Bloodborne Pathogens for Research and CampusActivities

Exposure to substances that could contain infectious agents is a commonhazard for laboratory and research workers. The Occupational Safety andHealth Administration (OSHA), recognizes that many employees come in

contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials during dailyduties and thus are potentially exposed to this occupational hazard. OSHA’sbloodborne pathogen standard has served as the basis for implementingpolicies and practices to minimize workers’ risk of exposure to BBP's,specifically to the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and theHuman Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This course will teach employees aboutthe hazards of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace and the basic controlsrequired under OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standard. This course will teachemployees about the hazards of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.Employees will learn how to identify major bloodborne diseases andsymptoms, how pathogens are transmitted and the basics of exposureprevention and incident response and cleanup. Campus Emergency Action PlansEmergency events can happen any place, any time. Many colleges anduniversities are required to have a written emergency action plan, and musttrain employees over that plan. These plans, however, can often be long anddetailed, covering many different types of emergencies, which can make itdifficult for employees to understand the context of various policies andprocedures, and how their individual role fits into the larger plan. Thisawareness-level course will provide a general overview of emergency actionplans and standard actions for employees to take during different types ofemergencies. The course includes information about different types of alarmsignals, common features of an emergency evacuation, and the propercircumstances and methods for using a portable fire extinguisher. This courseis designed for all employees on college and university campuses. While thiscourse addressed OSHA training requirements, there may be a site-specifictraining component required that must be fulfilled by an employer.
