! Last Sunday Pope Francis canonized the newest saint in our church, Mother Teresa. For many of us her name brings up the image of a small Indian nun dressed in a white and blue sari. Mother Teresa is known internationally for her ministry to the sickest of the sick, winning the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize as well as many other honors for her acts of charity.!!

Born on August 26, 1910 in Macedonia, she was inspired at the age of 15 to work in India. At 18 she left home, became a Sister of Loreto and found herself teaching in a fashionable girl’s college. She soon be-came depressed on seeing so many destitute and dying people on the city streets, many lying prey to rats and other vermin.!!

In 1946 she received a “call within a call” to leave her teaching position and help the poor by living among them. Four years later she founded the Mis-sionaries of Charity, a community of women and men dedicated to care for the poorest of poor. Eventually this grew into an international community following her example. Millions of poor people have been com-passionately cared for and have not died alone.!!

Mother Teresa of Kolkata died in September, 1997

and was beatified in 2003, just six years after her

death. As we honor her with sainthood, may her chal-

lenge continue: to never forget the poorest of the poor!!

Assim seja!!!!

We’re looking forward to a great time of singing worship and fellowship!!

Tim Wirth, Director of Music!

!

Thank you!

We are very grateful for the generous financial support that we receive on a weekly basis from the St. Michael Parishioners. The poor box donations allows us to help the less fortunate in our community.!

Members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society

Today’s readings reflect on the unconditional and astonish-ing mercy of God. The conversation between God and Mo-ses is especially engaging. Who would blame God for be-ing angry and disappointed with the Israelites for their in-credible acts of brazen infidelity. Moses calls on God to remember the covenant, and in response to the supplication of Moses, God relents.!

The mercy that Paul experiences is personal. He readily confesses that his life as a “blasphemer and persecutor” is deserving of punishment, but he grace of God “has been abundant” and he has been “mercifully treated” by the Lord. Paul believes that the love and patients of Christ that he has received were intended to give encouragement to others, that they, too, will receive mercy.!

The fifteenth chapter of Luke’s Gospel account is the fa-miliar collection of the three parables of forgiveness. The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the memorable story of the prodigal son are rich in meaning. Each reveals something about the nature of God, and the circumstances in the stores shape the lesson For example, we know that neither the sheep nor the coin was responsible for getting lost. The joy of the shepherd and woman is without condi-tion and certainly without any blame being assigned to the sheep or the coin. But the younger son makes a deliberate and selfish choice. This makes it all the more remarkable that even though the boy wasted his inheritance, his father waits for him and celebrates his return. The response of the older brother is different, and gives us a chance to re-flect on times we may have felt resentment toward sinners who receive mercy. The closing lines of the parable should give all of us the courage to seek the loving mercy of the Father, no matter how lost we might feel in our spiritual journey. The embrace of the Father is never withheld.!

THANK YOU!

We would like to thank the following contributors for their generosity in supporting our parish picnic this year:!

Preventing Polypharmacy !!

Polypharmacy refers to the effects of taking multiple medications concurrently to manage coexisting health problems. Too often polypharmacy becomes problematic, such as when patients are prescribed too many medications by multiple healthcare providers working independently of each other. Drug interactions can occur if no single healthcare provider knows the patient’s complete medication picture. Among older adults, polypharmacy is a common problem. The drugs include both prescription and (OTC) overthecounter preparations, such as vitamin and mineral supplements and herbal products. The most commonly used drugsacetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin), and aspirinare available OTC and contribute significantly to adverse drug reactions.!!

Older persons react differently to medications than younger persons. Liver metabolism, drug elimination and drug storage are all altered in the older adult. An adverse reaction to one drug may go unrecognized or misinterpreted, causing the healthcare provider to inappropriately subscribe a second drug to treat the signs and symptoms. Dietary and herbal preparations can also interact with prescribed medications and lead to serious adverse effects. !!

Here are some ways you can reduce the risk of polypharmacy. !

Keep an accurate list of ALL MEDICATIONS, its name, dosage, frequency and reason for taking the drug.!

Keep a complete list of ALL medical providers and their contact information.!

Post the name and telephone number of your pharmacy.!

Know each medication, the reason for taking it, and its potential adverse effects and interactions. !

Use only one pharmacy to obtain medications. This adds another level of review to help ensure appropriate dosage and reduce the risk of adverse drug effects and interactions. !

!

In conclusion KEEP IT SIMPLE. As a general rule health care providers should minimize the number of medications prescribed for older adults and to keep the dosing schedule as simple as possible. Feel free to talk to your primary care physician, to his/her nurse or to your pharmacist if you have any concerns. Also feel free to email me or call me if you have any questions. Mary Ellen Bartlett, [email protected] or at 5087790020.!

Sunday Throughout

!

Mission for the Week!!

When I hurt others, I will say, "I am sorry. Will you forgive me?"!

!

Something to Draw !!

Draw yourself and your family finding your lost toy in the dog house.!

Sharing the Gospel!

When you cannot find your favorite toy, you look for it. You look under your bed, in the toy box, and out in your back yard. Your whole family helps you look for it. They are happy when you find it. When you sin, you are lost. God looks for you eve-rywhere. When you tell him you are sorry for your sins, God

says, "I forgive you," and he gives you a big hug.!

PrayerLord, thank you for forgiving me when I do wrong.!
