Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor A man was bemoaning conventional wisdom’s defini-tion of an expert as “someone who lives 50 miles away and carries a briefcase.” Why spend all that money flying in “experts” when there are experts in our midst? “What is it,” he often asks, “that keeps us from seeing the wis-dom in those around us.” Perhaps Jesus wonders the same thing in today’s Gos-pel. What keeps those in Jesus’ hometown from recogniz-ing his wisdom? Must a prophet be someone who lives 50 miles away and a carries a Torah? Sounds silly, but then again, maybe not. Take a mo-ment to consider what has occurred in Mark’s Gospel prior to today’s passage. Mark begins with Jesus’ bap-tism, his subsequent 40 days in the desert, and the begin-ning of his ministry on the road. Jesus begins to travel to many locations and people are astonished at his teachings. Crowds are large. The crowds are so great that when a woman touches his cloak, he cannot even identify who, among the many, has touched him. From one shore of the sea to the next, people came to believe because of what they heard, because of what they saw. In today’s Gospel, Jesus returns home and attends the synagogue of his childhood. In those days, synagogue officials could invite any Jewish man to speak. We can assume, then, that at least one person thought Jesus had something of value to say that day as Mark tells us that Jesus “began to teach.” And when they heard him, the people were, indeed, astonished. They recognized Jesus’ wisdom: “What kind of wisdom has been given to him?” They recognized Jesus’ power: “What mighty deeds have been wrought by his hands?” But then something hap-pened. Someone raised an issue that led to a foregone conclusion. “Wait a minute.” We can almost hear them thinking, “we know this guy. We grew up with him. He is the son of Mary, he’s Jesus, for pity sake!” What happened, we can wonder, in the midst of Jesus’ family, friend and neighbors that took them from listening to what Jesus had to say with an open mind and an open heart, to close-mindedly judging him by what they thought they knew about him? Perhaps more importantly, what happens in us that causes our minds and hearts to shut down? What keeps us from listening with an open mind and an open heart to the wisdom someone we know might has to share? God was in their midst. And they simply could not see. At times, what keeps us from seeing the risen Christ? What blind spots keep us, like they kept the family and friends of Jesus, from recognizing the word of God in our midst? Do we, too, think to ourselves, “wait a minute, I know that person! He is this, she is that, they can’t know more than me! I am better than them! Or are we? Maybe we truly do not know as much in certain areas and we just might miss out. Imagine our world if we were more open to listening than were those in Jesus’ hometown. What might the world look like if we viewed others as having something of value to teach us? Perhaps a place to start is by simply, though perhaps not easily, recognizing Emmanuel, God with us, in others around us. I hope and pray that you will all continue to have a good and restful summer. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Go beyond just saying “no” to teach children about polite ex-ceptions Rules about politeness seem to be in contradiction to the rules we teach children about avoiding predators and responding to behaviors that make them uncomfortable. It’s important to ex-pand on the idea of saying “no” when someone asks them to cross a boundary. Explain that there are situations where being rude is acceptable, if that’s what it takes, and help them under-stand that being polite has its limits. In today’s Gospel the people ask: “How is it such miraculous deeds are accomplished by his hands?” Because of your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul many “miraculous deeds” are accomplished for the poor. This week put a gift in the parish poor box, knowing that through your kindness someone who is suffering will be touched by God in a miraculous way.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an inter-national Catholic ministry which works with the poor, the homeless, and the disenfranchised people of its communi-ty. Here at St. Paschal Baylon our St. Vincent de Paul keeps a pantry open from 10 am to 12 pm Monday through Friday. Although we are mainly a food pantry, we also assist with bills for utilities, rent or gas. Our cli-ents do not have to belong to the Parish but they must be from the Conejo Valley. We work with other Societies of SVDP to maximize our assistance.

We rely on our parishioners for food through donations through Project Response, drop-offs at the back of the church and other ministries who do collections during the year.

Pope Francis tells us to live our Faith with the Corporal Works of Mercy. Through the ministry of SVDP we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the needy, and help with housing. Come join us! The rewards are great! We are in need of volunteers to assist us in our works of mercy. Time commitment is one shift at the pantry every other week and if possible bi-monthly meet-ings. Please call Cathy Hines (805-341-3026) or Sandy Elias (805-405-2586) if you have any questions.

OBSTACLES

The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “Hard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthi-ans 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 8, 2018 I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses,

in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. — 2 Corinthians 12:9

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm — Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading — I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel — The people said: “Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?” (Mark 6:1-6). Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crime-an War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev.
