MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

WITHOUT PRIESTS THERE CAN BE NO MASS!

Pray for Vocations to the Priesthood, especially among the young men of our Parish and of our Archdiocese!

Page 3: Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church · 2020. 12. 23. · Our Auction theme of "Jurassic Park" has been turned into "Help Save Jurassic Park!" Although Auction night won't be the same,

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Merry Christmas! Now that the holy season of Christmas is upon us, we have much to celebrate and we have a long time to celebrate it - as if the celebration of the birth of the Savior of the world can be limited to a day or even a few days! I hope that you had a happy & blessed celebration of Christ-mas! Even though all of us have had to make changes to our regu-lar routine of holiday things, I pray that the glory of Christ's birth more than compensated for whatever accommodations we had to make. I want to thank all those who helped make Christmas at St. Rose as wonderful as it was, and for all of you who were able to make it to Christmas Mass at St. Rose this year. Sometimes we take it for granted that big crowds of people will show up for Christ-mas and Easter - and you don't know what you got 'til it's gone! We missed having Midnight Mass this year, but I promise it'll be back next year. "Thank You!" to our servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, our Deacons, ushers, cantors and organists; and to all of our church decorators and flower donors. You're the best! "Thank You!", too, to all of our Giving Tree donors, to the SRLS 7th & 8th graders who sorted everything out, and to Kenny Mer-seal, John Rogers, & Joe Valle who transported everything to their designated places. More than 400 tags were taken and loads of Christmas gift items were returned. I wondered if we would be able to do well this year - why should I have doubted?! You're wonder-ful! "Thank You!" to the Knights of Columbus for the live Nativity on Main Street - what a great and long-lasting DeSoto tradition! At a time when we need 'normal' more than usual, thanks for having it there! And "Thanks!" too, to all of the Main Street merchants for the time and effort of the Main Street Nativity Walk. What a great way to Keep Christ in Chrismtas! One great gift to America and to the world is the development and the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine. What a great Christ-mas gift that was! I hope and pray the promise of turning the cor-ner on the virus will ease some of the hopelessness, stress and anxiety that we've been living with for so long. Thank you, God, for such a step forward. Now that Christmas has arrived, I encourage you to keep cele-brating it as long as you can. The Church celebrates Christmas until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord which is on January 10th. Don't kick your tree to the curb or put your nativity back in its box. Keep Christmas up as long as you can - we all certainly need it!

THIS WEEK'S Q.U.O.T.E “I can’t do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God.”

St. Dominic Savio

"Welcome!" All of us at St. Rose extend a warm and heartfelt "Welcome!" to Claira Josephine Baisch, daughter of

Desirae Dean and the late Jeremy Baisch, was baptized at St. Rose on Sunday, December 13th. May her Catholic faith bring her and her family nothing but grace and peace.

HELP SAVE JURASSIC PARK!

Although we're not going to be able to have our annual St. Rose of Lima School Auction in the same way we've had it before, we're hoping to save as much of it as we can! And although because of all of the COVID-19 restrictions and worries the Auction may look a little different than it has in years past, we still need it to be a big success! Our Auction theme of "Jurassic Park" has been turned into "Help Save Jurassic Park!" Although Auction night won't be the same, we'll still need sponsors and donors and bidders. Instead of high-end items, we're looking for 100 - 150 more affordable baskets and items at $25 - $75. Hopefully the revamping of the Auction raffle will help draw support and generosity. Instead of a 50/50 raffle, we're going to have $5 tick-ets (6 for $25) with multiple prizes: starting with a $2,500 first prize ("Thank You!" anonymous donor!); $1500 second prize; third prize is a quarter side of beef ("Thank You!" to the Reando's!); fourth prize is $1,000; and fifth prize is $500! Whew! Lots of chances to win and win big! Bidding will be on-line and/or in person. The Auction preview will begin February 7th, and on-line bidding will be from February 21st until February 28th. Instructions on how to pre-view and bid on-line will be in the parish Auction mailing that will go out to everyone on January 19th. On what would have been Auction night (Saturday, March 6) the KC Hall will be open and all of the Auction baskets and items will be on display - all spaced apart - and you can bid on individual items beginning at 5:00 pm. At 7:00 pm the bidding will end and the raffle winners will be drawn. Short and sweet! But, hopefully, also very suc-cessful! The Knights of Columbus have offered to have the Club Room open for food and drinks that night and a pork steak dinner will be available. Mike Merseal will put together a band for live music in the Club Room that night too. There will be no Auction book or ads or other ways for us to raise money for St. Rose School other than the raffle, the silent auction baskets and items, and donations to Adopt-An-Angel. For that reason, I especially encourage ALL of our Parishioners to consider contrib-uting to the Adopt-An-Angel envelope which is always in your enve-lope packet the weekend of the Auction. Please do whatever you can to "Help Save Jurassic Park!" In these pandemic times, we all have to adjust. All of these chang-es, pray God, are for this year only, and we'll be back to Jurassic Park II in 2022. In the meantime, I'm putting it into the Lord's hands, and what better place could it be?! "Thanks!" in advance for whatever you can do to help. I know there's always the danger of going to the well too often, but what better cause is there at St. Rose of Lima than our wonderful School and providing an affordable, quality Catholic educa-tion for our children?! St. Rose of Lima, pray for us and help us!

