This past Monday, Pope Francis, released his latest apostolic exhortation entitled Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad) – On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World. In it the Holy Father returns our attention to the ambition we should have to be saints. But he is careful not to scare off people with this reminder. It is, after
all, the same goal Jesus Himself set for us in the gospels. Holiness is a most accessible thing, and in Gaudete et Exsultate Francis gives great encouragement that this is possible for everyone. In simple and practical ways, he explains the opportunities each of us have to express our faith in God and to show that to others. He makes reference to many saints in our Church’s history, people who embraced whatever station in life God put them and, oftentimes in simple ways, joyfully lived that holiness. “The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of
themselves, the most personal gifts that God has placed in their hearts.” [11]
The inspiration for this exhortation’s title comes from Jesus’ beatitudes delivered in his Sermon on the Mount. There He tells us to “rejoice and be glad!” Pope Francis mines the richness of each beatitude and helps us see that the path to holiness entails being poor in spirit, meek, a peacemaker, hungering and thirsting for justice, and so on. Such conduct of life, though, shouldn’t make us dour or cause us to put on a solemn face. Just the contrary! The life of the Christian should exude joy. “Holiness is the most attractive face of the Church,” [9] he says. And this insight leads to one point Pope Francis makes about becoming a saint that I particularly liked reading. “Far from being timid, morose, acerbic or melancholy, or putting on a dreary face, the saints are joyful and full of good humor.” [122] With many quotations from scripture, Francis makes the case that the perfection of holiness is evidenced by a joyful spirit. “(God) wants us to be positive, grateful and uncomplicated.” [127] Taking ourselves too seriously or allowing ourselves to fall into despair over problems can show a lack of faith that we are in God’s good hands. Such attitudes stifle joy and make us unattractive to God and others. A joyful heart rests in security and fosters serene hope – a spiritual fulfillment the world cannot understand. In a footnote to this insight, the pope recommends we recite a prayer attributed to the English martyr St. Thomas More. There are many other important messages in Gaudete et Exsultate. I encourage you to go online or acquire a hardcopy of this exhortation and read it for yourself. It will help you discern your path to everyday holiness. Don’t let the proposition of becoming a saint intimidate you!

“Grant me, O Lord, good digestion, and also something to digest. Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it. Grant me a simple soul that knows to treasure all that is good and that doesn’t
frighten easily at the sight of evil, but rather finds the means to put things back in their place. Give me a soul that knows not boredom, grumbling,
sighs and laments, nor excess of stress, because of that obstructing
thing called ‘I’. Grant me, O Lord, a sense of good humor. Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke and to discover in life a bit of joy, and to be
able to share it with others.”

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
Remember the story of Abraham and the city of Nineveh? God was going to destroy the city if they didn’t shape up. But Abraham pleaded on their behalf. He kept pressuring God by asking that if he found 50 righteous citizens would God spare the city. Well, we’re looking for 50 righteous parishioners who would be willing to become part of the New Parishioner Welcoming Team. Here are some of the details: ! Teams will visit the homes/other venues acceptable to both the Team and the New Parishioner. ! New parishioners will be aware that they will be visited to complete the registration process. ! Visiting Teams will consist of 2 people. You can choose your partner or one will be selected for you. ! Training will be provided (1 meeting) with information from Fr. O’Toole on how to handle some of
the more complicated issues . ! Actual registration process can be completed in 60-90 minutes ! 25 Teams means that most teams will have 2 visits per year with some visiting 3 times. ! Currently we have 14 people/7 teams but we need more teams to start this process. ! For information or to join this Team, contact Jim Relleke at [email protected] or 314-504-5265.
In the wake of Jesus' death and resurrection, the Apostles and disciples are finally grasping the mission which Jesus gives them--to spread the Good News about God's Kingdom and about our salvation through the suffering and death of Jesus.
Even with their dawning recognition of what has happened, recognizing Jesus on the road to Emmaus as he broke the bread, the facts are difficult to wrestle with and explain. The Messiah the Christians preach was put to death, was God in the flesh and killed in the flesh, was rejected and condemned by those he came to save. And so the authorial community of the Acts of the Apostles frame Christ's death and resurrection in the long-view of salvation history: this is the work of "the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob...[who] glorified his servant Jesus...[and] brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer." Acts calls believers to be witnesses, living in the tension, believing in the perfect work of God, to understand suffering not as defeat but as evidence of life and growth. In Luke's Gospel, the resurrected Jesus appears to his disciples, alive--ghosts don't eat fish--assuring them of his conquering death, the fulfillment of God's plan, and the beginning of their mission--"you are witnesses of these things." Jesus asked them and asks us to see, with the eyes of belief, because of the promise of the prophets and fathers and mothers of the first Covenant, and the word of God from the beginning: life wins out over death.

