T he Apocalypse, or Revelation to John, the last book of the Bible, is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which at best appears unusual to the modern reader. Symbolic language, however, is one of the chief char-

acteristics of apocalyptic literature, of which this book is an outstanding ex-ample. Such literature enjoyed wide popularity in both Jewish and Christian circles from ca. 200 B.C. to A.D. 200. This book contains an account of visions in symbolic and allegorical lan-guage borrowed extensively from the Old Testament, especially Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Daniel. Whether or not these visions were real experiences of the author or simply literary conventions employed by him is an open ques-tion. This much, however, is certain: symbolic descriptions are not to be taken as literal descriptions, nor is the symbolism meant to be pictured realistically. One would find it difficult and repulsive to visualize a lamb with seven horns and seven eyes; yet Jesus Christ is described in precisely such words (Rev 5:6). The author used these images to suggest Christ’s universal (seven) power (horns) and knowledge (eyes). A significant feature of apocalyptic writing is the use of symbolic colors, met-als, garments (Rev 1:13–16; 3:18; 4:4; 6:1–8; 17:4; 19:8), and numbers (four sig-nifies the world, six imperfection, seven totality or perfection, twelve Israel’s tribes or the apostles, one thousand immensity). Finally the vindictive lan-guage in the book (Rev 6:9–10; 18:1–19:4) is also to be understood symboli-cally and not literally. The cries for vengeance on the lips of Christian martyrs that sound so harsh are in fact literary devices the author employed to evoke in the reader and hearer a feeling of horror for apostasy and rebellion that will be severely punished by God. The lurid descriptions of the punishment of Jezebel (Rev 2:22) and of the de-struction of the great harlot, Babylon (Rev 16:9–19:2), are likewise literary de- vices. The metaphor of Babylon as harlot would be wrongly construed if inter-preted literally. On the other hand, the stylized figure of the woman clothed with the sun (Rev 12:1–6), depicting the New Israel, may seem to be a nega-tive stereotype. It is necessary to look beyond the literal meaning to see that these images mean to convey a sense of God’s wrath at sin in the former case and trust in God’s providential care over the church in the latter.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time: November 13, 2016 3

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: In the Gospel of the Mass this Sunday, we are given a glimpse into the end of the world. The Church always turns Her attention to this theme as the liturgical year comes to a close. As you know, the Church year concludes with next Sun-day’s Solemnity of Christ the King. So today, our attention is directed to the fu-ture, when the King of glory will return in majesty and bring His kingdom on earth to completion. We shouldn’t waste time trying to predict when the world will end. Many of the first Christians expected Christ’s return in their own lifetime. More recently, some falsely claimed that the year 2,000 would be the chosen time for Christ’s second coming. They were obviously mistaken. Three truths concerning this event are essential: 1. It will take place. Jesus speaks clearly about the fact and nature of His sec-

ond coming. His words are not metaphor. Today’s Gospel contains Christ’s prophecy of the signs that will precede his glorious return. When the ap-pointed time arrives, “they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” (Luke 21:27).

2. The time is unknown. Jesus Himself says, “of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father on-ly” (Matthew 24:36). This saying simply indicates that it is not part of Christ’s earthly mission to reveal the time of His return.

3. We must be prepared. The end of the world for us will be the day that God calls us from this life. Be prepared, Christ tells us, for “you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13).

In a certain sense, Christ “returns” to earth every time that one of His disciples lives and loves as Jesus did. There is no better way to prepare for Christ’s return than to live a life that is faithful to the Gospel. Through the sacraments – espe-cially the Holy Eucharist and Confession – we are offered all the spiritual help we need in order to be prepared with the Lord returns. Let us take advantage of these gifts. As we anticipate the coming of the Lord, our task includes the active proclama-tion and sharing of the Gospel. To that end, each parish of the Archdiocese is asked to receive a missionary priest each year. This weekend, Fr. Patrick Keyes, C.Ss.R. will visit our parish and will give the homily at all the Masses. As a mem-ber of the Passionist Order of priests, Fr. Keyes will share how his community brings Christ to others through parish missions, retreats, and other works of evan-gelization. A special offering will be taken in support of the works of the Passionist order. You may make a contribution by cash or check, the latter being made out to the parish. We will forward all of the collected funds to the Passionist communi-ty. Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Commuter Mass For several years now, the priests of Regina Caeli Parish have offered a weekday morning Mass in Latin at 6:30 a.m. From now on, the 6:30 a.m. Mass will be in English and will be offered by the priests of our parish. Why not start your day by meeting the Lord in His holy Word and in the Holy Eucharist? Mass will end by 7:00 a.m. R.C.I.A. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is for people who are thinking about the possibility of becoming Catho-lic. It is for people who have not been baptized, people of other faiths or people who have been baptized Catholic but did not complete the sacraments of Initiation. This is a beautiful process, with no pressure to commit to our faith community, in which interested persons slowly explore the beliefs of the Catholic Church and discern, over a period of many months, if they desire to become Catholic. If you are interested, or have a relative, friend or co-worker who has expressed this interest, please call: Nadia Jara: 281- 463-7878 ext. 337 or at [email protected] Offertory Counters Do you want to share your time and talents? Parish Nursing Ministry The Seas Parish Nursing ministry is comprised of health care professionals and others who have the health of our pa-rishioners at heart. They are nurses, therapists, educators, and experts in the fields of health promotion. Some work in home health, elderly assistance, aging, hospice, gen-eral medicine, surgery, oncology, obstetrics, domestic vio-lence and intensive care. They work to coordinate care for parishioners in their time of need. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month. Build a house on Solid rock. A foolish person builds on sand. When the rains and floods come, and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash!

