Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, 2016

Dear Friends,

This weekend we celebrate and pray the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time and we hear in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem through Samaria where he met ten lepers. As you look at the map, the main pilgrim route from Galilee to Jerusalem would have been to follow the Jordan Valley so as to avoid the region of Samaria. Yet, Jesus chose to travel through Samaria and it was there he encountered the 10 lepers. The lepers recognized Jesus and cried out for mercy and Jesus responds by sending them to the priests, in accordance with their Levitical practices. And along the way they are healed and only one seems to recognize

the healing. He returns with grati-tude and praise! And he was a Sa-maritan. And like the Old Testament story of Naaman, the foreigner, BOTH are filled with gratitude at the wonders of the Lord. Obvious-ly, the indictment is against his own people! How will we offer praise and thanks this week? Please be aware of the mid-

Fall EXTRAS for your generosity this month; the Loose Change for Life and the St. Vincent de Paul Blanket Sunday. BOTH are noble causes and NEED our prayers, our support and our financial gifts. Please be mindful and as generous as you are able. The Roof Project is moving along and I am repeating my re-quest to help FUND this project. We NEED everyone to help re-build our roofs! #Keep#kidsDry! Thanks to everyone to date! And of course, THANK YOU for your ever faithful Sunday offering! Peace!

Father John

Spiritual poverty of Western world

The spiritual poverty of the Western world is much greater than the physical poverty of our people. You in the West have millions of people who suffer such terrible loneliness and emptiness. They feel unloved and unwanted. These people are not hungry in the physical sense but they are in another way. They know they need something more than money, yet they don’t know what is it. What they are missing really is a living relationship with God.

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

AND AGAIN I SAY, REJOICE! This weekend’s prelude is a lovely little piece that has been sitting on my desk for over a year since I came back from last summer’s NPM convention. It’s a short piece, but very lively! I was instantly hooked on the song when I heard it, but never really found a use for it—until this weekend! The text tells us “Rejoice in the Lord always! And again I say, rejoice!” The one leper who realized that it was Jesus who healed him glorified God for his miracle, as we sing in praise for him with our prelude! The song is sung in complete unison, which is to say that everyone is singing the melody together. We are also blessed to have the Youth Choir singing at the 11.30am mass this week-end, and you will be able to hear their joyful voices throughout the Mass. Let us rejoice in all of our blessings! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Family Perspectives

Only one leper returned to thank Jesus for being cured. Sounds a lot like our families. We routinely do so much for each other that it is easy to forget to say thanks. Like Jesus, don’t wait for thanks to care and give. And be like the rare one in ten who expresses gratitude.

We have started using the new chrome books in KA! Students are using an app called Symbaloo for Phonics and Math lessons. One of the nice things about the Blended Learning program we are using is the ability for Mrs. Dober to plan a variety of lessons so that every student can be successful. Student Council elections were recently held. Mr. Carner, Mrs. Smith & Mrs. Patena are very proud of all of the students who ran for office. The votes were tallied and the 2016-2017 representa-tives are: President: Joey Hupp, Vice President: Conor Hack, Treasurer: Noah Rios, Stewardship: Emily Rapacz & Celeste Leopold and Ambassadors: Nora Chernosky & Rita Kleem Congratulations to all of the representatives. Mr. Carner is looking forward to an exciting year working with Student Council. Grades K-8 Faith Families met for the first time this past Friday, September 30th. Meetings will continue to take place monthly on each Stewardship/Fr. Marty Dress Down Day throughout the school year. The goal of the meeting was to get to know all family members and share some time telling about themselves to the group. Next, each student was asked to discuss the various roles they serve in a community whether it is at home, school, city, organization (i.e. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) The students then created a visual “window” picture of themselves to be placed on a "Family Home" poster that the 8th grade leader will assemble. Lastly, the family chose a family name to identify themselves with throughout the year that will be placed on the "Family Home" poster as well. A great time was had by all and students are looking forward to future oppor-tunities to spend time together. This past week the Berea Fire Department came in to speak with our Second grade classes regarding Fire Safety. The firefighters stressed the importance of having working smoke and carbon mon-oxide detectors in your homes. They also talked with the kids about having a plan in place to escape from a house fire and the importance of having a meeting spot. The Fire Department will come back later this year with a working Fire Trailer to let the children practice safely escaping from a smoke filled environment.