WALKING YOUR WAY TO HEALTH
Why set a daily step goal? Walking is a form of exercise that's available to most
people. You don't need any special equipment other than some supportive walking
shoes. And there's no need for an expensive membership at a fitness center.
Walking for regular activity can help reduce your risk of these common
health
problems:
• Heart disease
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Depression
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate-
intensity exercise, such as brisk walking. But you don't have to jump feet-first into the 150-minute goal.
Start where you are and gradually increase your activity week by week.
Those 150 minutes a week can be divided in many different ways. Some people aim for 30 minutes of
exercise five days a week. Others fit in 10 minutes of exercise several times a day.
If your walking pace isn't speedy enough to qualify as moderate-intensity exercise, those steps still help
prevent the problems that can occur from sitting too much during the day. Adding any regular activity to
your routine is beneficial.
How to include more steps in your day
Once you've determined your goals, try these ideas for fitting more walking into your routine:
• Take the dog for a walk. If you don't have a dog, volunteer to walk dogs at an animal shelter. Or
combine your activity with social time by joining a friend to walk his or her dog.
• Try music/meditation/prayer. This may make your activity more enjoyable and help motivate you
to walk farther or faster.
• Include the family. Instead of an afternoon movie, go for a walk or hike together.
• Go in person. Instead of sending a work email, walk to your colleague's desk.
• Walk while waiting. Take a walk instead of sitting when you're early for an appointment or waiting
for a flight.
• Schedule workday walks. Put reminders in your calendar for short walking breaks to ramp up your
energy throughout the day. Have a one-on-one meeting? Plan to walk and talk.
• Park farther away. Choose parking spots farther away from the entrance. If you take the bus, get off
a stop early and walk the rest of the way.
• Take the stairs. Even going down the stairs counts as steps and burns calories.
How far will you go today? Your goal will depend on your starting point. But nearly everyone can reap the
benefits of walking more, step by step.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
Next weekend the Annual Catholic Appeal kicks off in our parish. This year’s ACA theme is Tell Your Story. The story of faith in our archdiocese is the diverse and colorful story of women and men, old and young, who know the peace and hope of the same savior, Jesus Christ. Their stories are as different as one can imagine. All of their stories tell one story, the story of Christ among us. Your generosity and gift to the ACA is at the heart of who we are, and how we are able to help so many who are waiting for someone to hear their story.
We will show the ACA campaign video during all masses next Saturday and Sunday. After each mass, our chairs, Tom and Marilyn Sweeney, and our co-chair, John and Kelli Vacca, will be present to pro-vide you with your pledge cards. Please participate in the ACA. For the last few years, St. Margaret of Scotland received over $50,000/year in grants from the ACA to assist in repairs of the church and school, for items such as resurfacing of the playground at the school. Beyond our parish, the Appeal provides many other channels of grace in the community.
Please take the time to complete your pledge card whether you are donating or not. We would love to
show the Archdiocese that all parishioners have taken the invitation to make a difference in the world very
seriously, by having over 50% participation in completing pledge cards.