CALENDARS ARE HERE! "Thanks!" again to Todd Mahn

for this year's St. Rose wall calendars.

St. Rose Parish was blessed to receive copies of "I Heard God Laugh" by Matthew Kelly for all of our Parishioners as a Christ-mas gift from Cyle and Abby Huck. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Keep the gifting going by passing on the book to

someone else once you're finished reading it.

one on the tree, you're good to go! If not - or if you want to sup-ply a new one - please feel free to do so. Just lay it on the St. Joseph altar or hang it on the tree.

ST. ROSE CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS If you would like a statement of your contributions to St. Rose for 2020, please call Corie (636-337-2212) at the rectory or drop a note into the Sunday collection. You need not supply a self-addressed stamped envelope. All 2020 contributions must be received by January 31 and IRS regulations stipulate that checks must be dated 2020.

SUNDAY BULLETIN EARLY DEADLINES:

We have yet another early bulletin deadline because of the New Year holiday. Accordingly, if you have a notice you want in the bulletin please get it in early so that it can be included as soon as possible. In addition, our weekly financial report may be delayed as well. We regret any inconvenience.

A number of people have begun using the 'on-line giving' option on our Parish website. In order to give a more accurate accounting, beginning the first of the year we'll start indicating the amount

we receive from these on-line contributions in our weekly Sunday collection bulletin report. The amount received from the 'on-line giving' will be noted in the list and added to the total amount received each week.

NEW YEAR'S MASSES On January 1st the Catholic Church not only celebrates the New Year, it is also the solemnity of the Motherhood of Mary. It is a holy day of obligation. However, because of COVID-19, Archbishop Rozanski has extended the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation to cover holy days of obligation as well. Masses here at St. Rose for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are 5:00 pm on Thursday, December 31st, and 7:00 am, 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Friday, January 1st. In spite of the pandemic, what better way is there to begin the New Year than by giving praise and honor to Almighty God at Mass!

As we continue to celebrate the great feast of Christmas, be sure ot take some time to visit the Knights of Columbus live nativity which they set up on the lawn of Mahn Funeral Home on Main Street. We owe the Knights a debt of gratitude for all of their time and effort. And while you're at it, take some additional time and visit the Nativity Walk along the shops on Main Street where almost all of the businesses are displaying a Nativity. "Thank You!", ladies and gentlemen, for helping all of us "Keep Christ in Christmas!"

Please Pray for the Sick SAINT of the WEEK

In the Opening Prayer of the Mass on the feast of St. Thom-as, we pray, “Almighty God, you granted the martyr Thomas the grace to give his life for the cause of justice”. The justice Thomas died for was the right of the Church to be free from control by the government. Thomas was born in 1118 in London. He studied law and be-came an assistant to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas met influential people in the Church and the government. The archbish-op trusted him and sent him to Rome several times on Church mat-ters. Thomas was also ordained as a deacon. That same year, a new king was crowned in England, Henry II. Thomas and Henry became good friends. Henry appointed Thomas the chancellor of England, an important position in the government. A large salary came with the job, and Thomas began to live like a wealthy man. After the archbishop died, King Henry decided to have Thomas take his place. Thomas was ordained a priest, then a bishop. Thomas took his vocation and his new responsibilities seriously. He changed the way he was living. He welcomed the poor into his house and served them meals himself. Thomas and King Henry began to disagree about the power the king had over the Church. They argued over unfair taxes on Church lands. They argued about whether priests accused of crimes should be tried by the Church or government court. Thomas was forced to go into hiding out of the country for over six years. When he returned to England in 1170, the situation had not improved. Four knights overheard King Henry say, “Will I never be rid of this priest?” So the knights decided to kill Thomas. They drew their swords and attacked him in the cathedral at Canterbury on December 29, asking “Where is the traitor?” Thomas replied, “Here I am, no traitor, but archbishop and priest of God.” As word of his murder spread through the land, the cathedral filled with people mourning their archbishop. Within two years, Pope Alexander III declared him a saint. St. Thomas Beckett is buried at Canterbury, and many people visit his grave each year to pray to the man of God who stood up for the fair treatment of the Church and its people. We can honor St. Thomas by praying for all Catholics who are not free to live their faith. His feast day is De-cember 29. He was canonized on February 21, 1173.

