Chancery News: We continue to pray for all who are impacted by the natural disasters this year, both the tornadoes that hit Cole, Hickory, Miller and Randolph counties this past week, and the flooding of major rivers in our Diocese. Counties impacted by that flooding include Boone, Callaway, Camden, Chariton, Clark, Cole, Gasconade, Howard, Lewis, Linn, Maries, Marion, Miller, Moniteau, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Osage, Pettis, Phelps, Perry, Pike, Ralls, Randolph and Saline.

Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri, an agency of our Diocese, is working with other agencies to ensure a coordinated and integrated network of support is provided to those affected. If you or your parish group would like to vol-unteer, please contact United Way at 2-1-1. It is serving as the central clearinghouse to match immediate needs with re-sources.

As Catholic Charities did in response to the 2017 floods, it is putting in place a process to assist those who have a very fragile safety net: people without insurance, who are not homeowners, on limited income, with disabilities, or whose live-lihood has been impacted by the natural disaster. If you are interested in assisting in this effort, please consider donating to Catholic Charities’ Disaster Relief Fund. Every dollar will be used for direct assistance of people affected by the flooding and tornadoes. You can donate online at diojeffcity.org or at cccnmo.org.

Thank you for your generosity. ___________________________________________

A Deacon: What can / does a deacon do?

Given that we will now have an ordained deacon serving St. Joseph’s and St. Anthony’s… Dea-con Jim Haaf, I would like to mention a few things that a deacon does at the Holy Mass and out-side of Mass. At Mass, the deacon generally sets the altar, proclaims the Gospel, preaches on occasion (at our parishes - Dn. Jim will be preaching once a month). Deacons can also witness marriages (outside of the Holy Mass, as he cannot “say Mass”), minister at a burial, and baptize children or adults. The priest is the Ordinary Minister of the both the Eucharist and the Precious Blood. The dea-con is the Ordinary Minister of the Precious Blood. Often, you will see the deacon with the chalice at distribution of Holy Communion, although it is not mandatory that he communicates the Precious Blood only. (Often this will be at the discretion of the Pastor.) A deacon has a special mission to those who are homebound. The deacon is the “liaison” for the parish, who brings Communion to those in need. The deacon is called to minister to the poor and the needy. The deacon also assists with sacramental prep, i.e., marriage, baptism, RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults).

Corpus Christi Procession to be held June 23, 2019, after 10 a.m. Mass What is a Eucharistic Procession? Corpus Christi is celebrated in June, the first Sunday after the feast of the Trinity. St. Juliana, a young Belgian nun in Retinne in the 13th century, while in prayer received the inspiration for a feast that celebrates and promotes the gift of the Real Pres-ence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, and from that moment, the Feast of Corpus Christi spread throughout the world.

The Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord and the procession with the Blessed Sacrament, celebrating the sacrament and signifying God’s presence in our world and in our lives and reminding us of our common pilgrimage to heaven, is a prayerful and edifying act of the entire Church. When it can be done, as a public witness of the veneration toward the Most Holy Eu-charist, a procession is to be conducted through the public streets. http://www.eucharistia.us/eucharistic-procession/) History of Corpus Christi for St. Joseph Parish, Westphalia Corpus Christi is Latin for “Body of Christ.” Over 100 years ago, St. Joseph’s Parish began elaborate festivities to commem-orate Corpus Christi and the celebration continued in modified forms until the 1950’s. Early observance of the feast was held for a good harvest of crops. The tradition involved four worship stations. At each station, the front porch was set with an al-tar and a tabernacle. A procession would go through the highly decorated town, the priest performing Benediction at each station.

In 1998, the tradition was reinstated in modified form and, in 1999, included one of the original altars.

