Gluten Sensitive? Here at St. James, we have hosts available during Communion that are practically gluten-free. They have a gluten content of 0.01%, which is a negligible amount for most. Ask the priest or extraordinary minister for a gluten-free host and they will be happy to oblige!

The Collection for June 10 was $ 8,671.00.

"To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade." Excerpted catholicculture.org.

What our Catholic Leaders are saying about… Separating Families at the U.S./Mexico Border

“Forcibly separating children from their mothers and fathers is ineffective to the goals of deterrence and safety and contrary to our Catholic values. Family unity is a cornerstone of our American immigration system and a foundational element of Catholic teaching. ‘Children are a gift from the Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward.’ (Psalm 127:3) Children are not instruments of deterrence but a blessing from God. Rupturing the bond between parent and child causes scientifically-proven trauma that often leads to irreparable emotional scarring. Accordingly, children should always be placed in the least restrictive setting: a safe family environment, ideally with their own families.” Bishop Joe S. Vasquez, Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration, June 1, 2018.

UPDATE! 2018 Vacation Bible School In April/May, all parents were invited to participate in a planning meetings for VBS for this year, and to respond to an email survey, to gauge interest in having their children participate in VBS this summer. Sadly, we will not have Vacation Bible School this summer at St. James, due to the lack of adult and student volunteers and a low indication of enrollment. Rather, as suggested by some parents, we will hold monthly “VBS days” - a time for whole family catechesis and fun! Information is included in the 2018-2019 RE Registration Packages .

IT’S HERE! A new way to growing in knowledge and under-

standing of our Catholic faith and to fall deeper in love with GOD—in the convenience of your own

home...for the whole family.

This week’s recommendation for younger parishioners…

Instead of summer reruns, offensive or violent summer movies, or more video games—why not

watch the adventures of

Brother Francis and/or the Catholic Heroes?

Form yourself and your children through films!

Need access instructions? formed.org cards

Happy Father’s Day! ST. JOSEPH, foster father of Jesus and husband of Mary, was a humble man, loving husband and father. Without question, he needed God in his dreams to save his family. He respected God and followed his commands. Joseph was compassionate and caring. He died before Jesus’ public ministry began, with Mary and Jesus close by, the way we would all like to leave this earth. He is the patron saint of the Church, carpenters and fathers.

PRAYER: Saint Joseph, watch over all fathers as carefully as you watched over Jesus. Protect, pray for and guide all fathers here on earth, and obtain God's blessing upon them and their families. Amen

Save the Date! Vespers in the Park—Sunday, July 8th 7PM

Ice Cream Social after Vespers.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! For the prayers, cards, food and good wishes that so many of you gave to me during my recent knee

replacement. I am speedily on the mend and happy to be back serving you and God.

Father O’Blaney’s Chronicles Just a little history

Father O’Blaney’s Novitiate was from 1952-1953.

It started after his 2nd year of college.

The date of Father O’Blaney’s Investiture, which is the beginning of Novitiate, was on August 1, 1952 at St. Mary’s College in Ilchester, MD. On August 1, 1952 Father received his habit and then on August 2, the class that was there before took their Temporary Vows. His mother and

grandmother came up for it. “I went up and played the organ, my Mother was there, and she cried. She realized it was me playing the organ.” She had never heard him play before. “I understand my mother played the piano, but I never heard her. I had learned the organ during Novitiate…for a month or so… by the chords.”

“Novitiate was a pretty strict year. We couldn’t get any mail or write anyone. They would save up the mail and give it to us at Christmas. We prayed a lot.” During this time, Father never saw his family and couldn’t have visitors. “We weren’t allowed to go off grounds. It is different now but, in my times, it was very strict.”

“We had rooms without running water. They gave us wash stands that had a pitcher and basin on it, that is how we washed. This was the first time I had ever had my own room.” (At home in New York, he had shared the 3-room apartment with his family of 6.) “If you came late you had to kiss the floor and get a blessing from the Novice Master. We spent a ½ hour preparing for Mass, ½ for Mass and

then another ½ for Thanksgiving Mass that the priest said. When we wanted to go to breakfast, we needed permission from the Novice Master. And he would sometimes go someplace and the whole class 12 of us would have to look for him. We had to get his permission to eat. Taught us Obedience.”

He would use self-flagellation and a cilice on his arm or leg for a spiritual discipline. This was a widespread practice in some parts of the Catholic ministry up to the 1960s, but is uncommon today. Saint Jose Maria Escriva often wore a cilice (a band of chain links with small prongs, typically worn around the upper thigh.) In most recent times, Saint John Paul II was known to use self-flagellation, and Mother Teresa, who with her sisters would voluntarily live in extreme poverty.

“I remember Novitiate. I didn’t mind it. Some of the guys did but I was ok. After Novitiate we became Redemptorists. We professed the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience (Temporary Vows for 3 years) on August 2, 1953.”

These pictures were taken in 1953 after Father took his vows and received his biretta.

“It wasn’t a big event, but it was for us. “
