Dear Parishioners,
First of all, Good News. Though some parishioners
already know, I want to tell you all that I have secured
the services of another priest who will “take up the slack” for those
days at the beginning of my vacation and at the end of my vacation. Let
me reiterate my vacation plans: I’ll take off for Florida on Monday,
August 10, after the 7:30 am Mass and I’ll return Friday, August 28.
From Tuesday, August 11 through Friday, August 14, the 7:30 am
Masses will be celebrated by my friend Father Scott Haynes. He will
also take the Masses from Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August
28. My FSSP colleague, Father Zachary Akers will celebrate all Masses
from Saturday, August 15 through Monday, August 24.
I have plans to spend my time in Florida with my brother-in-law, as I
did last year. This year, though, instead of celebrating Mass in Fort
Myers, I’ll celebrate Mass in Naples. I’m very much looking forward to
it. I only hope that Wuhan doesn’t rear its ugly head and put the kibosh
on my vacation. Ah, well, even if it does, my brother-in-law and I will
simply hang out at his sister’s house in Naples. It’s a bit far to the Gulf,
but she has a lovely pool.
July is the month of the Precious Blood. The feast of the same name
opened the month on July 1. The feasts of some quite famous saints are
celebrated this month: The Visitation of Our Lady; Ss. Cyril and
Methodius who brought Catholicism to the Slavs; St. Bonaventure; Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel; St. Mary Magdalene; St. James, the Greater; St.
Martha; St. Ignatius of Loyola.
On the other hand, we have reminders of worldly evils that happened in
July; among them: President Garfield was shot; The Battle of Britain;
the detonation of the first atomic bomb; the great fire of Rome; and,
perhaps arguably, the worst event for societies and the Church, the start
of the French Revolution, le Quatorze Juillet, 14 July, le Jour de la
Bastille, Bastille Day.
I have an idea. How about this July we all make a renewed promise to
the Blessed Trinity, dedicating ourselves to further the work of the
Church in today’s world and to let ourselves be washed, over and over
again in the Blood of the Savior. God bless you all.

Dressing for Church
Yes, it’s quite hot. Yes, it’s summer. Still, there is a certain amount
of decorum that should be observed when entering God’s House and
worshipping Him at Mass. These are not the times to sport your
favorite beach-wear, regardless of how sporty and fashionable it is.
Nor should shorts and flip-flops rule the day. Our church is very
nicely air-conditioned so, it’s not too much to dress modestly and,
yes, tastefully, for God. Gents should make every effort to wear
dress slacks and, at least, a sport shirt. Ladies are always at their
most beautiful in a tasteful dress or skirt and blouse. Should ladies
choose slacks, remember looser is always more comfortable than
tighter. Think Betty White rather than Kim Kardashian.
