THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Twenty-eighth in Ordinary Time, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the Book of the prophet Isaiah where he tells the people that the Lord will provide a feast for all peoples where every tear will be wiped away. In the second reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippi-ans, Saint Paul speaks of the ability to do all things because of the strength that Christ provides. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to the chief priests and elders and says that many are invited to the feast but few are chosen. RELIGIOUS CALENDARS: As you leave church today, please feel free to pick up a 2018 Religious Calendar. Financial support enabling the parish to provide the calendars is provided by Pawlowicz Dentistry and McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home. We are grateful for their generosity.
IN NEED OF A COAT? If you are in need of a winter coat and/or winter items, please email Jo at [email protected]. All requests will be handled confidentially.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Saint Kilian Religious Education program needs 2 good volunteers! One volunteer is needed on Sundays from 10:00 am until noon, and a second is needed on Monday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm whenever CCD is in ses-sion. Need service hours? This is a great way to get them! Considering teaching or substituting in the future for our program? This is a good way to see what goes on each week. Duties will mostly consist of assisting at the front desk. Volunteers must be adults or high school juniors or seniors. Please contact Mary French if you are interest-ed, by email at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x2122. BAKE SALE TO AID A PARISH IN PUERTO RICO Some Saint Kilian parishioners with the assistance of their daugh-ter’s eighth grade classmates will sponsor a bake sale after the 10:00 a.m. Mass next Sunday, October 22nd. The pa-rishioners have family ties to this parish and wanted to do something to assist the parishioners trying to rebuild (Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Belen in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico). If you would like to donate baked goods, please drop them off in the vestibule of the church on Saturday, October 21 or bring them to the church the day of the sale.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Our music this week centers particularly on the concept of “gathering at the banquet table”. The Gospel is rich in metaphor about having us all called to the banquet. The banquet is ready and is now to be shared! Even our responsorial psalm (Ps 23) says, “You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil, my cup over-flows.” The refrain of the psalm is not a common one heard with this beloved psalm. (I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.) It can be seen as both a promise on God’s part and a pledge on our part. This psalm celebrates the covenant relationship we share with God. The verses sing of all the things that God constantly does for us – shep-herd, guide, protect, nurture. The refrain is our promise to accept God’s offer of life and to live always in God’s present. (reprinted in part, from Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN.) EMPTY NESTERS: The Empty Nesters are a group of parishioners whose children have moved out of the nest. We meet on the 3rd Friday of each month for fellowship, prayer and discus-sion. This year we are using the video program Divine Mercy. NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME! Our next meeting is on Friday, October 20th, at 6:30 in Meeting Room D. Contact Michelle Stanchina [email protected] for more infor-mation or to let us know you will be attending.

CVOL PARENT MEETING: The Catholic Vision of Love (CVOL) is the Diocesan mandated program that is taught to all 5th-8th graders. The classes cover the basis of human dignity, our call to purity and chastity, and how we apply this to our relationships. ALL parents are invited to preview the material and the program on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25th from 7:00-8:00 pm in the cafeteria of the parish/education center. It is in-tended for those beginning the program (5th grade par-ents) but all parents of 5th-8th graders are welcome. Please, no children for this meeting.
NOTE: students who attended the summer session of CCD have already had this course. If your child attends Catholic school, CVOL is taught in the classroom. These classes will be for those students in public school and/or in faith formation (CCD). There will be no CVOL classes taught during the regular faith formation scheduled sessions.
INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? For adults, the usual way to become a member of the Catholic Church is through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA is a gradual process of edu-cation and formation for those unbaptized, baptized in another Christian denomination, or baptized Catholic but who have not received other sacraments or for-mation in the faith. The RCIA program helps adults to grow in their relationship with God. Sessions will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in Meeting Room C in the lower level of the Church. Classes for RCIA meet on a regular basis on Monday evenings. Contact Deacon Ralph Bachner at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x2103 for more information or to sign up for the RCIA.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
THURSDAY MORNING MEN’S GROUP: Beginning in November, join Fr. Bober the second Thursday of each month for fellowship and sharing from 6 am to 7 am. All men of the parish are welcome to join us as we explore the lives of Biblical men. We will dive deeper into their struggles and battles that tell their story of triumph with God and how they can help us become men after God’s Heart. Please join us on Thursday, November 9th from 6 – 7 am in the Church Lower Level. Contact Deacon Ralph at [email protected] / 724-625-1665 x2103 to let us know you are attending or for more information. SKP SCHOOL PARENTS: if you are planning on visiting your child on their birthday at school, joining them for lunch or working the cafeteria, helping at a class holiday party or signing up as a chaperone, etc., you will need clearances completed in advance! Clearances are easy to do and I am happy to help. Contact Jo Scheller at [email protected].

