Safe Operation of Meat Slicers

Slicing SafelyChances are, if you specialize in deli or other intricately cut meats, your meat cutting operation

includes some form of slicer. While a necessary tool in your processing line, we all have heard the stories of someone losing a finger in a slicing machine – a cost no one, including

the company, wants to incur.

Injuries happen, especially when moving blades are in the picture. You can minimize the risk of injury and keep your employees safe around meat slicers by following these meat slicer safety tips.

Read themanual

Read through the equipment manual thoroughly before turning on or operating the meat slicer.

#1

Wear cut resistant gloves

Wear cut resistant gloves when operating or cleaning the meat slicer. They will protect your hands from injuring yourself if you accidentally hit the slicer blade.

#2

Secure themeat properly

When getting ready to slice, make sure to secure the meat properly so it won’t slip or fall out during cutting. Failing to secure the meat will likely cause the product to buck and fall out of the machine.

#3

Don’t reach in.Ever.

Never reach in to stabilize meat or unclog the slicer. Ever. All it takes is for one slip to lose a finger. If the slicer gets clogged or the meat becomes unstable, shut off the machine and follow safety

protocols to clean out the slicer or stabilize the meat.

#4

Always use tampers

Slicers come equipped with tampers or pushers for a reason. Use them. Accidents happen when you try to use your hands to push food product into place.

#5

Never reach acrossthe blade

Never reach across the slicing blade, especially when it’s in operation. One slip, one miscalculation on the height of your arm, and you’ll be injured for sure. Your best bet is to walk around

to the other side of the machine.

#6

Turn off before cleaning

Turn off, unplug, follow tag out procedures, and set the blade adjustment to zero before attempting to clean the slicer. Accidentally pushing the power budget, or a simple power surge, could result in the

machine firing up and causing you a massive injury.

#7

Use lockingfeatures

Always use locking features to keep the blade in place when the slicer is not in use.
