TThis Is Our Faith

 Deacon’s Desk

LIVE THE WHOLE HOLY WEEK WHOLLY

• We’re not just celebrating another Sunday and returning to work on Monday.

• The minimum is Palm Sunday, then Easter Sunday, but this week is the most liturgically packed time of the year, especially starting on Holy Thursday.

• Consider attending at least one liturgy beyond the ones that are obligatory: why not the Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, or the Easter Vigil instead of Mass during the day on Easter Sunday?

• You can live each day and moment of Holy Week amidst your day to day chores and occupations even if you can’t attend additional liturgies.

• Consider Our Lord’s last few days in Jerusalem or Judas going out to betray him (Monday through Thursday morning)

• Consider the institution of the Priesthood and the Eucharist, and Jesus’ commandment to love (Thursday evening).

• Consider Gethsemane and his capture (late Thursday evening).

• Stand at his side when he is facing Pilate, or at the foot of his Cross at Calvary (Friday), sit with him in the tomb, or go to wherever Mary or one of the disciples (late Friday through Saturday) is suffering in silence and solitude and speak with them.

• Whether you attend the liturgies or take time out throughout the week, spend it with Our Lord.

Next week’s scripture insights: Readings for Sunday, April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord: Is 50:4-7Ps 22:8-9, 17-20, 23-24 Phil 2:6-11 Lk 22:14-23:56 What is written about Me is coming to fulfillment,” Jesus says in today's Gospel (see Luke 22:37). Indeed, we have reached the climax of the liturgical year, the highest peak of salvation history, when all that has been anticipated and promised is to be fulfilled.

By the close of today's long Gospel, the work of our redemption will have been accomplished, the new covenant will be written in the blood of His broken body hanging on the cross at the place called the Skull.

In His Passion, Jesus is “counted among the wicked,” as Isaiah had foretold (see Isaiah 53:12). He is revealed definitively as the Suffering Servant the prophet announced, the long-awaited Messiah whose words of obedience and faith ring out in today's First Reading and Psalm.

The taunts and torments we hear in these two readings punctuate the Gospel as Jesus is beaten and mocked (see Luke 22:63-65; 23:10-11,16), as His hands and feet are pierced (see Luke 23:33), as enemies gamble for His clothes ( see Luke 23:34), and as three times they dare Him to prove His divinity by saving Himself from suffering (see Luke 23:35,37,39)

He remains faithful to God's will to the end, does not turn back in His trial. He gives Himself freely to His torturers, confident that, as He speaks in today's First Reading: “The Lord God is My help…I shall not be put to shame.”

Destined to sin and death as children of Adam's disobedience, we have been set free for holiness and life by Christ's perfect obedience to the Father's will (see Romans 5:12-14,17-19; Ephesians 2:2; 5:6).

This is why God greatly exalted Him. This is why we have salvation in His Name. Following His example of humble obedience in the trials and crosses of our lives, we know we will never be forsaken, that one day we too will be with Him in Paradise (see Luke 23:42). Seeing and Believing.

Thoughts to Consider this week~

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD HATS OFF TO JESUS’ MESSAGE

Imagine a baseball-cap seller in the first century. Further imagine the catchy phrases on the brim of his wares: “The last will be first.” “Let me wash your feet.” “Love your enemies.” “Bless those who hurt you.” “Be like the children.” “Feed my sheep.” “Take up your cross.” “The humble will be exalted.” “Blessed are the meek.” Who’s going to buy this misguided fellow’s hats? The rest of us want to boast, not bow. This guy doesn’t get it. He needs to get into another line of work. Would you wear a hat that says: “I come to serve”?

DON’T FAIL TO FIND GOD One of the lessons of Holy Week is that God draws grace and goodness out of any situation—even one that to us looks like a complete failure. God uses all of what is—every person’s strength and weakness, every experience, encounter, accident, war or act of kindness, natural beauty or disaster—to make visible God’s love and sustaining presence in the world. The psalmist put it this way: “For darkness is as light” to God. The message of Holy Week is one for the entire year. Make a habit of looking for the ways God redeems our “failures.” See how grace abounds.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 28, 2019

Solemnity Celebration 3:00-4:00 pm

What is Divine Mercy? The message of the Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us - all of us. And, He wants us to recognize His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow

through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of St. Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun, who in obedience to her spiritual director wrote a diary of approximately 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Divine Mercy Sunday is a Roman Catholic solemnity celebrated on the Sunday after Easter.