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time: November 13, 2016 7

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time: November 13, 2016 8

Stephen B. Reynolds

Continued from page 2... The Book of Revelation cannot be adequately understood except against the historical background that occasioned its writing. Like Daniel and other apoca-lypses, it was composed as resistance literature to meet a crisis. The book itself suggests that the crisis was ruthless persecution of the early church by the Ro-man authorities; the harlot Babylon symbolizes pagan Rome, the city on seven hills (Rev 17:9). The book is, then, an exhortation and admonition to Christians of the first century to stand firm in the faith and to avoid compromise with paganism, despite the threat of adversity and martyrdom; they are to await patiently the fulfillment of God’s mighty promises. The triumph of God in the world of men and women remains a mystery, to be accepted in faith and longed for in hope. It is a tri-umph that unfolded in the history of Jesus of Nazareth and continues to unfold in the history of the individual Christian who follows the way of the cross, even, if necessary, to a martyr’s death. Though the perspective is eschatological—ultimate salvation and victory are said to take place at the end of the present age when Christ will come in glory at the parousia—the book presents the decisive struggle of Christ and his follow-ers against Satan and his cohorts as already over. Christ’s overwhelming defeat of the kingdom of Satan ushered in the everlasting reign of God (Rev 11:15; 12:10). Even the forces of evil unwittingly carry out the divine plan (Rev 17:17), for God is the sovereign Lord of history. The Book of Revelation had its origin in a time of crisis, but it remains valid and meaningful for Christians of all time. In the face of apparently insuperable evil, either from within or from without, all Christians are called to trust in Jesus’ prom-ise, “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). Those who remain steadfast in their faith and confidence in the risen Lord need have no fear. Suffering, persecution, even death by martyrdom, though remaining impenetra-ble mysteries of evil, do not comprise an absurd dead end. No matter what ad-versity or sacrifice Christians may endure, they will in the end triumph over Satan and his forces because of their fidelity to Christ the victor. This is the enduring message of the book; it is a message of hope and consolation and challenge for all who dare to believe. The author of the book calls himself John (Rev 1:1, 4, 9; 22:8), who because of his Christian faith has been exiled to the rocky island of Patmos, a Roman penal colony. Although he never claims to be John the apostle, whose name is at-tached to the fourth gospel, he was so identified by several of the early church Fathers, including Justin, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Cyprian, and Hippolytus. This identification, however, was denied by other Fathers, in-cluding Denis of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Cyril of Jerusalem, Gregory Nazianzen, and John Chrysostom. Indeed, vocabulary, grammar, and style make it doubtful that the book could have been put into its present form by the same person(s) responsible for the fourth gospel. Nevertheless, there are definite linguistic and theological affinities between the two books. The tone of the let-ters to the seven churches (Rev 1:4–3:22) is indicative of the great authority the author enjoyed over the Christian communities in Asia. It is possible, therefore, that he was a disciple of John the apostle, who is traditionally associated with that part of the world. The date of the book in its present form is probably near the end of the reign of Domitian (A.D. 81–96), a fierce persecutor of the Chris-tians.

Thanksgiving After Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mer-cy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salva-tion. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good.

May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impuls-es, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You.

And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and per-fect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, AMEN.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time: November 13, 2016 17

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 6646 Addicks-Satsuma Road Houston, Texas 77084-1520

St. Elizabeth of Hungary November 17 St. Elizabeth was born in Hungary in 1207, the daughter of Alexander II, King of Hungary. At the age of four she was sent for education to the court of the Land-grave of Thuringia, to whose infant son she was betrothed. As she grew in age, her piety also increased by leaps and bounds. In 1221, she married Louis of Thuringia and in spite of her position at court began to lead an austerely sim-ple life, practiced penance, and devoted herself to works of charity. Her husband was himself much inclined to religion and highly esteemed her vir-tue, encouraging her in her exemplary life. They had three children when trage-dy struck - Louis was killed while fighting with the Crusaders. After his death, Elizabeth left the court, made arrangements for the care of her children, and in 1228, renounced the world, becoming a tertiary of St. Francis. She built the Franciscan hospital at Marburg and devoted herself to the care of the sick until her death at the age of 24 in 1231. St. Elizabeth is the patron saint of bakers, countesses, death of children, falsely accused, the homeless, nursing services, tertiaries, widows, and young brides.
