2“Transforming Girls Into Women of Faith and Vision in the Franciscan Tradition”

Dear RHS friends,

Glorious spring! We have made it through another cold, long winter! I am grateful to live in Michigan where we can experience the four beautiful seasons. It makes me more grateful to God for the warmth and sunshine when it finally arrives.

Springtime also means the end of another productive school year! We

underwent our first official year as a school campus with wireless internet accessibility. With anything new, it has been a year of learning and growing. Students were allowed to bring in any device that had the capability to access the internet. Teachers have been diligently improving their skills on the iPad and have been encouraged to integrate technology into their every day instruction as way of increasing student achievement and keeping students engaged in the lessons. Staff and students alike, have enjoyed the ability to have this knowledge at their fingertips this year. As a school, we are researching devices that we believe will be the most viable for all students to have in school. With the Class of 2020, all students will be asked to have the same device to streamline the learning and effectiveness of the tool in the classroom. It is an exciting time to be a member of the Regina Community!

As we close on another school year, we say goodbye to an amazing group of 110 young women who have called Regina home for the last four years. Although goodbye is never easy, these graduates will now hold a special place in the hearts of the Regina family as they venture out on a new journey, leaving behind their own unique mark, taking with them fond memories, and beginning a new chapter of their lives. They walked into Regina High School as young girls and are now leaving as young women of faith and vision. Many have played a part in their successes and we all should be proud of them and their many, many accomplishments! Parents have made a sacrifice to give their daughters a gift that will last a lifetime…the gift of Catholic education. The faculty and staff have worked diligently every day to ensure these students receive the very highest quality of academic instruction while continuing to cultivate their hearts and souls in the Franciscan Tradition.

Thank you, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends of Regina High School for your continued support of our mission and vision! We strive to continue to prepare, empower, and encourage the next generation of young women who will make a difference in the world!

God Bless and Keep You All in His Loving Arms,

Ann E. Diamond ‘94, Principal

From the Principal

From the PresidentDear Graduates of the Class of 2015,

The fall of 2011 brought you to Regina High School for just a brief time of grace…I call it “four short years!” During that time your parents entrusted us with the obligation of providing you with a value-centered education while at the same time grounding you firmly in the important values of life: faith, charity, justice, mercy, compassion, prayer, wisdom,

and integrity. We recognized your potential. We planted the seeds and prayed that they would grow. We watered the seeds planted by your parents. We knew that you held future promise so we laid foundations that needed further development. We encouraged growth that could produce effects beyond imagination. Our goal was to provide you with roots and wings which would then be transformed in you, as we say in our motto, to women of faith and vision.

It seems that the more we know, the more complicated life becomes. You will be faced with challenges from the time you leave the

relatively simple life of a student where everything has been provided for you into a life which plunges you into the adult world. Take careful consideration in the choice of a career remembering that there is no easy life ahead, no easy job to be found, no easy way to do something worthwhile, no easy way to real happiness.

You are entering a world of responsibility different from the one you enjoyed in the past. Enter that world with Faith in God and let your vision, values, and ideals be an integral part of your actions, your words, your very existence in today’s technology led world. We are prepared to let you go and grow in whatever direction you choose because we sincerely believe that Regina High School has prepared and provided you with the tools you need for your future.

I believe that there is no one in the world quite like you…no one can do what you can do…no one can think, act, and be you. Continue to grow because in life, there is so much more that needs to be accomplished. Develop your gifts and talents, use them wisely, have Faith in God and allow His grace to enter and do the rest!

God’s blessings and Mary’s guidance be with you ALWAYS!

Sister Mary Leanne, SSJ-TOSF President

4“Transforming Girls Into Women of Faith and Vision in the Franciscan Tradition”

From Mariah Bono, Senior Class President

From Sarah Hirschmann, Student Council PresidentMy dearest Jaguars,

It is so crazy to think that our four years here have flown by so fast. It feels like the day that we walked in those doors with our polos tucked in and our bodies covered in stickers was just yesterday. Each and every one of us has grown so much since that day, both individually and as a class. This may end one chapter of our lives, but

it is also the start of a new one. As of May 21, 2015, we will have a blank page to start; to fill with new memories, new friends, and new experiences. As our class motto says: “Our paths may change as life goes along, but the bonds between us remain ever strong.” In a few short months, all 110 of us will be spread all over the state, if not all over the country. No matter where our lives take us, I have the utmost confidence that we will succeed in whatever we do. Always remember to stay true to yourself and know that you have 109 sisters.

