April 30, 2017 Third Sunday of Easter

Saint of the Week St. Athanasius

Athanasius was born at Alexandria around 295. Elected bishop of that city in 328, he was a strenuous supporter of Catholicism against Arianism, which had been

condemned by the Council of Nicea (325) but remained the cause of doubt and division in the Eastern Church. Athanasius was stalwart in his defense of Christian orthodoxy against the Arian heresy and thus made himself the target of attacks by heretics. He was sent into exile and was able to return only under the emperor Valens. He died in 373.

Athanasius appears more often in Eastern art than Western and is depicted in episcopal vestments, holding a book.

The name Athanasius is from the Greek and means “immortal.”

Prayer Intention of the Week:

That media professionals may seek

to serve the truth and to meet

the needs of those to whom

they communicate

www.olpmarshfield.com

Please pray for the Church in our Diocese

Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere.

With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord.

This week we pray especially for:

Philip Grygleski of St. Bronislava Parish in Plover, WI

College II St. John Vianney Seminary

2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish · Marshfield

I love the mass readings during the Easter season. They are full of the wonder and the power and the joy of the resurrection and the blessing and guidance of the Holy Spirit in the early church. The Acts of the Apostles tells us how people joined the community of believers in massive numbers and how the apostles were fearless as they proclaimed the resurrection in the midst of opposition by the religious leaders. Truly believing in the resurrection entirely changes a person’s perspective on life and what is important and where our hope really lies.

As we hear so often how the youth of the church are important as our future, our Parish Council has been talking about how our young people can take a role in our parish Rebuilt program, making our Sunday Mass experience as heavenly and beautiful and inspiring as it should be, and making our parish a welcoming family that is known for kindness to strangers and a desire to know the people nearby in the pews. We are reminded of our love for the young people of the church as Columbus High School students join us at the 5:30 Mass this weekend before their Prom. Last Friday evening was the annual Galleon fundraiser for Columbus Catholic Schools, and was full of happiness and generosity and fervent support for the purpose and mission of Catholic education. Columbus High School, I am very happy to say, has successfully raised enough financial support for the addition of a needed and impressive new science lab at the south end of the High School. I am sincerely grateful to all of the people, especially at Our Lady of Peace, who made financial gifts to bring about this expansion of our Catholic mission. God bless you!! Construction will take place over the summer and it will be exciting to watch. These really are good days to be a Catholic in Marshfield. God bless you and all those you love during this Easter season.

Yours, Father Berns

From Our Pastor

Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting before the Lord our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at 715-384-9414. He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date.

Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:30-5:15pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent.

First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP’s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation.

RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at 715-384-3044. Classes begin each Fall.

Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding.

Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at 715-384-9414. A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year.

New Parishioners - To join our community, please register at the Parish Office, the church welcome desk or call 715-384-9414 Ext. 2.

Whenever the Church celebrates the Eucharist, the faithful can in some

way relive the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus:

“their eyes were opened and they recognized him.”

IN LOVING MEMORY

Donations for Easter Flowers were received in memory of these

departed loved ones:

My name is Corinne Voss and I am a sophomore at Columbus High School. I was recently chosen to attend the Wisconsin Leadership Seminar this June at UW-Whitewater. Students chosen are high school Sophomores

who are responsible citizens in their school and community. The 3-day leadership seminar encourages leadership development through emphasis on personal responsibility, volunteerism, increased awareness of social issues, and open-minded analysis of all sides of an issue when making decisions.

I am very honored to have been chosen to represent Columbus at the Wisconsin Leadership Seminar and I look forward to sharing what I learn with my classmates.
