the 2012 Catholic appeal

This weekend, we are asked to pledge our support for the 2012 Catholic Appeal. This annual effort directly supports the fifty ministries of the Church of Boston. This worthwhile effort is the most effective way for our parish to join in the Church’s universal work of caring for those among us who are in need. Please prayerfully consider how God is calling you to be the Good Samaritan through your support of the Catholic Appeal. For more informa-tion about the Catholic Appeal or to make a pledge to our parish campaign, please visit: www.BostonCatholicAppeal.org.

a catholic look at 'downton'

If you are among the many fans of the PBS British costume drama, Downton Abbey, you will enjoy lis-tening to America Magazine's March 5 podcast, "A Catholic Look at 'Downton.'" James Martin, S.J., and

Online Editor of America, Tim Reidy discuss the hidden themes of grace, suffering, love, forgiveness, and transformation in the PBS series. And they also discuss why the word "Abbey" is important. If, like Tim Reidy and Fr. Martin, Downton Abbey is your favorite show, you'll enjoy this twenty–six minute podcast with its exploration of several Lenten themes. www.americamagazine.org/content/podcast/podcast-index.cfm?series_id=1325

Friday night film series—"the Nun's story"

Join us in the Parish Pastoral Center this Friday evening at six–thirty for a showing of the classic film, The Nun's Story. This 1959 Warner

Brothers film starring Audrey Hepburn is based upon the 1956 novel of the same title by Kath-ryn Hulme, and tells the story of the life of Sister Luke (Hepburn), a young Belgian woman who decides to enter the convent and make the many sacrifices required by her choice. However, at the outset of World War II, she finds she cannot remain neutral in the face of the abject evil of Hitler's Germany.

The book was based upon the life of Marie Louise Habets, a Belgian nurse who spent time in the convent. A major portion of the film takes place in the Belgian Congo, where much of the film was shot.

Colleen Dewhurst made her feature film debut in the film. The Nun's Story was nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Actress in a Leading Role (Audrey Hepburn), Best Cin-ematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music Score, Best Motion Picture, Best Sound, and Best Screenplay—based on material from another medium.

The Nun's Story was a major box office success in its day and was considered, for a time, to be the most financially successful of Hepburn's films and the one the actress often cited as her favorite. We hope you'll join us!

pine street women's inn dinner

On Monday, March 12, the Macdonald, Roche and Cooney-Quigley families in the Faith Formation Program will cook and serve dinner at the Pine Street Women’s Inn. These three families will supply a hot entrée accompanied by potatoes, rice or pasta, a hot vegetable and a green salad. The Inn supplies the bread. The Saint Cecilia Food Group invites other pa-rishioners to donate desserts, especially home-made cookies and brownies, as well as fresh fruit—or perhaps you are able to make a finan-cial contribution to the dinner. We will collect the donations next Sunday, March 11 between the morning liturgies. Please look for the Faith Formation/Pine Street Women’s Inn poster and donation baskets in the narthex of the church. If any Faith Formation families would like to help cook and serve a meal at Pine Street Women’s Inn, please contact E. Jane Smith via e-mail at [email protected].

pastoral planning

The Archdiocesan Pastoral Planning Com-mission (APPC) has begun a series of twenty vicariate consultations with parish pastoral and finance council members to discuss pro-posals to strengthen parishes for the mission of evangelization in the Archdiocese. We ask parishioners to join the Commission’s work by prayer and by visiting the planning website for important information on the proposal and the Commission’s work to date at www.plan-ning2012.com. The APPC is asking pastors and their councils to conduct Town Hall meetings or other sessions over the next several weeks to discuss pastoral planning efforts in the Arch-diocese. Parishioners who wish to take a web survey on pastoral planning can find it at the www.planning2012.com website.

nativity spirit award dinner

As you may have seen recently in the bulletin, Saint Cecilia parishioners have begun volun-teering at Nativity Prep School in Jamaica Plain. Nativity is a tuition-free middle school dedicated to providing a quality education to boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston's inner-city neighborhoods. We would also like to support Nativity by put-ting together a Saint Cecilia table for their annual fundraiser, the Nativity Spirit Service Award Dinner. The event will be held at B.C. High School this Wednesday, March 7, with

cocktails at 6:00 and dinner at 6:45. Individual tickets are $150 each. If you are interested in the event, please contact Mark Lippolt at [email protected].

If you are an adult Catholic who has been bap-tized and received first communion but has not yet celebrated the sacrament of confirmation, this class is for you. There will be five classes held on Sunday afternoons from four o'clock to five–thirty, in the Parish Pastoral Center. The classes will begin today, Sunday, March 4 and will continue on March 11, March 18, March 25, and April 15. "Gen silent" Documentary

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 217:00 | THE GRANOFF MUSIC CENTER AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Mystic Valley Elder Services presents Gen Silent, an award–winning documentary about lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender elders in Massachusetts and the very specific chal-lenges they face. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender older people often face discrimi-nation, bullying, and abuse. Thousands are dying earlier than their straight counterparts because they are often isolated and afraid to ask for help. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at www.mves.org or (781) 324–7705. Seating is limited.
