He Raised His Eyes

He went to the bottom and looked up only at his disciples, even though there were thousands of other people. Not because he did not see the others, but he wanted them to see who He was watch-ing, saying his blessings. A person who, not in God but in another person, hopes for happiness, is doomed to the fatal course of their fate. Staring into mankind, we do not see the truly delighting gaze of God. Most people, at the moment of their misfortune, look around for human glances. However, there are also those who, in the same circumstances, are still more intensely staring into Christ's eyes. Extreme situations are the best lessons of happiness that God offers graciously. One can be moved intensely when they read today how Jesus raised his eyes to his disciples. By the power of this gaze, everything can be made a vessel of happiness, even hunger, sadness, hatred and cries. The Greek HEPAIRO means precisely this LIFTING of the eyes of Jesus, and it was also used in the same textual way where the Apostles' eyes are raised to Jesus when they were on the Mount of the Transfiguration. Matthew’s version, describing the transfiguration, tells how the disciples, after this ecstatic event, raised their eyes and saw no one else except Him. Jesus looked at his disciples in the same way - as if there was nothing worth seeing in the world beyond them. The tax collector did not dare raise his eyes to God when he stood at the back of the temple, because he was ashamed of his sins. Raising your eyes, in this case, would be putting oneself over embar-rassment, that is, to not feel any uncertainty about your worth. A rich man who day by day had a great time and never saw the leper Lazarus at the gates of his palace, only in Hell did he raise his eyes to the beggar who would spend an eternity in the bosom of Abraham. Raising eyes means, therefore, also to perceive what is not perceived, to distinguish what is omitted. It is also to understand your confusion in sin, as pointed out in the Book of Daniel, speaking about the conversion of Nebuchadnezzar in the wilderness. Before he began to pray, confessing his pride, he raised his eyes to heaven.

Undoubtedly, Jesus, raising his eyes to his disciples, distinguishes them. In the Gospel of John, right after the conversion of the Samaritan woman, Jesus turns to his disciples and says: “Lift up your eyes and see how the fields are already white for harvest, but the workers are few.” Raising eyes also means the ability to see reality more clearly, the ability to read signs. With our eyes raised, meaning able to see the deepest content, we can discover our mission and mobilize ourselves to action. So when Jesus raises his eyes, we cannot see the usual glance, but we should raise our eyes ourselves and understand that His gaze was more than meaningful.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an as-sisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax (word or-der), and vocabulary. For this reason, the Ameri-can Catholic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full participation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is noth-ing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. PAGE 5 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 17, 2019

The Sixth Week in Ordinary Time On the Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time we hear Luke's account of the Beatitudes and warnings, as Jesus proclaims the blessings he offers us and the warnings he gives us. It all is about accepting discipleship now ver-sus choosing our own way now. Friday is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter and Saturday is the Memorial of St. Polycarp. We continue with first readings from the Book of Genesis. This is the beginning of the story of salvation: Cain and Abel, Noah and the Ark, the Tower of Babel. The week concludes with the Letter to the Hebrews' summary of the faith of our ancestors in the faith. As we follow Jesus' ministry in Mark’s Gospel, we wit-ness Jesus' discouragement as he again encounters the challenges of the religious leaders: "he sighed from the depth of his spirit." As they retreat to the other side of the lake, Jesus warns his disciples against the rebellious "leaven" of the Pharisees and reminds them of the meaning of the miracle of the loaves - he is like God, come to feed them in whatever desert journey they encounter. Jesus heals a blind man who first sees only in a distorted way - a scene which begins the journey to Jerusalem on which Je-sus tries to heal the blindness of his disciples. Peter ac-knowledges Jesus as the Christ but rejects Jesus' instruc-tion that he must suffer and die before the resurrection. Jesus rebukes him and instructs his disciples about their discipleship. It is about taking up our own cross with him: "whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it." Then Jesus takes Peter, James and John and shows them his glory, to prepare them for the scandal of the cross. On the Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time we hear Luke's account of the difference discipleship means in the real lives of Jesus' followers: loving your enemies, turning the other cheek, doing to others what we'd want them to do for us, being merciful as our Father is merciful, forgiving as we wish to be forgiven, measuring out our generosity as we would wish to receive it.

Daily Prayer This Week We can feel the tension in this week's readings. Jesus is trying to warn his disciples - and us - about the rebellious style of the Pharisees, about hypocrisy. And, he is trying to heal the blindness of his disciples - and us - about what his mission is all about. He has come to free us from sin and the captivity we have to all kinds of self-centered patterns. So when we stay reflective this week, we can become more conscious of how we rebel from the path of Jesus, from join-ing him in becoming less selfish. When we begin our days this week, we can ask, "Lord, help me see the ways I'm too self-centered this week. Help me notice the needs of those you place in my life. Stretch my heart to love more today." It is simple, but it begins to change our focus. As we go through the week, we can pay closer attention to our resistance, the places we catch ourselves holding back. We can open our eyes to see the patterns in our lives that we might not have paid attention to before. It doesn't have to be serious evil we are choosing. It might just be ways in which we are avoiding losing our lives for him. Once we focus, start paying attention to the daily choices we make, our day becomes a day of prayer. We can be in communion with the Lord throughout the day because it becomes a day of dia-logue, in the midst of all the busyness. "Lord, as I put on this sweater, I'm aware how I just spoke to Helen. I'm sorry. That was all about my fear, wasn't it? I cut her off because I was just afraid of what she was asking of me. I became more aware of the cost to me than anything else. Please help me to continue to see how I respond to people. Please calm my fears." We can get in the habit of doing this kind of prayer every day, right where we are, in very brief moments. Finding intimacy with God in the midst of our daily lives is the goal of this kind of prayer. All of this is reinforced by our prayer of gratitude each night. if we are liking this kind of communion with our Lord each day, and thank-ing God for it each night, there is no question that we will be developing a new pattern in our life. We tend to continue to do what we enjoy. And grati-tude feeds even more openness and generosity.

