Dear Father Gordon…. Last month the parish celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. Each year the celebration of Confirmation by the parish is a most joyful day. Prior to receiving the sacrament, the students have to write to me requesting to receive this sacramental gift of the Holy Spirit. I want to share with you some of the thoughts that the students in the class that I taught wrote to me. Dear Father Gordon: “When I receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, I will be more fully pre-pared to face the challenges that I will have In the future. I want my Catholic Faith to always be a big part of my life. I understand the importance of helping others, which is something Jesus has taught us to do.” Dear Father Gordon: “When we get confirmed, we are renewing the promises our parents made for us at Baptism. In Confirmation, we are accepting the gift of the Holy Spirit as mature adults. At baptism, we had absolutely no idea what was going on and our parents decided that we should be Catholics, but now we are making the decision on our own. I can actually say ‘yes’ by myself.” Dear Father Gordon: “Over the years, my love for God has grown making me want to continue my journey in my faith. I have learned to believe in God especially when others do not.” Dear Father Gordon: “I want to become a leader in this religion. The journey to this moment has been a long one. Dear Father Gordon: “I am at an age in my life where I have a better understanding of what Jesus really sacrificed for me, so making my confirmation will show him how thankful I really am.” Dear Father Gordon: “This sacrament is not the end but the beginning of my faith. I know how lucky I am and that I should be thankful for what I have. Looking back on the service hours, it feels good that I was able to help people. I feel that I am ready in fulfilling God’s work.” Dear Father Gordon: “Throughout my life I learned many things about the Catholic faith, through all the years of Religious Education at St. Martin’s. I understand that life can be occasion-ally difficult, but I will always try to strive for greatness for Jesus’ life.” Dear Father Gordon: “I know that I am not perfect but God will accept me that way. I will try to be a better Christian. Dear Father Gordon: “I completed many service hours which opened up my eyes to help others. I also completed the Stations of the Cross in class. You told us that Jesus went through many struggles in His life. He fell and people helped Him. He died and He saved my life and the lives of others. This showed me that you can make mistakes in life and always recover from them with Jesus.” Dear Father Gordon: “I have learned that confirmation is not the end of my faith life, but just the beginning. Thanks for reading my letter.” Dear Father Gordon: “In preparing for Confirmation I have completed several service projects, reaching out to the community. I gave out Easter baskets and I also helped shovel snow for my elderly neighbor who had just undergone leg amputation surgery. This helped influence my life because it made me realize that you have to put others before yourself. When I am confirmed, I would like to make a difference in the Catholic church by helping people that are less fortunate than I am in any way that I can. I was placed on this earth for a reason.” Here’s my favorite from Jillian:

Dear Father Gordon: “I was researching what Confirmation really means and I came across an analogy that really sums up its meaning for me. The analogy is likened to a ‘tattooing’ of the soul—tattooing it with the mark of Christ. My soul will be figuratively tattooed with the distin-guishing mark of dignity which I will carry with me some day into the next life. In a world where most people around me are tattooed with images—some good and some bad, all trying to brand themselves in one way or another, I like the idea of being marked with Christ.”

STEWARDSHIP Our Way of Life

SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS: On this Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Bap-tist, St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that “John heralded His (Jesus’) coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” How faithful are we to our baptismal promises? Christians are called to be good stewards of the personal vocations they receive. Each of us must discern, accept, and live out joyfully and generously the commitments, responsi-bilities, and roles to which God calls us. St. John’s birth is one of only three for which the Church celebrates a solemn feast – his, Our Lord’s, and the Virgin Mary’s. Pope Francis says, “Christ leads us to go out from ourselves more and more, to give our-selves and to serve others.” The value of giving our time, talents, and money is not just a nice proverb or a word of encouragement from a well-known figure. Research tells us that giving is a powerful means to personal growth and happiness. LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards who embrace the obli-gation to serve others as opportunities to live out our own baptismal promise to serve in and through the Church in God’s service. CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, faith, and coordinating shared with us by our BAPTISMAL PREPARATION PROGRAM. Host couples and a deacon or priest help families preparing for their child’s Baptism by explaining the ceremony and the significance of the sacrament. They also assist at the Baptism liturgy. Call Deacon Mike (631-264-0124) for more information or to make an appointment. PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP: 6/17/18 Collection: $15,486.50 Tanzania Mission Collection: $4,529.00 6/19/17 Collection: $13,529.50 Mission Collection: $6,738.00 2018 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: Parish Goal: $85,900.00 Pledged: $62,479.00 (72.7%) Collected: $46,729.00 Number of Donors: 216

