The Catholic Standard online-The Catholic Standard is now printing the newspaper monthly during the pandemic. However, they have been actively continuing coverage with news of local parishes, schools and people. You can stay connected at cathstan.org. News items are posted daily so check back often to keep updated.

St. Mary’s Church Restrooms-We have re-opened the restrooms in the Main Church. We are following the Montgomery County law in using CDC and EPA approved disinfectants to clean the restrooms between each religious service. We still recommend parishioners to follow public health recommendations of using the bathroom in your home before coming to Mass and to only use public bathrooms in case of emergency.

U.S. Bishops on the COVID-19 Vaccine On December 14, 2020, the USCCB issued a statement addressing the moral concerns raised by the fact that three COVID-19 vaccines [Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZenica] have some connection to cell lines that originated with tissue taken from abortions. All three vaccines are being distributed across the world. The Holy See, through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Academy for Life, has offered guidance on the question of whether it is morally acceptable to receive a vaccine that has been created with the use of morally compromised cell lines. The Church emphasizes the positive moral obligation to do good and in so doing to distance oneself as much as possible from the immoral act of another party such as abortion in order to avoid cooperation with someone else’s evil actions and to avoid giving scandal, which could happen if one’s own actions were perceived by other people to ignore or to minimize the evil of the action. Our love of neighbor should lead us to avoid giving scandal, but we cannot omit fulfilling serious obligations such as the prevention of deadly infection and the spread of contagion among those who are vulnerable just to avoid the appearance of scandal. While neither the Pfizer nor Moderna vaccine is completely free from any connection to morally compromised cell lines, the connection is very remote from the initial evil of the abortion. Neither used morally compromised cell lines in the design, development, or production of their vaccines. The U.S. Bishops concluded: “In view of the gravity of the current pandemic and the lack of availability of alternative vaccines, the reasons to accept the new COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are sufficiently serious to justify their use, despite their remote connection to morally compromised cell lines. “Receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccines ought to be understood as an act of charity toward the other members of our community. In this way, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and part of our moral responsibility for the common good.” With regard to the AstraZeneca vaccine, the bishops found it to be “more morally compromised” because the HEK293 cell line was used in the design, development, and production stages of that vaccine. They consequently concluded that this vaccine “should be avoided” if there are alternatives available [i.e. Pfizer, Moderna]. “It may turn out, however, that one does not really have a choice of vaccine, at least, not without a lengthy delay in immunization that may have serious consequences for one’s health and the health of others … In such a case … it would be permissible to accept the AstraZeneca vaccine.” As Catholics, we “must be on guard so that the new COVID-19 vaccines do not desensitize us or weaken our determination to oppose the evil of abortion itself and the subsequent use of fetal cells in research.” NOTE: In next week’s Digital Bulletin, we will explore how we, with the help of the Church, can answer ethical questions about possible involvement in the wrongdoing of others or selecting the lesser of two bad choices through the Principle of Cooperation. It is this exercise that helps us to discern how to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

  • The St. Mary's 2021 Gala is just one month away! Our raffle has kicked off and our online auction is coming together, but there's lots to be done to make this Gala a success. We need everyone to pitch in and pull together to reach the finish line. How Can I Help? 1. Buy a raffle ticket. Better yet, buy 5! Encourage your friends and family to buy some as well. We could all use a windfall in 2021--why not start the year off with a bang and a $3,000 bonus! Use this link to buy your tickets. bidpal.net/smsgala2021 2. Donate to the auction using the Amazon Wish List. We've made it super easy to help out. Just click on the link and put a few items in your cart. They will ship directly to the school and your donations are tax-deductible. No fuss; no muss, but a huge help to the school. https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3GMH1V9BMNP3B?&sort=default 3. Donate a basket of goodies of your own creation. Wine and cheese baskets, craft beers, favorite whiskeys, rums, or other cocktails are always popular items, but they aren't available through Amazon. Ditto for unique products or services you can offer. (Are you a caterer? Do you have a beach condo? Can you perform landscaping magic? If so, we need you and your talents or treasures.) Items can be dropped off at the school during morning pickup. Just label them "Gala donation" and be sure to put them in a sturdy box if there are breakables inside. Please give St. Mary’s info on the donated item and to ensure you get credit for the donation, and may deduct it on your taxes. https://one.bidpal.net/smsgala2021/donate-item 4. Be a sponsor. There are lots of perks of being a sponsor, depending on the level of giving: advertising for your business, your company's link on the St. Mary's website, your name on the kids' Field Day t-shirts, awesome publicity and increased profits. The sky's the limit--won't you please contribute? You can use this link: bidpal.net/smsgala2021 5. Spread the word! Tell your friends and family, give a shout out on Facebook and other social media. Ask others to donate, sponsor, buy raffle tickets, and participate in the auction. Word of mouth is a powerful ally, so let's pass it on!! 6. Bid, bid, bid!!! The auction opens on February 3rd and is live through February 6th. Free shipping is available on some items (out-of-area only) so encourage your out-of-town network to join in the fun, too. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and the more people participate, the more successful it will be for our school.

The Gala is coming--please pitch in and pass it on, because WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!!!