“But who do you say that I am?”

Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Christ.” ~Mark 8

Witness to the Gospel

We, the parishioners of St. Fabian Parish strive to be good witnesses to the Gospel and good disciples of Jesus. The Spirituality of Stewardship offers us an important opportunity to witness to the Gospel and to be good disciples of Christ. As stewards we are grateful for God’s gifts and we seek to enhance our God given gifts and then give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent and treasure.

Further, the life of a Christian steward is lived

as a disciple of Christ. As the U.S. Bishops point out in their pastoral letter on stewardship, "Following Jesus is the work of a lifetime. At every step forward, one is challenged to go further in accepting and loving God's will. Being a disciple is not just something else to do, alongside many other things suitable for Christians, it is a total way of life and requires continuing conversion."

This "total way of life" is reflected in a number

of characteristics, all found perfectly in Jesus, and therefore all key to anyone who desires to grow as a Christian steward. By learning more about these characteristics, it is hoped that Chris-tian disciples can apply this knowledge to their stewardship way of life. While there are many characteristics that could be identified for stew-ards striving to follow Jesus, the following ten seem essential: prayer, humility, trust, pa-tience, responsibility, gratitude, generosity, simplicity, mercy, and perseverance.

These characteristics will be presented indi-

vidually over the weeks ahead in our bulletin and website. Please read them and reflect on them to grow your relationship with God.

Stewardship, the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, Ks. for their permission to use these articles.

Two little words, but they mean so much. The Confirmation Class Bake Sale was a huge success! We raised a total of $2,257.00 that will help fund

our Vacation Bible School this year! We could not have done that without the support of everyone!

To all the wonderful bakers who donated such delicious treats, to the students who staffed the sale along with their catechists, to the generous people who purchased the goodies, and to all

who stopped by to lend their support, we send a heartfelt thank you! May God abundantly bless

each of you.

Jest on podobny do dzikiego krzaka na stepie. Nie dostrzega, gdy przychodzi szczêœcie. Wybiera miejsca spalone na pustyni, ziemiê s³on¹ i bezludn¹. Oto S³owo Bo¿e.

PSALM RESPONSORYJNY: Ps 1,1-2.3 4 i 6 B³ogos³awiony, kto zaufa³ Panu.

sprawiedliwych, a droga wystêpnych zaginie. B³ogos³awiony, kto zaufa³ Panu.

Oto S³owo Bo¿e.

ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGE-LI¥: £k 6,23ab Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja Cieszcie siê i radujcie, bo wielka jest wasza nagroda w niebie. Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja

EWANGELIA £k 6,17.20-26 B³ogos³awieni ubodzy, biada bogaczom

S³owa Ewangelii wed³ug œwiêtego £ukasza Jezus zeszed³ z dwunastoma Aposto³ami na dó³ i zatrzyma³ siê

na równinie. By³ tam du¿y poczet Jego uczniów i wielkie mnóstwo ludu z ca³ej Judei i z Jerozolimy oraz z wybrze¿a Tyru i Sydonu. A On podniós³ oczy na swoich uczniów i mówi³: „B³ogos³awieni jesteœcie wy, ubodzy, albowiem do was nale¿y królestwo Bo¿e. B³ogos³awieni wy, którzy teraz g³odujecie, albowiem bêdziecie nasyceni. B³ogos³awieni wy, którzy teraz p³aczecie, albowiem œmiaæ siê bêdziecie. B³ogos³awieni bêdziecie, gdy ludzie was znienawidz¹ i gdy was wy³¹cz¹ spoœród siebie, gdy zel¿¹ was i z powodu Syna Cz³owieczego podadz¹ w pogardê wasze imiê jako niecne: cieszcie siê i radujcie w owym dniu, bo wielka jest wasza nagroda w niebie. Tak samo bowiem przodkowie ich czynili prorokom. Natomiast biada wam, bogaczom, bo odebraliœcie ju¿ pociechê wasz¹. Biada wam, którzy teraz jesteœcie syci, albowiem g³ód cierpieæ bêdziecie. Biada wam, którzy siê teraz œmiejecie, albowiem smuciæ siê i p³akaæ bêdziecie. Biada wam, gdy wszyscy ludzie chwaliæ was bêd¹.
