It is so cold outside!

I know. It is absolutely frigid.

This weather can be very dangerous you know.

I know. Did you get a chance to read the article about how to be safe in the winter?

No, but can you tell me about it?

Sure. In a nutshell, it discussed hypothermia and frostbite. Both of these conditions are severe and can lead to amputation or even death!

No. They are similar, but there are some differences. Frostbite is caused by one our limbs becoming frozen. If the frostbite is severe enough, the affected body part may have to be amputated.

Frostbite and hypothermia are the same condition. Are they not?

No Kidding! Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops too low.

This can lead to death?

Yes. Hypothermia can lead to death.

I love winter, but I can see we must be mindful of the dangers of bitterly cold weather.

Right. The article stressed the importance of keeping dry while outside. Keeping dry will go a long way towards keeping us comfortable and safe in winter.

That makes sense. The other day I went for a walk in very deep snow and my feet got soaked. My feet felt numb and my whole body felt chilled.

Now another consideration is the wind chill. This simply means that a windy day in the winter will usually feel considerably cold than a calm day.I know that a windy day can make -10c feel bitterly cold.

You really need to read the article. I’m going to quickly run home quickly and get it for you.

Thanks a lot!

No prob! I’ll be right back.
