This Is Our Faith

Deacon’s Desk

WHAT IS THE "DEPOSIT OF FAITH"?

THE PHRASE was first used as a technical term at the Council of Trent (1545-63) and implied the full treasure of the church’s teachings. The deposit includes the canon of scripture, the sacraments, and all teachings since apostolic times. It was understood that revelation ended with the generation of the apostles: Therefore the deposit of faith is closed to further additions or subtractions. What church tradition has done since that era is to “reap the interest,” so to speak, on that original deposit with any ensuing teaching. Of course it’s also true that the church’s treasure is not a thing but a person: Jesus Christ himself, “a living resource” of truth and salvation, as theologian Nancy Dallavalle puts it. So while the deposit of faith is “unchanging” since the apostles, it’s nevertheless quite alive. Vatican II (1962-1965) revived the term under new conditions. This council’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation saw the sacred commission of a deposit of faith as entrusted to the whole church and not as the sole possession of its magisterium or teaching authority. The fresh articulation of church doctrine that sprang from the council was a surprising indication of how much the Christian community could hear as new from such an ancient vault of treasure. Next week’s scripture insights: Readings for Sunday, July 14, 2019 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Dt 30:10–14 Ps 69:14, 17, 30–31, 33–34, 36, 37 or Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11 Col 1:15–20 Lk 10:25–37

We are to love God and our neighbor with all the strength of our being, as the scholar of the Law answers Jesus in this week’s Gospel.

This command is nothing remote or mysterious—it's already written in our hearts, in the book of sacred Scripture. “You have only to carry it out,” Moses says in this week’s First Reading.

Jesus tells His interrogator the same thing: “Do this and you will live.”

The scholar, however, wants to know where he can draw the line. That's the motive behind his question: “Who is my neighbor?”

In his compassion, the Samaritan in Jesus' parable reveals the boundless mercy of God – who came down to us when we were fallen in sin, close to dead, unable to pick ourselves up.

Jesus is “the image of the invisible God,” this week’s Epistle tells us. In Him, the love of God has come very near to us. By the “blood of His Cross” – by bearing His neighbors' sufferings in His own body, being himself stripped and beaten and left for dead—He saved us from bonds of sin, reconciled us to God and to one another.

Like the Samaritan, He pays the price for us, heals the wounds of sin, pours out on us the oil and wine of the sacraments, entrusts us to the care of His Church, until He comes back for us.

Because His love has known no limits, ours cannot either. We are to love as we have been loved, to do for others what He has done for us – joining all things together in His Body, the Church.

We are to love like the singer of this week’s Psalm—like those whose prayers have been answered, like those whose lives has been saved, who have known the time of His favor, have seen God in His great mercy turn toward us.

This is the love that leads to eternal life, the love Jesus commands today of the scholar, and of each of us—”Go and do likewise.”

Thoughts to Consider this week WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?

Fred Rogers, who would later famously have his own “Neighborhood,” earned his first degree in music composition. He went to work in television and found his way into children’s programming as a puppeteer, composer, and organist. He studied to become a Presbyterian minister and to earn a degree in child development in his off hours. After his ordination, his church agreed he should continue to be the best possible grownup neighbor to children who could use one. Neighbors aren’t simply the folks next door. They’re primarily the people who need us most.

CHECK YOUR TRUST FUND

Spontaneity and trust are hard to cultivate and maintain, and it gets harder as responsibilities grow. We have become accustomed to planning and more planning. Not wanting to be caught off-guard, we struggle to trust the moment. In the midst of planning a vacation, for example, you might become bogged down in detail—and forget that the purpose of the trip was to relax! Imagine your potential if you could only trust more. Tonight at dinner say a spontaneous prayer, trusting that God will give you the words.

Feed and Be Fed 100

SUMMER HELPER OPPORTUNITY! During the winter months, student volunteers from Gwynedd Mercy University visit St. Rose weekly to count and sort the Feed and Be Fed food donations. During their summer break, we are seeking a high school or college student to help for about 45 minutes on Mondays (any time between 9 am-3:30 pm) to sort and count the food.
