THE SERVICE CONTINUES ON THE NEXT PAGE WITH THE OPENING HYMN

Pastor Blessed be the Holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

All Amen. Pastor Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin. Reconciling God: All We confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny your presence in our lives. We place our

hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought, word, and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

Pastor Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor Dave

THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 14:13-21 After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him

to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles.

13Now when Jesus heard [about the beheading of John the Baptist], he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19Then he or-dered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

After the Lesson:

Pastor Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

People Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

▪ POST-EUCHARISTIC BLESSING & BENEDICTION ▪

All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the liv-ing and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the for-giveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who tres-pass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor During this time of communion we remember that the Lord is with us and so, we lift our hearts to Him. We give thanks and praise to the Lord, our God. For it is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, your only Son our Lord. This day we give you thanks for pouring out your spirit upon us, filling us with your gifts, lead-ing us into all truth, and uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith. Your Spirit gives us grace to call you Father, to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood.

People Amen.

Pastor The body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ strengthen us and keep us in His grace.

People Amen. Pastor May the God of peace who raised Christ from the dead strengthen your inner being for every good work.

And may the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, rest upon you and dwell within you this day and forever more.

People Amen.

ON TODAY’S HYMNS…

“Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service”

Albert F. Bayly, (1901—1984)

Albert F. Bayly wrote this text in response to a Hymn Society of America search for new hymns on social welfare. It was chosen as the theme hymn for the Second National Conference on the Churches and Social Welfare held in Cleveland, Ohio, October 23-27, 1961. The Hymn Society published the text in Seven New Social Welfare Hymns (1961).

The text begins with recognition of Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross and then points to the continuing needs of the homeless, the hungry, the prisoners, and the mourners. Bayly's words remind us of modern refugees, AIDS patients, and famine victims who are as close as our doorstep or who are brought to our attention via the news media. The final two stanzas encourage us to move from Sunday worship to weekday service; such integrity in the Christian life is truly a

liturgy of sacrifice, pleasing to God. (Source: http://www.hymnary.org)

“I Am The Bread of Life” Sr. Suzanne Toolan, RSM, (b. 1927)

This hymn about the Eucharist was written by American Sister of Mercy and schoolteacher Suzanne Toolan RSM (b

1927), based on John 6. It was written in 1964 for a for a San Francisco archdiocesan event, and was used widely in the Charismatic movement and in the wider church. Sr Suzanne has revised the lyrics to an inclusive-language version which is used in recent publications, although many people still use the original version. The song has a number of critics: the

vocal range is large, some people do not approve of any song which includes Jesus' words in the first person, and the words in verses 2-3 need to be sung very carefully to fit into the tune. Despite this, it has been translated into may dif-

ferent languages including Slavic language, Korean and Spanish (Yo Soy el Pan de Vida) and it has crossed denominational boundaries to be used in a range of churches. (Source: http://www.godsongs.net)
