Pentecost Sunday

2

First Things First

Pentecost, a day of wonder when the promised Holy Spirit descends and fills the faithful with courage, zeal and gifts to go and preach the Gospel to all nations! I would encourage you to take some time with the book of Acts, and to look with wonder on the birth of the Church as accounted by St. Luke. Those events took place a long time ago, but the same Spirit is with us today. And the promises of Christ made to and on behalf of his disciples regarding his Spirit in the latter chapters of the Gospel of John are for us today.

In my early adult years I: played piano for a Methodist Church; served as a youth director for a Taiwanese Presbyterian Church; worshipped at a non-denominational charismatic church; then joined a fellowship of house churches in Austin. My church-exploring finally found a home in the Catholic Church. Not because I was enamored of hierarchy, the Code of Canon Law, and a less-than-shiny institutional history over the past 2,000 years! No, I became Catholic because Jesus drew me and invited me. I had grown interested in the sacramental life, and entered with joy and peace of heart and mind in April 1999.

As I have come to know the Catholic Church -- warts, wounds, successes, failures, terrible scandals and saintly heroic examples -- I find myself called back to first principles. I have a role to play every day in God's kingdom, and I find the most grace when I embrace the real, not the ideal. How do we navigate, with joy and peace of heart and mind, the complexi-ties of Catholic life today? The answer is found in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 6:33, 34:

"Rather, seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough troubles of its own."

We are each asked by Christ to participate in what is real. We find this in the people we meet day in and day out, and as we give sacrificially of our time, our material goods, our gifts for the spread of the Gospel. For Catholics this takes place in the parish context, within a local diocese. No one in the world is without a diocese.

I am asking you this weekend and the next to consider your participation in the diocesan Encountering Christ Campaign. We have an obligation, as Catholic faithful, to listen to our Bishop's request to participate. I, as your rector, am asking your respectful consideration of this endeavor and at the very least, for you to fill out a pledge card (with a Yes/Maybe/No type of response). I also ask that you continue to consider the ways you are called to serve our parish with great joy and peace of heart and mind. The principles of First Things First applies directly to our salvation. You see, our path to heaven is in the context of a local parish and our diocese, not in spite of. And the precepts are clear: we are called to give materially to the work of the Church. I find that as we become highly analytical about how to fix and improve things, we often miss the Spirit. And so, we can miss the principle of blessing found with this first principle: to seek first the kingdom of God. We, as Catholics, must participate in our local Church.

Whose legacy do you and I hope to leave behind? I can ask myself this question as I prepare to leave Saint Mary Cathedral. Whose agenda? Mine for the parish, diocese and Church, or Christ's? Non-participation is certainly a weak response at best. And not one I would want to hold up to the test of Sacred Scripture, certainly not what we find in the book of Acts! This means, at the very least, listening and discerning. I also ask

you to keep Saint Mary Cathedral in mind with your summer tithing: as I mentioned last October, we will run the parish on the funds you provide. I am not going to worry about money, but rather choose to focus on showing up each day to offer you my priestly presence and ministry and to preach the Gospel in season and out. The rest truly is up to you. Make a choice today to continue giving sacrificially to the parish and the diocese. I believe this to be our most fruitful choice for the next generation of saints we are called to raise up through the power of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Tim

Everyday Stewardship

I am a sports fan, and perhaps you are one, too. I don't follow all sports, but those that I do follow usually involve a team. There is something about a team of individuals coming together for the goal of victory that is compelling. A team is only as good as the sum of all its players. If you have all the right talent at the right positions, great things can happen. What is hard for a fan to watch is a team that has great tal-ent but fails to achieve its goals because some players choose not to give their all to the team. Selfishness, apathy, or immaturity keep some from giving fully of themselves. The hopes and dreams of a team and fan base are dashed even though they had all they needed to be the best.

A parish is a lot like a team. Those in a parish community work together to achieve goals that ultimately lead others to Christ. We come together to give of ourselves to advance the mission of the parish. When we all are committed to fully giving our gifts and talents, fulfilling our position in the Body of Christ, then our hopes and dreams of transforming the world around us can become reality.

However, when we sit out on the sidelines, we hurt our team. When we hold back and choose not to give of ourselves, we diminish what is truly possible for our parish community. I believe God always provides our parishes with what they need to be fruitful and vibrant. His gifts to us exist in each other. If you think your parish could be so much more, than perhaps this week you should call your pastor or other pastoral leader and say, "Put me in coach!" -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Our new rector, effective July

1st, is Father Daniel Liu. He current-ly serves as director of St. Peter Catholic Student Center at Baylor University. Fr. Liu served two years at our parish as parochial vicar after being ordained in 2008. Let’s keep him in our prayers as he prepares for his new assignment as rector of Saint Mary Cathedral.

P. Tim

This particular retreat is scheduled for transitioning seniors as they leave home and find their way in campus life. The retreat dates are June 21-23 at Eagle’s Wings in Burnet about an hour’s drive west of Austin. Check out the details online at the TEC (Together Encounter Christ) website: www.tecofctx.wordpress.com.

Welcome to one of the newest feasts in the Catholic Church! The Memorial

of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, was established by Pope Francis in spring 2018. While the formal celebration is new, the honor is as old as the Gospels. Jesus spoke few words on the Cross, but several of them were addressed to his mother and the apostle John. "Woman, behold your son." "Son, behold your mother." This means far more than simply someone to care for Mary as she got on in years and someone for John to celebrate Jewish festivals with. John represents all of us, the Church. Jesus entrusted Mary to us as our mother. At the end of the historic Second Vatican Council in the midst of tumultuous times, Bl. Pope Paul VI formally declared Mary as Mother of the Church and invited us to pray to her under that title. With our recent celebration of the

birthday of the Church at Pentecost, we remember that every birth has a mother. Happy Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church!
