WELCOME BACK! A MESSAGE FROM

OUR NEW PRINCIPAL It is with great pleasure that I

welcome our students and school families to a brand new school year at Saint Joseph School! Our first day of class is Wednesday, September 6 and it will be a staggered opening to make it easier for parents with children in multiple grades to see each child off on the first day. Upper School (grades 5-8) will start at 8:00 am; the lower school (Kindergarten-grade 4) will begin at 8:30 am. (We will welcome our preschool students in the greenhouse on Monday, September 11.) There will be early dismissal at 12 noon on each of the first three days (September 6-7-8). After Care will

be available. Be sure to circle September 15-16-17 for our 4th annual Fall Family Carnival. It promises to be a fun-filled event for everyone—

school families and parishioners alike! We hope you can join us.

Dr. Paula Valenti

A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Saint Joseph School accepts students from 3 years old to Grade 8. Registration for September is still taking place. Call 201-261-2388 to arrange a visit.

TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 3, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

LEGION OF MARY (LOM) MONTHLY PRAYER WITH MARY (formerly THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER)

—SEPTEMBER 9

The Third Saturday of Prayer name has been changed to the LOM Monthly Prayer with

Mary. The format will remain the same but it will be held on different Saturdays each month depending on the different feasts. The September Monthly Prayer with Mary will be held on September 9. All parishioners are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the 8:30 Mass in Mary's Chap-el on Saturday, September 9. After the Rosary we will continue our series on the virtues of the Blessed Mother.

Saturday is the feast day of St. Peter Claver (1580-1654), the patron saint of Colombia and the patron

saint of apostolates to Black people. He was born in Spain’s Catalonian region, the son of a devout working class family. After graduating from the Jesuit University in Barcelona with distinction, he decided to become a Jesuit, and, after completing his novitiate, was sent to Majorca, where the Jesuits had a college. There he fell under the influence of the doorkeeper, Alphonsus Rodriguez, who would be canonized the same day as Peter. Alphonsus, a lay brother of great simplicity and holiness, urged Peter to go to the new world as a missionary. When Peter volunteered to do this, his provincial told him that his future would be decided in due time—by his superiors. But Peter did wind up being assigned to the missions, and arrived in Cartegena in 1610. There he finished his preparation for the priesthood and was ordained in 1616. That same year, he began his life’s work, caring for the slaves that were brought over from Africa. Things were horrible for them. Ten thousand would arrive in Colombia each year. A third of those who originally set out on the cruel six-to-seven week sea voyages died on the way there. Even though Pope Paul III and other Catholic authorities had condemned the slave trade as a great crime, it continued uninterrupted. Most slave owners had their slaves baptized, mainly to salve their own consciences. But this made it even harder for Peter Claver, since many of the slaves saw the baptisms as a kind of doorway to their cruel fate. Peter and his companions would meet the ships when they arrived, and give out lemons and brandy, food, medicine and tobacco. Then he would baptize and offer basic instructions in the Faith. It has been estimated that, over the years, he baptized 300,000 slaves. He also heard about 5,000 confessions a year. His work was basically just tolerated by the government and the slave owners. Most of the priests in the area chose to opt out of helping him in his apostolate, pleading their ignorance of the African languages. In his teaching efforts, Peter rather inventively made use of pictures, a happy strategy. Once the slaves went to their various plantations, Peter could see little of them. Spanish slaveholders were usually kinder than their English counterparts in the Caribbean, but that was not saying a lot. At least Spanish law allowed slaves to marry and did prevent families from being broken apart. Peter organized some missions to the plantations near Cartagena, but the owners didn’t exactly make him welcome, and even some of the Church authorities weren’t very happy about these initiatives.

Peter’s charitable works also extended to the two hospitals in the area, one of which was for severe maladies such as leprosy. The help he offered was not only for the soul, but for the body—and he did things out of love that most people would have found repulsive. He once said that “If being a saint consists I having no taste and

a strong stomach, I admit I may be one.” He also showed up at local prisons, doing heroic work there too. At age 70, he fell ill, and stayed that way for the last four years of his life. He couldn’t say Mass, and his sacramental administrations were mainly limited to hearing confessions every now and then. He was largely neglected by his community. The young Black man who was appointed to look after him was impatient with him, often ignored him and sometimes treated him roughly. The only notice the authorities took of him was when he was falsely reported for re-baptizing Africans. Peter’s uncomplaining response to this was to compare himself to a jackass. He said of that animal

When he is evilly spoken of he is dumb. When he is overloaded he is dumb. When he is despised and neglected he is still dumb. He never complains in any circumstances for he is only an ass. So also must God’s servant be.

But after he died, as sometimes happens, popular acclaim immediately effervesced, and the civil and church authorities who offered him little support during his life and who tended to regard his efforts as something of an ineffective nuisance organized elaborate public honors for his funeral. St. Peter Claver was a very great man, and a saint who can hardly be praised enough. His life has many great lessons for Catholics and all other human beings.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? — MATTHEW 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

(Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 8 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 15-November 3. If you would like to participate or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.
