FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 07, 2017

Today’s Gospel Reflection

First Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33 * Psalm: Ps Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 * Second Reading: 1 Pt 1:17-21 * Gospel: Lk 24:13-35

THE CALL OF THE GOOD

SHEPHERD

The Twenty-third Psalm, to-day’s responsorial psalm, is argua-bly the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that,

free from sin, we might live for righteousness.”

— 1 Peter 2:24a

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10).

HEAVEN

The goal of religion is not to get us into heaven—but

to get heaven into us. —Anonymous

COUNTING SHEEP

Every person can tell how many goats or sheep one

possesses, but not how many friends. —Cicero

Shepherd and stop counting sheep.” - Anonymous

Dear Parishioners and friends,

Month of Mary! The month of May is the month dedicated to Our

Blessed Lady — to Mary, the Mother of God. It is the occasion for a mov-

ing tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world (pay)

to the Queen of Heaven.

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our

Blessed Mother to three shepherd children in Fatima. In commemoration

of this year’s Centennial Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima, six (6) statues

were blessed by Pope Francis on January 11, 2017 as “The International Centennial Pilgrim

Image of Our Lady of Fatima” as requested by two global apostolates—the Alliance of the

Holy Family International and the Human Life International-Austria. These statues are to travel

to the six continents to promote Our Blessed Mother’s message of Prayer and Reparation for

world peace and to preserve the sanctity of family life.

One of these International Centennial Pilgrim Image will be coming to St. Michael

Church. Let us join hands in welcoming Our Blessed Mother on May 11 (Thursday), at

2:00 p.m.

Let us turn to Mary, the Mother of God and our Mother, in all our needs… To Jesus

through Mary!

Next Sunday is MOTHER’S DAY. Remember your mother and grandmother (living or

deceased). Include them in our Novena of Masses which will start on May 14, 2017 through

May 22, 2017. You may find envelopes for your intentions in the pews or at the parish office.

Our 7th ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE and AUCTION will be held on May 20, 2017

(Saturday) at 6:00 pm. This year we are giving away two new 2017 Honda Fit which will be

drawn separately. There are two sets of raffle tickets being sold at $10 per ticket or six tickets

for $50. If you buy two sets of tickets you will have a chance to win both cars. Tickets are sold

in the courtyard after all Masses this weekend.

Remember: the more tickets you buy, the more chances you have of winning.

“Do not appear before the Lord empty-handed, for all that you offer is in fulfillment of the precepts…. With a generous spirit pay homage to the Lord, and do not spare your freewill gifts.

With each contribution show a cheerful countenance, and pay your tithes in a spirit of joy. Give to the Most High as He has given to you, generously, according to your means.

For He is a God who always repays and will give back to you sevenfold.” - Sirach 35:6,10-13

Join us in praying the Rosary to promote a Culture of Life every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in the Church. The Music Ministers will lead us in the Rosary during the month of May.

“It is God who gives life. Let us respect and love human life, especially vulnerable life in a mother’s womb.”

- Pope Francis

“The promotion of the culture of life should be the highest priority in our societies… If the right to life is not defended decisively as a condition for all other rights of the person, all other references to human rights remain deceitful and illusory.“ - St. Pope John Paul II

Human Life is sacred—all men must recognize that fact.

From its very inception it reveals the creating hand of God.” - St. Pope John XXIII

“Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. There may be legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not…

with regard to abortion and euthanasia.” - Pope Benedict XVI

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a promi-nent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacrifice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Com-munion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.” Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. STEWARDSHIP A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

Fourth Sunday of Easter Weekend of May 6/7, 2017

Saint Peter plays a prominent leadership role in the first two readings, urging his listeners to be baptized and accept the gift of the Holy Spirit; and encouraging them to follow in the foot-steps of Christ. We have just renewed our baptismal promises at Easter and the Holy Spirit dwells in us in a special way. Are we good stewards of those baptismal vows? Have we renewed our commitment to follow in Jesus’ footsteps? Have we opened our hearts to discern the will of God in our lives? Take some time to reflect on the importance of our baptismal renewal and our lives as disciples of the Lord. - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE DREAM!

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Loving and Generous God, it is You who call us by name and ask us to follow You. Help us to grow in the Love and Service of our Church as we experience it today.

Give us the energy and courage of Your Spirit to shape its future. Grant us faith-filled leaders who will embrace Christ's Mission

of love and justice. Bless the Church of St. Michael (San Diego) by raising up dedicated and generous leaders from our families

and friends who will serve Your people as Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Deacons and Lay Ministers. Inspire us to know You

better and open our hearts to hear Your call. We ask this through our Lord.

CHRISTIAN STEWARDS:

PEOPLE OF THE RESURRECTION

For those immersed in the secular world, Easter is long over. The pastel bunnies, the chocolate eggs, the color-splashed jelly beans which appeared in the marketplace so temptingly just as Christians were beginning the fasting of Lent, have long been swept from the store shelves to be replaced in anticipation of the next marketable holiday. For the Christian steward, how back-ward this all seems. Yes, we believe that the Paschal mystery and the life-changing events of Easter are not over. They are not an end but a triumphal beginning, and they have altered us in a quite radical way. The mystery and miracle of Easter challenge us to live as differ-ent people, as people of the Resurrection. What does this mean? For those new Catholics who participated in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), a period of mystagogy helps to under-stand this mystery. Indeed, this ancient Greek word actually means “to lead through the mysteries.” During mystagogia, many parishes introduce their new members to service in a quite practi-cal way. Here are the ministries of the parish; here are the chari-ties we support; here are the needs of our community and our congregation. How do you choose to live out your faith in the Resurrection in a quite tangible and real way? How do your gifts fit into our needs? Essentially, however, this is a question that the Easter season calls forth in all Christian stewards not just our newest members. We have lived through Lent and the Paschal mysteries, all the while trying to deepen a relationship with the person of Christ. It’s as simple, yet as amazing and complex as that. The deeper the relationship grows, the more we become rooted in it, the more this relationship with Christ comes to dominate our lives. We no longer compartmentalize Jesus, we hold him at our center. And the mysteries lead us to the fundamental question at the heart of all Christian stewardship, the question that Easter compels us to ask: How do I steward my resources – my time, my money, my abilities and gifts, my very life – so that they are in service to the Kingdom of God? It’s not a part-time question. It’s not a seasonal question that’s swept off the shelf periodically. It’s the basic ques-tion which the Easter season demands of us: Jesus, how do you want me to serve you? - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews, May 2017

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER for MAY

Loving Father, During this Easter season, we rejoice in your son, who has renewed us in freedom and joy through the mystery of his resurrection. We have been called to proclaim his Gospel; not because we are good enough, holy enough, or talented enough; but because you wanted us to have this gift and this responsibility. Give us the courage to be faithful to this call; help us make every day of our lives an experience of Easter. And keep us ever mindful of our charge: to go in peace to love and serve the Lord; that as stewards of your world we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to transform it, bring it justice and peace, and offer it, in gratitude, back to you. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Refleciones del Evangelio

EL LLAMADO DEL BUEN

PASTOR

Heavenly Father, we ask for Your divine guidance as we prayerfully move toward the realization of our new parish center.

Show us the way to meet the needs of our growing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sacrifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor.

Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish.

Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice.

This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.
