The Word of the Lord First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 Abraham pleads with the Lord, who planned to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of the evil and sin in those cities. Abraham asks him if he would spare the city if fifty, forty, thirty, twenty or even only ten innocent people were found there. God says that he would spare the cities even for the sake of only ten.

Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Paul explains to the Colossians that through baptism, they are raised to life with Christ because they believed in the power of the God who raised him from the dead. Even though they once lived in sin, their sins have been pardoned through Jesus.

Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 Jesus' disciples asked him how they should pray. He gave them some phrases similar to those now used in the Lord's prayer. Jesus also reminds the disciples how even men with sins are able to give good things to their children, and explains how much more the heavenly Father wants to give to us.

EMERGENCY: St John's Parking Lot is being totally resurfaced, and no one has any access to the PANTRY for the next two weeks. We had to cancel Clark and St. John's through the rest of July. We are hopeful to open by Tues. Aug. 6th, but I need to wait for further advisement.

ST. JOHN’S PARKING LOT

For the next 2 weeks we will be repaving our Parking Lot. Monday through Friday there will be no parking in the Parking Lot. Please use care if walking through the area during the construction. Until the pavement is cured, please only back out without cutting the wheel sharply. Thank you for your help and patience.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

“Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say, Father, hallowed be your name…”

Jesus directed His prayer to the Father. Paul tells us we can pray only through the inspiration of the Spirit. The Trinity is found in every prayer, ‘How much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?’

We, like the disciple, ask the Lord to help us to pray and to pray better. We pray in response to the Spirit’s urging. We pray in many ways, with words, in silent meditation and reflection, we pray with our hands in serving others. Jesus is ever present to lead us, strengthening our prayer life.

Let’s use an example. In teaching people how to swim we can tell them to close their mouths, kick their feet, move their arms and hold their breath. That’s teaching technique, but is not swimming. One must enter the water and try.

Prayer is no different. We learn to pray better by praying. Like swimming we are refreshed and renewed by our experience.

So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Jesus Christ

As I go to work, Be with me Lord. Be the patience when I’m frustrated. Be the endurance when I am tired. Be the wisdom when I am uncertain. Be the inspiration when I’m out of ideas. Be the peacemaker when I feel hurt. Be the comforter when I feel overwhelmed. Be the energy when I am weary. Be the guide when I am confused. Be the forgiver when I get it wrong. Be with me Lord, today.

St. John’s Family Page

Where do you go if you want to learn how to do something? Thirty, forty or fifty years ago, the answer to that question might be… the library or firsthand from an experienced person. Today, the immediately reply would be – the internet. We know that the internet has many videos on how to do something… from experts and amateurs. We can get many different perspectives. There’s a wealth of information at our fingertips. People at the time of Jesus also asked the question: How do I ….? In today’s gospel, the question asked is about prayer … Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. In other words, how do I pray? Specifically, the disciples wanted to learn from the expert, Jesus, about prayer. Jesus invites us in today’s gospel to a deeper understanding of prayer. First, we should start with the question: why do we pray? We know that at the heart of our prayer is our relationship with the Most Holy Trinity. A relationship requires listening, communication, exchange and action. The Holy Spirit prompts us to pray. The Holy Spirit takes the initiative. While we may say, that I am praying… it is the presence and action of God in our lives that draws us closer into relationship with Him. We can count on with absolute certainty that our prayers are heard by God and responded to “on God’s time”. God gives us the grace we need in every situation of our life. A French mathematician in the 17th century named Pascal said: “Prayer is one of the ways that God chose to share His infinite power with us.”

Sometimes we speak of the power of prayer. This is God’s power. We always pray for the best outcome – but we should be ready to accept God’s Will and plan, knowing that we are under His divine guidance and providence every second of the day. Jesus also talks about the importance of trust and perseverance in prayer. For everyone who asks receives; and the one who seeks finds: and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. In today’s first reading, Abraham persists in his intercessory prayer to have mercy on the innocent righteous people of Sodom. Moses would also intercede for the sake of the people, asking God to forgive their sin. When we pray the Our Father, let’s reflect on how much God love us, forgives us and deeply desires that we be in a friendship with Him now and or all eternity! God bless us all always! Deacon Mike
