He had been abused and he seemed to hate almost anything that moved, but he was beautiful, the color of clouds and mist, light and shadow. We plied him with carrots and tried all the standard means of training. I spent hours in the ring and round pen, but his gait was stiff and when he cantered he tripped all over himself. I was worried about my stubborn, crazy-legged little stallion. As we left camp he moved out quickly in a nice ground covering trot. We rode for 30 miles like this until we came to a steep plateau. Snowy River is what they called it. We picked our way up the rocky slope. Some places I had to stand up in the stirrups and lean forward to help him up. When we took the last hop up over the side Habib and I stopped. It looked like we were on the top of the world. The land stretched out below to the horizon. I urged Habib forward with a gentle leg and he moved out picking up into a trot. Then all of a sudden I felt his gait shift. He threw up his head and trum- peted a loud whinny that shook me to my toes, bowed his head to the bit and began to move. As he moved I felt his whole body reaching forward in long strides. We glided across the rocky ground as though his feet were not touching the earth. I felt his joy in moving between earth and sky. When we reached the other side he plunged over the edge stepping into space, trusting that he would find solid ground. He carried me safely to second place in the race. I realized he had found what he had been created to do, and with this discovery, he experienced a joy his Creator had put in his heart. It was finding the sacred space where we step into God’s creation and understand our true value in His world and respond in joy. Each morning when we saddle up to ride with our Lord we are called to honor each beloved creature we encounter, man or beast, to help them find that space, that God created just for them, the place where essence and purpose beget joy. It is helping those around us remember we each have a destiny...a valued place in our Creator’s plan especially when the world has told us we are useless and life is meaningless. BACK IN THE SADDLE FOR ... A RALLY DAY ROUND-UP OF MINISTRIES AND GOOD FUN! Saddle up this Sunday, September 7, after the 10:30 Service

Come enjoy the fun….saddle up and ride the trail with Jesus at your side!

He is calling us to care for His herd until He returns- keep the rustlers away and protect the little ones when they stray.

There’s a saddle for every size at St. Andrew’s and a trail for each cowgirl or cowboy to find.

He wants us to guide His herd safely home and make sure our own hearts aren’t tempted to roam.

We’ll learn to ride tall in the saddle, that’s for sure, when we walk humbly with the Lord, do justice, love kindness and live by His Word..

I learned a lot growing up with horses...always close the gates behind you... never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction. I discovered heaven in a barn in the early morning, in the smell of sweet feed, alfalfa, and oiled leather...and I saw the wonder of life being born in a pasture.

But one of my most important lessons was taught to me by a little, gray Arab stal-lion named Habib which means little darling. He was anything but when we bought him. If I used spurs or a whip he would throw himself and me into the fence. There was no way we could get him in a show ring.

One weekend some friends invited us to an endurance race at the grasslands in Decatur. Arabs are known for their stamina. The race was 50 miles over rough terrain. He threw up his head and trum-peted a loud whinny that shook me to my toes, bowed his head to the bit and began to move.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY: Time to Rally 'Round for a New Program Year! By Judy Mayo

“Tall in the Saddle with Jesus!” Welcome to a new school year of curriculum and programming for our children! I believe all schools have started now, and a brand new year of learning, new challenges, and new opportunities await our children, whether in public or private schools, classical schools, applied learning centers, fine arts academies, home schools, or any combination thereof. There is always a sense of excitement in the early fall, with a whole new school year ahead.

The same is true at church. On Sunday, September 14, we will launch headlong into new fall programming for ALL ages… little tots, children, youth, and adults. Families can visit the various education and ministry tables on Rally Day, September 7, and hear about the new fall offerings. There are wonderful, exciting things appealing to all ages and interests, so ALL ABOARD for great learning, fellowship, and fun!

This summer at VBS, children learned how to “Saddle up with the Savior,” and stay on the trail with Jesus. Continuing that theme, and diving more deeply into it, the overall theme for Children’s Ministries for 2014-2015 will be “Tall in the Saddle with Jesus.” Children’s studies will focus on both the Old and New Testaments, with a few special studies directed to our beautiful 1928 Prayer Book and our 1940 Hymnal. In all these studies, we shall be emphasizing that, as we anchor our lives more and more closely to the life of our Lord — through prayer, study of God’s Word, obedience to the things of God, and fellowship with other Christians — we will stay “tall in the saddle with Jesus,” even as scary or challenging things confront us as we grow in years. The safest and most secure place to be, throughout our lives, is “in the saddle with Jesus.” He can make the “dips and bumps of life” less jarring and painful, because He is there with us in the saddle, experiencing them with us, and He will make the smooth, joyful times and “rides” of life even more wonderful.

Children’s biblical studies will continue with the “Dwell” children’s curriculum (a very conservative, biblically sound series), with a few units of the “Walk with Me” curriculum (same company, a complementary series) woven in

as well. As well as featuring colorful Bible studies, these curricula encourage teachers, parents, and families always to highlight the absolute sovereignty of Almighty God in His world, the amazing plan which He has for His creation, and some of the consequences of obedience and disobedience… while always emphasizing the free gift of GRACE offered and available to each of us.

In addition to our curricular studies, we will continue to offer enrichments such as arts and crafts, memory work incentives and Bible Olympics, a little music instruction, and biblical storytelling, as well as occasional modern skits with a biblical theme. Also, during seasons such as Advent and Lent, we will weave in several weeks of special topical themes and studies geared to the important, overarching themes of these very meaningful seasons. It is going to be wonderful year ahead!

Special Treats for Rally Day Please note what is in store for our children on Rally Day, September 7:

Sunday School for all ages will be offered as usual. Preschoolers will begin a month-long study of the Creation story (Genesis 1 and 2), with a couple of special, delightful enrichments in store. Since this is the final Sunday of our summer programming, elementary children (ages K through 5th grade) will enjoy an extra-special treat. Our good friend, Denise Mills, and her young adult daughter, Andi, will talk with the children about their month in Honduras this summer, and the mission work they did there in spreading the Good News of Jesus and sharing His love with some of the native people. Lively songs and some amazing photos will enhance their program. They also have a delightful “Mills Madness Bible Game” in store, and the children themselves will “make music” with an array of unique instruments.

Then later, during Rally Day itself, following the 10:30 service, Denise and Andi Mills will stay at church to do face painting, balloon sculptures, a little fun hand puppetry, and arts and crafts for the children, and there will also be lunch provided for them. In addition, the nursery will be open throughout Rally Day. So… a colorful, fun day is in store for the children on September 7!

Children’s Ministry Fall Luncheon Sunday, September 14, 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Honoring all Sunday School and VBS volunteers!

Come relax, enjoy lunch, and be honored! We will look back a little at VBS and talk about our program and activities for fall. YOUR input is valuable! Each one of you is a V.I.P. Please come join us! Lunch will be provided for children as well as adults.

Nursery provided for children 5 and under. Activities provided for children over 5.

Teacher Dedication Sunday, September 14 in the 10:30 service.
