5th Sunday of Easter May 19, 2019 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

It’s nearly a month since Easter Sunday, but there is a reason that we celebrate this event so long. The Resurrection changes every-thing. A whole new world has been opened up to us. No won-der God says, “Behold, I make

all things new” in the vision from the Reve-lation that we hear today. As we celebrate this liturgy today, let us thank and praise God for all ways in which our lives have been made new.

Last Sunday our second collection was for Catholic Charities. We collected $1,406.00. Thank you for your generosity.

Our Patron, St. Bernardine, is commemo-rated on May 20th. Traditionally we orga-nized a party and had a good social time. This year we have the renovation of Fearon Hall, so we can’t do it in this man-ner. On the other hand we don’t want to do nothing. So let me invite all for a simple cookie and coffee reception after 10:30 a.m. Mass this Sunday in the parish court-yard. It will be an occasion for many to see changes in that area, and maybe an opening of the courtyard for the Summer.

Week by week our capital project of reno-vation of Fearon Hall looks better and bet-ter. Do you remember round columns in the hall? You will not see them anymore. They were covered by square-shaped covers and in my opinion look much better.

This weekend we host Issam from “Star of Bethlehem Group.” Issam brings hand-crafted olive wood gifts from the Holy Land. The profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Every single thing we buy makes a difference. Please stop in the vesti-bule after Mass.

Let us pray for good weather in the rest of May which will allow us to enjoy the beau-ty of God’s creation even more.

God bless you, Fr. Stan

Lent and Easter are over but the St. Vin-cent de Paul Society continues working to try to help the poor and needy. The FOOD PANTRY is open every Saturday morning between 9 and 11 AM in the rectory basement. Right now some of the items needed are cereal, toi-let paper, canned fruit, and of course, cash. The SVDP Society supplies under-wear and socks for PADS at St. Mary of Celle Church and provides food for the homeless to the Little Free Food Pantry at the Forest Park Library twice a week. Lent was very busy, and the people of St. Bernardine were very generous. Thank you and God bless you!

HAND-CARVED OLIVE WOOD GIFTS FROM THE HOLY LAND

Proceeds benefit Catholic schools

in the Holy Land.

Did you know that there are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood? The recent clash-es in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Is-sam from “Star of Bethlehem Group” came to the United States with a mission to help those

families by selling their beautiful religious handcrafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Star of Bethlehem has been approved by many bishops and diocese of Jerusalem.

Please take a look at those beautiful artifacts

THIS WEEKEND

MISSIONARIES OF MERCY

Paul’s back! After last week’s “violent abuse,” oppo-nents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commit-ment; Revelation’s future “new heaven, new earth” should inspire our optimism. But Revelation’s present as-surance, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mer-cy.” Because Pope Francis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely de-pendent on our showing un-conditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and every-one young again, reawakened to life’s noblest virtues. Fit-tingly, in today’s Gospel Je-sus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

RESPECT LIFE

The US House is now voting on the Equality Act (HB 5). The Equality Act would expand the definition of the word sex in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include "gender identity" and "sexual orientation “as legally protected clas-ses.” Its sponsors “…support a progressive vision of religious freedom that respects pluralism and rejects the misuse of religion to discriminate.”

But what does this mean practically? The new federal law could punish anyone whose reli-gious belief includes a biblical understanding of marriage and biological sex. In other words, one could not even speak these beliefs without the risk of committing a hate crime. In practice, re-strooms and dressing rooms would become uni-sex; health care providers and professionals would be forced to perform gender transition pro-cedures (sex changes) and provide medical ser-vices (hormone therapy) that violate their moral and religious convictions; all adoption and foster care agencies will be forced to place children into same sex households and into homes of individu-als suffering from gender confusion; and college and professional sports stadiums would be re-quired to open their restrooms to either sex. And in fact, these scenarios have already played out in retail stores, bakeries, and public schools across America—but now they will be enforced with a much harsher ideological force bent on removing a traditional practicing Christian presence in the public square. As stated by Chai Feldblum, former com-missioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, “I'm having a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win... There can be a conflict between religious liberty and sexual liberty, but in almost all cases the sexual liberty should win because that's the only way that the dignity of gay people can be affirmed in any realistic manner.” Co-existence and mutual respect must give way to ideological conformity and a one-way affirmation. And so we seem to be traveling back in time to the outlaw of nascent Christianity. We may find ourselves very soon, like Peter before the Sanhedrin, choosing whether we will obey God or man.

ST. BERNARDINE YOUTH GROUP HOSTS COLLEGE INFORMATION

SEMINAR

On April 27, 2019, our St. Bernardine Youth Group sponsored a seminar conducted by Shatoya Harper, Youth Programs Coordinator for Chicago Lights Tutoring and Summer Day. She taught participants how to prepare for college, gain ad-mittance, finance their education and succeed in their educational endeavor. Father Stan invited all high school parishioners and their parents to at-tend. The fifteen participants are pictured above with Shatoya, who is seated second from the left, in the front row. Next to her is Kathy Capron-Jankun, our Youth Group Leader, whose vision made this successful endeavor possible.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, ob-stacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian house-hold, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differ-ences in many things, yet al-ways giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J. Around the Church PART IX

The Sanctuary – Side Altars

There is a tradition in Catholic churches that statues or altars for Mary are typically on the left in light of the fact that placed there, she is on Jesus’ right hand from “his point of view” — from the point of view of someone looking out from the sanctuary. St. Joseph’s presence on the right side is then seen in light of Mary’s privileged role. When the church was first built, there were many statues. There are no specific norms or rules regarding the placement of statues — the General Instruction of the Roman Missal only notes how, “care should be taken that their number not be increased indiscriminately, and that they be ar-ranged in proper order so as not to distract the faithful’s attention from the celebration itself. There should usually be only one image of any given Saint” (GIRM 318). Since then, these statues were removed, leaving only the ones of Mary (left side of sanctuary) and St. Joseph and St. Bernardine (right side of the sanctuary). In our church, symbols of Mary and Joseph are above each of the altars as well as on the front of the altars. The altars include statues of Mary and Joseph. During the marriage liturgy, many couples who have a devotion to Mary take a moment before the conclusion of the liturgy to offer prayers to Mary as they begin their life together. This is done since Mary is a wonderful model of how we are to live out our faith and trust in God. The statue of St. Bernardine on the right side by the St. Joseph Altar was donated in Loving Memory of Paul “Jack” Minogue by the Minogue Family.
