PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD PASSION

The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the proclama on of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupa on.

They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trus ng that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Looking Through Stained Glass

The Chris an High Holy Days Beginning this weekend, we celebrate the holiest days of our year, Holy Week. While they are not coincident with the Jewish High Holy Days, our Holy Week reflects one similar theme as these days for our Jewish brethren – a me of new beginnings. Our days do not reflect the beginning of a new year, but the beginning of a new life through Christ’s salvific Passion, Death and Resurrec on.

We begin our Holy Week this weekend with Palm Sunday. On this day, we celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. However, already we have an eye toward the endgame, which is His Crucifixion. This Mass is the only Mass that includes two Gospels: one from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, which we read at the beginning of Mass as we re-enact this episode with our own palm waving; and one that retells Jesus’ Passion, which comes from Mark’s Gospel this year.

The next three days of Holy Week are the last three days of Lent and serve as prepara on for the three holiest days of the year, the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Par cipa ng in the liturgies of the Triduum helps to prepare our hearts for the new beginning and new life in Christ that comes with Easter.

Holy Thursday tradi onally has two liturgies: The Chrism Mass and The Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Many dioceses, including our own, transfer the Chrism Mass to a day earlier in Holy Week for pastoral reasons. In the Diocese of Palm Beach, the Chrism Mass is held on Holy Tuesday. The highlight and main purpose of the Chrism Mass is the Bishop blessing the Holy Oils for use throughout the year, including the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism (hence the name of the Mass). These oils will be used by the clergy of the Diocese to celebrate the Sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on, Anoin ng of the Sick and Ordina on. In this Mass, we see the renewal of our Sacramental life, which is part of our life in Christ.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper places special emphasis on another Sacrament – the Eucharist. Jesus gave us this Sacrament to remind us of His enduring love for us through this special gi of Himself. A special moment is also included when the priest washes the feet of several representa ves of the parish, re-enac ng the model of service that Jesus displayed when He washed the feet of His Apostles, another outward sign of his great love. [JN 13:15]

The liturgy of Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion completes the gi of Jesus that he began at the Last Supper. On Thursday, he gave Himself – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity – to us in the Eucharist. On Friday, he gave his life for us on the Cross to pay the debt of our sins. We are washed clean by the Blood of Jesus. We are saved by his free gi of Himself. We are freed by His subjec on to punishment. We are made whole by his being broken.

The culmina on of the Triduum comes in the Mass of the Lord’s Resurrec on on Holy Saturday evening – the Easter Vigil. While many people forego this Mass because it is longer than most, it is one of the most beau ful celebra ons of our en re year. It is packed with great meaning and celebra on. The Mass begins with the blessing of new fire and water, symbols of Christ bringing us new life. It moves through a wonderful retelling of the story of salva on with several readings. While this Mass is filled with many highlights, one of the more emo onal and joyous moments is the celebra on of the Sacraments of Ini a on (Bap sm, Confirma on and Eucharist) for our RCIA Candidates and Catechumen. With the celebra on of this Mass, Holy Week and the Triduum end and the renewal of Easter begins!

If at all possible, please plan to take advantage of our various liturgies for Holy Week, so that you may enter more fully into the beauty and wonder of our faith as found in these Chris an High Holy Days! [You will find our Holy Week Schedule in this bulle n.]

March 23, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Our Church is not limited only to our parish, our diocese or even our na on. We are a worldwide family of faith that embraces diverse cultures, races and na ons. Next week as we gather on the Passion of the Lord, we will par cipate in the special Good Friday Collec on. In doing so, we answer Pope Francis’ call to support Chris ans in the Holy Land. The Church in the Holy Land represents in a real way our elder brothers and sisters in the faith, for they were the first to embrace Christ and His Gospel. The Pon fical Good Friday Collec on is taken up in every Catholic Church around the world. It sustains Chris anity in the Holy Land. With your help the Church ministers in parish communi es, provides forma on and educa on, builds homes and feeds the hungry. In addi on, the sacred shrines in the Holy Land are maintained so pilgrims can walk in the footsteps of Jesus. The Chris ans of the Holy Land have endured much hardship and uncertainty in recent history. Civil wars and unrest have made life, combined with the refugee and humanitarian cri-sis, precarious in the land we call holy. Your par cipa on in the Good Friday collec on is a symbolic way of walking the

Way of the Cross that many of our elder brothers and sisters in the Holy Land daily struggle to complete. During this holy season of Lent, may God fill you with every joy, strength and gi of grace and may our Blessed Mother always intercede for you. With gra tude for your con nued generosity and every prayerful wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

Merciful Father, You desire the welfare of all your children. Stretch out Your protec ng arm over our men and women in the service. Shield them from

every danger to body, mind and soul. Comfort them in loneliness, sustain them in hardship, give them

the courage they need to fulfill their duty and so do Your will in all things. Bestow on our leaders and the

leaders of the world the wisdom and prudence which will bring peace and jus ce to all.

This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord. Amen. Mary, help of Chris ans, pray for us.
