked in to the thrift
store lately, I would encourage you to do so.
We really have some nice things for sale!

A Word from our Treasurer
THANK YOU!!!
Indeed, Thank You! for your support of Christ’s call to St Thomas’ Episcopal Church of Clarkdale: to fellowship with each other, to help each other grow spiritually, to serve each other, to tell others about Christ here and around the world, and to worship our Lord together each Sunday. Thank You! for your offerings of your time, of your God-given talents, and of your treasure. Thank You! for your help in all that we do at St. Thomas because together, we are the Body of Christ in this place. Our offerings not only bring about blessings that nourish us as the gathered and faithful people of St. Thomas, they also help in transforming those that surround us as we move through our daily lives. When we are giving, we are being the faithful people God calls us to be. People who are caring and sharing, gracious and generous, compassionate and loving.
11
Thank You! for your faithful investment in the work of the Lord through St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Clarkdale. In His Grace, Lee Worthen, Treasurer NOTE: Mid-year statements of contributions for 2017 have been provided to those individuals or families known to the treasurer.
