STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Living a life of stewardship speaks not of wealth of

possessions – money, material goods, real estate; nor does

it speak of poverty with regard to the same. Stewardship

identifies a way of life that recognizes everything comes

from God. Our food and clothing, cars and trucks,

vacations, houses, recreational toys, are all gifts from God

who loves us and calls us sons and daughters.

Stewardship calls us to acknowledge God as Father and

Provider, Giver of all that is good. When we do this and

share what we have so others may also enjoy, we become

generous, accountable stewards and find favor with God.

In the act of sharing, we also give back to God what He

has already, so graciously and lovingly given us.

Our sharing may be giving someone money, a place to

stay, transportation, perhaps a ride to Mass. It may be

food, water, lunch or dinner out for someone to celebrate a

special occasion, or no occasion at all. It may be time

spent sitting and talking with someone. It may be a time to

merely sit and listen, allowing someone else to delight in

conversation about something special or significant in

their life.

Stewardship is a life of selfless giving to others. These

others may be your child, your spouse, your parent, a

friend or a stranger. Do you have the time to “be” for that

someone who needs you?

The direct opposite of selfless giving is Greed, the second

Capital sin. Can we spare the money? Can we spare the

time for lunch or dinner, conversation, or perhaps, prayer?

Can we recognize others’ needs?

“Against the values of the world, Jesus gave up his power

in heaven to live as a poor outcast on earth. Loving his

people as a shepherd loves his sheep, he led with mercy

over judgment, justice over greed, reconciliation over

exclusion, and humble service over heavy demands. He

associated with the weak and the lowly while criticizing

the rich and haughty, announcing a kingdom turned

upside down in which the last shall be first and the first

shall be last. In his final act of humility, he laid down his

life so that others might live, telling his disciples to do the

same.

Against the values of the world, Jesus Christ came

preaching and showing that greatness is not found in

power, wealth, and prestige, but in weakness, poverty, and

humble service to the lost and forgotten.”1

Carole Drake

Pastoral Assistant and Community Outreach

Nuestra comida y ropa, automóviles y camiones,

perdidos y olvidados”.1

The 18th

Sunday in Ordinary Time

The cake is frosted, the guests have arrived, and the gifts

are piled high. One by one, the packages are opened, and

one by one, the child reaches for another. Who among us

hasn't seen a child who appears crestfallen when the gifts

run out? Even the abundance isn't quite enough. Today's

Gospel tackles a key question in the spiritual life -

grateful or greedy?

"There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful

harvest." We all recognize the need to be practical.

Raising a family, there's need to save for all sorts of

things beyond normal day-to-day costs - medical bills,

family vacations, private school, rainy day funds,

retirement. Jesus doesn't critique the rich man for simply

having an abundant harvest. It's his mentality. Does the

rich man sell off the extra to make the needed repairs to

the back fence or to invest in some additional livestock to

grow the business? Perhaps donate some of the excess to

the poor? No. "You have so many good things stored up

for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!" The man

wants to hoard and indulge with no concern for others.

Jesus doesn't condemn prudent saving or owning

necessary items. He calls us to purify our attitudes.

"Guard against all greed... one's life does not consist of

possessions." We are called to be good stewards. This

means being practical. It also means remaining open to

God's invitation with our resources. Are we tithing to our

parish? Do we give alms to the poor? Does our weekly

entertainment far outstrip what we offer to others? Life is

not about "stor[ing] up treasure for [our]selves." The

more we grow in gratitude and generosity, the more we

become "rich in what matters to God."

(Lucas 12:20).

a Dios. El reto es ser rico en lo que vale a los ojos de

Dios.

SEASONAL REFLECTION

Celebrating Saint Dominic

On August 8th, we celebrate a burning heart and a radical life! Dominic Guzman was born in

1170 to a Spanish noble family. From a young age, Dominic had a sense of Gospel values. A

famine struck the country when Dominic was a university student. He sold his clothes, his

furniture, and even his manuscripts to buy food for the poor. Dominic also attempted (twice!) to

sell himself into slavery as barter for the freedom of others. He became a monk and was

commissioned by the Pope to preach throughout southern France, where false Christian teachings

had taken root. He founded a house for authentic Catholic education, which would become the

first location of his new order - the Order of Preachers, now known by the title Dominicans.

Dominic and his followers traveled throughout Europe preaching, teaching, and calling

people back to a life of conversion, prayer, and virtue. Saint Dominic, pray for us!

Next weekend’s special collection is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Please give generously to those that have given a lifetime.
