We are looking to cover more streets in the next few months.

WE CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT PEOPLE USE THEIR DEADBOLTLOCKS AND ENCOURAGE THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES TO DO SO.

THEFT FROM BICYCLE SAFESWe have noticed a recent spate of bicycles being stolen from storage safes, like the onepictured.

Storing your bike securely, out of sight is a good crimeprevention method and storage solution, however wewould encourage owners to ensure they use strongpadlocks to secure them.

Thieves are known to use various methods to tamper with locks, so please ensure you use strong padlocks, which are designed to prevent tampering such asclosed shackle padlocks

These locks are available at various bike shops andDIY stores .

Tackling Drugs and Alcohol Misuse/ Disorder In conjunction with Noel Park Ward officers we are now actively using powers under TheViolent Crime Reduction Act 2006.Anyone who's presence in a locality is likely to cause or contribute to alcohol related crime or disorder can be served with a notice instructing them to leave an area for a period of up to 48hours. If they return without good excuse they can be arrested. We will keep a list of who has been issued with these orders so that other officers will be ableto enforce the notice. We have noticed an immediate improvement from issuing these notices and believe that withcontinued enforcement the message will be driven home and street drinkers will choose not tovisit the area.

Robbery - Personal PropertyWe continued to conduct regular proactive patrols to deter offenders. On a rotational basis wewill patrol Green Lanes, Wightman Road and the Harringay Passage as three distinct microbeats. This will automatically encompass the Ladder streets and any identify people actingsuspiciously there.

Disabled Badge MisuseWe conducted a disabled parking badge misuse operation and seized four badges. Thesewere returned to the issuing authorities that will now be in a position to prosecute.

Haringey Council are keen that those committing these offences face prosecution and we arekeen to support this approach by, where possible, charging offenders and sending them beforethe courts. We will be conducting proactive operations targeting Disabled Badge Misuse on a regular basis.

    Neighbourhood Watch Drive

We are looking to increase the number of active Neighbourhood watches we have on theward. There are currently 18 watches but some are more current than others. We have 30 discernable streets/neighbourhoods on the ward as well as Wightman Road andGreen Lanes itself.Ideally we would like to have a watch for each of these neighbourhoods and possibly two or three for Wightman Road but this is unlikely to happen and we may have to combine somestreets and neighbourhoods together. If you want more information on these watches or are interested in setting one up or gettinginvolved with your local watch please contact us.

Using a mobile phone whilst driving

We will actively target drivers using their mobile phones. August willbe the one-month Verbal Warning amnesty after which we willissue fixed penalty notices

The facts All phone calls distract from driving.

Research demonstrates that reaction times for drivers using ahandheld phone are 30 per cent worse than for driving under theinfluence of alcohol at the legal limit.

Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving meansyou are four times more likely to crash.

It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving. The penalty is 60and 3 penalty points. If the case goes to court, it's a maximum fine of 1,000 (2,500 if drivinga bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle), discretionary disqualification and 3 points.

Your insurance costs could also go up.

If you reach 6 points within 2 years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked and youwill need to re-sit your test to get your licence back.

You can also be prosecuted for using a handsfree phone or similar device if you are distractedand not in proper control of the vehicle. The same penalties apply.

Employers could also be prosecuted if employees are distracted because they require them touse their mobile phones while driving.

We recommend that drivers turn off their mobile phones when they get into their car andbefore they start to drive to avoid being distracted. This will prevent them receiving calls whenthey are driving and they can pull over, turn off the engine and make calls in a safe manner.

Callers should hang up too Callers also play an important role. If you ring someone on their mobile phone who turns out tobe driving when they answer, say you'll call them later and hang up.

BetWatchPolice and betting shops are working together to install a radio system that will link them alltogether.Should they have problems with customers they can inform each other. This will be of particular importance where a disorderly or abusive customer is told to leave the premises andall other stores will be made aware to ensure that person is unable to cause problemselsewhere. It will also help police to locate these people should they need to be spoken to as they movefrom book-keeper to book-keeper.We will put agreed protocols in place controlling their use and agreed responses.

    Community Announcement

On Sunday 20 th September 2009 the Green Lanes Festival will take place. Green Lanes will beclosed to traffic in both directions from 7am in the morning between Endymion Road and StAnns Road. The adjoining roads will also be closed at their junctions with Green Lanes. There will be music stages, stalls, childrens play areas and many other attractions.Further details will be published by the organisers in due course.

Take care in properly securing your vehicles and do not leave anything visible inside that couldattract a thief.