When St. Rose School is not in ses-sion during the Christmas break, there will not be an 8:00 am Mass on Wednesdays or Fridays. If you're plan-

ning ahead, that's December 30th & January 1st. I regret any inconvenience. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

This image of Santa kneeling before the crib has become a staple of Christmas sentiments. Here is a poem that goes with it:

The sleigh was all packed, the rein-

deer were fed, But Santa still knelt by

the side of his bed,

“Dear Father, ” he prayed, “Be with

me tonight. There’s much function to do

and my schedule is tight.

My sack will hold toys to grant all

kids’ wishes. The supply will be endless like the loaves and

the fishes.

I can do all these things, Lord, only through You. I just need

your blessing, then it’s easy to do.

I do this only to honor the birth of the One, That was sent to

redeem us, Your most Holy Son.

So to all of my friends, lest Your glory I rob, Please, Lord,

remind them who gave me this job.”

THIS WEEK'S POINT DC Archdiocese sues mayor over

„unfair‟ COVID restrictions on worship December 14, 2020 - The D.C. mayor's office is only a half-mile from the National Archives. If Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, D.C., ever made that trek, she might have a better grasp on the U.S. Con-stitution. It's right there for everyone to read, including the First Amendment, which warns leaders like her against infringing on the free exercise of religion - something her COVID rules have done to every believer in the nation's capital. Now, one of the holiest days of the year approaching, Catholic leaders are done with the unfair treat-ment. And they're taking her to court to prove it. The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, like a lot of churches, watched what the Supreme Court did in New York City, blowing away Governor Andrew Cuomo's rules and opening the doors to in-person services. Now, with Christmas around the corner, they think it's time that D.C. did the same. In a lawsuit against Mayor Bowser, the diocese points out that they've "demonstrated that people can worship God in a safe, respon-sible, and cooperative way. This has led to an exemplary safety rec-ord: thousands of Masses, with zero known COVID outbreaks linked to the Mass. Yet as Christmas fast approaches, the District has im-posed arbitrary 50-person caps on Mass attendance - even for masked, socially-distant services, and even when those services are held in churches that can in normal times host over a thousand peo-ple." The 50-person cap is ridiculous, the diocese argues, when you consider that "public libraries, laundromats, retail stores, restaurants, tattoo parlors, nail salons, fitness centers, and many other establish-ments" are only limited based on their capacity. That's a slap in the face of local churches, they argue, especially when there are more than 650,000 D.C.-area Catholics who "at the end of this most difficult year now face the chilling prospect of being told that there is no room for them at the church this Christmas." "We just think we should not be treated any differently and certain-ly not unfairly in comparison to other public places for attendance,” Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Wilton Gregory insisted. ENTRANCE HYMN - Joy to the World! 1) Joy to the world! The Lord is come, let earth receive her King! Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room, and heav'n and nature sing, and heav'n and nature sing, and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing! 2) Joy to the world! The Savior reigns! Let us our songs employ! While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains re-peat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, re-peat the sounding joy! 3) He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love, and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His love!

FIRST READING - Genesis 15:1-6,21:1-3 A reading from the Book of Genesis The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your re-ward very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir.” Then the word of the Lord came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. The Lord took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM - Psalm 105:1-6,8-9 REFRAIN: The Lord remembers his covenant forever. 1) Give thanks to the Lord, invoke his name; make known among the nations his deeds. Sing to him, sing his praise, proclaim all his wondrous deeds. REFRAIN: The Lord remembers his covenant forever. 2) Glory in his holy name; rejoice, O hearts that seek the Lord! Look to the Lord in his strength; constantly seek his face. REFRAIN: The Lord remembers his covenant forever. 3) You descendants of Abraham, his servants, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones! He, the Lord, is our God; throughout the earth his judgments prevail.

REFRAIN: The Lord remembers his covenant forever. 4) He remembers forever his covenant which he made binding for a thousand generations which he entered into with Abraham and by his oath to Isaac. REFRAIN: The Lord remembers his covenant forever.

SECOND READING - Hebrews 11:8,11-12,17-19 A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews Brothers and sisters: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age - and Sarah herself was sterile - for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descend-ants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as count-less as the sands on the seashore. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name.” He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL - Luke 2:22-40 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. When the days were completed for their purifica-tion according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacri-fice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in ac-cordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Sime-on. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child‟s Father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be con-tradicted - and you yourself a sword will pierce - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her mar-riage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God

and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the re-demption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the pre-scriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our sal-vation He came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. I be-lieve in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