SOCIAL MINISTRY  RESPECT LIFE: “Concern for the plight of the poor must be accompanied by a profound respect for the dignity of all human life. Otherwise, it can be corrupted and all too easily embrace procured abortion and euthanasia as acts of compassion toward the suffering. But it is a false compassion, which seeks to lessen human suffering by eliminating those who suffer. When we allow the killing of those most in need, we do not love the poor as Jesus did, who gave His life as a ransom for many.” (Most Rev. Raymond Burke, Archbishop of St. Louis). The June Life News is available for your information as you leave Church. Please pick up a copy. Please continue to pray for abortion. BLOOD DRIVE THANK YOU: We gratefully acknowledge all those individuals who made the effort during our blood drive on June 13 to give the gift of life. There are those of you who made the loving effort to donate, but for one reason or another, were unable to do so. Your kindness and thoughtfulness is appreciated as well. We collected 90 units of precious blood products. The success of our blood drive is based on the efforts of our many volunteers: our callers – Connie Allen, Jean Belmont, Barbara Burns, Hilda Conrad, Dorothy Garvin, Eileen Gilchrist, Nancy Harding, Debbie Montagna, Barbara Selvaggio, Ellen Sherman, and Debbie and Peter Zaino; our Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes, Fr. Gordon, John Tucci, Ben Bruccoleri, and Ryan Bott. Thank you all for your time and support. Our next drive will be in January, 2019. We look forward to another successful drive.

Good afternoon. My name is Andrea Weiner and I have been asked to speak to you about my faith. For those of you who do not know me personally, I was raised Jewish. My family followed the traditions of the faith more than the religious aspect. When I was four, I stubbed my toe on the coffee table and my mother told me I must have done something bad because God punished me. Those words stayed with me for the next 35 years of my life but in God’s infinite wisdom He gave me something to hold on to. There was a cartoon called Davey and Goliath in which the theme of every show was God’s love and forgiveness. The next few years I felt like I held on to scales-on one side God punished and on the other side Jesus loved and forgave. It didn’t take too long for me to realize which side I wanted to be on but I still did not have the full understanding of God’s love and mercy. My desire to be Catholic was not something you discussed in a Jewish home and so my faith remained in the traditions rather than in any religion. I always found it odd that my mother did not make me attend Hebrew school and have a bat mitzvah. Maybe she silently saw something in me that was different from my siblings. I got married by a rabbi even though my husband was Catholic because my mom was still alive but when she died my uncle (who lived with us) told my brother that I would be Catholic in 5 years. It only took me 3 ½. My husband and I started looking for a house when my uncle came to live with us. We saw this house across from St. Martin’s parking lot. I thought this would be the perfect home because I knew that I wanted to convert and I loved the idea of being so close to the church. When I walked into the house it was just perfect and once again God let me know that I was on the right path. The house was the family home of Monsignor Guarino and when I went upstairs I saw there was a bathroom next to the back bathroom. This would be great for my uncle who was elderly. When I walked in to the room there was a wall hanging that said Shalom. I didn’t need any more signs. After we moved in I stopped at the rectory. Now that my mom was gone I could follow my heart and become Catholic. I joined the Rite of Christian Initiation in Adults group and met every Monday night for 2 ½ years. I would go to Mass on Sundays and tears would fall on my cheek when it came for the people to receive communion because I knew that I was not able to do so. I should have left after the homily but I always stayed and the desire to receive Eucharist burned in my heart. In October it will be 25 years since I was baptized and received confirmation and first communion. By the way, I never left the Christian Initiation team. I just became part of the team. After Mass that night someone asked if I would like to become a Eucharist Minister (I had to wait 2 years) and I said I would be thrilled. Two years later I was commissioned and my husband was the first person to receive from me. The next day he went into the hospital to get a stent and he never came home. What got me through his being in the hospital was the thought of his receiving Eucharist for the last time from me. The love of St. Martin’s parish for me showed me once again that God never closes a door without opening a window. I decided to take a year off from work the following September and I was asked if I wanted to teach Religious Education. I enjoyed it so much that I have been teaching (except for one year) since then. At Christmas time Sr. Margaret Althisar who ran the Outreach program, asked if I would help with the Giving Tree Program. I was thrilled to do it and I have never left. A year later I started working on the Thanksgiving baskets. When I retired from my full time job, Sr. Margaret asked me if I would think about helping the Dominican sisters with their Gala in June. I’m still there and love it. In between I became a lector, served on the parish council and joined the hospitality committee. And just so I never forgot my roots God sent this incredible Jewish man into my life sixteen years ago and the circle was complete when we got married at a full Mass at St. Martins. In closing, I suppose that I was just a little Jewish girl who said yes and have never had a regret and received so much joy that sometimes I feel I could bust. Thank you for your time.