This past week marked two major Marian dates on the calendar. October 7th was the feast day for Our Lady of the Rosary and October 13th was the 100th anniversary of the last of the Fatima apparitions and the miracle of the sun. Take the opportunity that Formed.org provides to learn more about our Blessed Mother.
LISTEN! Dr. Edward Sri is a nationally sought Catholic speaker who appears regularly on EWTN, and is a founding leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students). In this discussion (audio file) of his book The New Rosary in Scripture:
Biblical Insights on Praying the Twenty Mysteries (Servant Books), Dr. Sri shares Saint John Paul II's practical strategies for praying the Rosary better so you can encounter Jesus more deeply in prayer.
READ! Because of the prophetic nature of her messages, Our Lady of Fatima has been the subject of much controversy and speculation. In this book, Father Andrew Apostoli carefully analyzes the events that took place in Fatima and clears up lingering
questions and doubts about their meaning. He also challenges the reader to hear anew the call of Our Lady to prayer and sacrifice, for the world is ever in need of generous hearts willing to make reparation for those in danger of losing their way to God.
WATCH! Finding Fatima: This powerful and in-depth docu-mentary combines archival footage, dramatic reenactments, original interviews with Fatima experts, and stunning visuals to tell the whole story of Fatima from the initial apparitions of the angel who prepared the children for Our Lady's coming, to the Miracle of the Sun, including moving film footage from The 13th Day.
KIDS CAN WATCH TOO! In 1917, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta experienced a great miracle. While herding a flock of sheep outside the tiny village of Fatima, Portugal, the Blessed Mother visited them, telling the children great and wondrous secrets that would affect all of creation. The Day the Sun Danced is the inspiring true story of Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, who brought the message of Our Lady to the world.

First grade is certainly “falling” into a routine as we enter the beautiful season of autumn! In first grade, students enjoy a vibrant day that is filled with colorful and creative lessons. The first-grade teachers welcome the opportunity to invite their students to learn through engaging, hands-on activities. The first-grade teachers were able to take the students on an exclusive tour of the church to get a deeper understanding of the various holy symbols and to discuss the parts of the mass. Teachers have taught students that God has given each of us amazing gifts, which they are to share with others. Students also learned that they should find time each day to talk and listen to God in the silence of their hearts. In Language Arts, students are learning about adjectives. Teachers were able to take the students on a nature walk where each student chose something from nature to bring back to the classroom and use words to describe their object. First graders had “sweet smelling purple flowers,” “fuzzy plants,” “brown acorns,” and “jagged rocks.” This activity provided the students with a real-life experience of how an object can look, feel, smell, and sound. Hands-on learning continues during Math, where students use different types of manipulatives and games to further extend learning of addition and story problems. Teachers have also had the opportunity to incorporate ipads in the classrooms to help students practice their math facts. This is always a highlight of the week for first grade! The teachers stand witness to their students’ learning and see it evolve on a daily basis. It is beautiful and reassuring to know that our future is full of hope and promise, just as Christ intended.

Items can be dropped off anytime in the foyer (leading to front desk) by October 21st, and thank you for helping our youth practice com-passion for others.