What to expect

After Communion, the monstrance is prepared with the Blessed Sacrament. Instead of a closing hymn, all kneel while a hymn of adoration is sung and Father incenses the Blessed Sacrament. He then goes to the altar to take the monstrance in his veiled hands. All taking part in the procession stand. As the first hymn begins, the procession proceeds in this order:

1. Cross bearer, flanked by the candle bearers

2. The incense

3. Canopy, with only the priest carrying the Eucharist

4. Those carrying the banners

5. The First Communicants who will be seated together

6. The people

The procession will go to three stations:

1. St. Joseph statute outside church

2. Trudi’s Bed and Breakfast porch

3. Cabin behind the Westphalia Historical Society Museum

At each location, Father will lead us in adoration and prayer, followed by blessing the people with the Eucharist. From the third location, we will return to the church, closing with Benediction.

If you are not able to participate in the procession, please join us at one of the stations.

“Restoring Our Roots” Capital Campaign Cash received toward renovation: $1,523,763 Amount still owed toward pledges: $ 498,512 Sale of convent: $ 162,000 Campaign Total To-Date: $2,184,275

The sale of the convent puts us at $2.184 million committed to the renovation. We are still work-ing to finalize bids and award contracts for the remaining portions of the renovation. Please note we still have a lot of money to raise toward pledges. Each dollar will be needed to complete the renovation.

Church Renovation Update: 5/30/2019

The roof replacement continues. Missouri Builders is finishing up the install of metal panels on the clerestory roof. The fascia and gutters have been replaced. Tear-off of the clerestory vinyl siding has begun and stamped metal panels will soon be installed. Once the clerestory is com-plete the sanctuary/lower roofs will be replaced. This should all be completed by the end of July.

The brick on the boiler chimney has been repaired and the chimney will soon be capped.

Framing for the new restrooms is complete. Plumbing rough-in has started. Part of the restroom work will be on hold until we determine paint color and wood types to ensure it blends with the overall aesthetics of the interior renovation. A reminder: this work is being completed by our very generous and talented parishioners.

The electrical conduit that is currently exposed in the rear of church near the north steps (by the new restroom) will eventually be boxed in and painted to match the rest of church. It will not be noticeable.

Repairs to the lower windows continue. Most of the lower level stained glass windows have had the storm windows removed and a clear exterior protective layer of glass glazing installed. Some of the obscure glass windows in the stairwells have been replaced with clear glass. Painting of the exterior window wood trim is underway. Repairs to the clerestory windows (upper windows) will not be conducted until the scaffolding has been installed in the church later this fall. Clere-story windows will be removed in October, sent to Wisconsin for repairs, and reinstalled around January 2020.

Conrad Schmitt provided interior painting renditions to aid in interior color and scheme selection. These renditions were viewed by the Phase I and Phase II committees. No decisions have yet been made. The contractor plans to begin around October 1 and hopes to finish around February 2020. For examples of their work please view their website: https://conradschmitt.com/.

Scaffolding bids are still being reviewed. There will be no scaffolding installed until after Octo-ber 1. No pews will need to be removed during the scaffolding phase. The scaffolding will sit above the pews and allow for Mass to continue.

We have two bids for the repairs to the terrazzo floor. A contractor will be selected after we have reached a decision on interior painting to ensure we have a good match. The carpet in the sanctu-ary will be replaced with solid-surface flooring, most likely porcelain tile.

There are also two bids for pew replacement. Like the floor repairs, we are waiting for the interi-or paint scheme before moving forward with pew color and wood choice. This will also impact the replacement of interior wood doors, which will match the wood and color of the pews.

The parish should soon have more precise costs to help budget the remaining portions of the reno-vation. These include costs for scaffolding, pews, flooring, interior lighting, doors, enhancements to the balcony and steps, a new confessional, the clock/bell system, and other miscellaneous items. These updated budget figures will be shared in a future bulletin.

There will be various projects/tasks in the renovation where parishioner help will be needed. Some examples include: pew removal, sanctuary carpet removal, stairway carpet removal, con-fessional demolition, clean-up each week prior to Mass, etc. If parishioners are willing to assist with these tasks it will help keep renovation costs down. Please consider helping with these tasks when the time comes.