I would just like to take the time to say how incredibly blessed I am to have spent the best four years of my life with you all. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished and how close we have gotten. I cannot bring myself to say goodbye just yet, my sisters. I love you all so very much.

God Bless,

Mariah Bono

Ever since we were little, adults would ask us, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” We would respond with big dreams like police officers, superheroes, or professional athletes. Over the years we have learned what these jobs actually consist of and narrowed our dreams down to more realistic

ideas. This question has now turned into, “What are you majoring in?” The answers are more like teaching, nursing, or engineering. Adults are no longer asking us what our dreams are, but they are asking us what we are going to do. This is a huge step because our lives aren’t just about dreaming about the future anymore—the future is right now, and it’s our time to act.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Regina has not only taught me to dream big but to carry through with my dreams. Regina has taught me that I can do anything. It has given me friends that became my family and that will be by my side for the rest of my life. These people are my support system, which lets me know that even though I don’t always believe in myself, there are people who do.

Adults are no longer asking us what we want to be when we grow up because we are the adults now. It’s our turn to help shape other people’s lives. It’s our turn to get out into the world and learn, live, and actually make a difference. We will soon be on our own, making decisions that will shape the rest of our lives…but I’m not scared. I’m ready.

Sincerely,

Sarah Hirschmann

Regina won 3-1 over Livonia Ladywood in the Catholic High School League A-B championship May 18 at the University of Detroit Mercy. This win gave Regina their first Catholic High School League title since 2005.

Regina has won five state titles, all while the school was located in Harper Woods. The championships came in 1989, along with four straight from 2004-07.

Congratulations to Ms. Laffey and the entire Regina Varsity Softball Team!

Alumnae Mass and BrunchOn March 22, 2015, Regina High School hosted its annual Alumnae Mass and Brunch. This year’s special honoree was long-time coach and Athletic Director, Diane Laffey. About 300 guests were in attendance to celebrate in Regina’s Chapel, followed by a brunch.

An article published in the Michigan Catholic states: “By nature, she’s quiet, unassuming. However, she had no choice but to accept the invitation from the Regina High School Alumnae Association, who used the occasion of its annual Mass and brunch to pay tribute to Laffey for her 45 years of dedicated service to Regina.”

Monsignor Ricardo Bass of St. Hubert Parish in Harrison Township praised her as “a role model” and “mentor” while former students, athletes, coaches and parents came to celebrate the day with Laffey.

Before the brunch, Laffey was called on stage by Rosemary Wagner, current RHS teacher and a Class of 2004 alumna who was also second baseman on the Saddlelites 2004 Class A state championship team. Wagner had many reasons why Laffey should be praised: “She’s synonymous with Regina. She makes others feel special. She leaves a legacy of hard work and dignity. She’s an inspiration to thousands.”

Turning a Blank Canvas into a Beautiful Butterfly

Save the DatesSoon, some of the unique designs created by Regina’s art students will be “on display” as they participate in a program called “GP Benches” to benefit the Grosse Pointe Chamber Foundation. Artists were sought to creatively garnish a bench in the motif of a butterfly made out of wood. Regina art teacher, Susan Capizzo, submitted designs for benches in February as part of the selection process. Sponsors chose designs from two Regina art students, Mariah Bono and Mary Rochon, both from the Class of 2015.

The first bench titled “True Beauty” will be placed on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. The second bench features a rainbow of colors with the saying, “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a beautiful butterfly”, and will be displayed on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe Park. A plaque will be placed on each bench with the sponsor’s name, artist’s name, and the name of the bench design.

At the conclusion of this program, the decorated butterfly benches will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Grosse Pointe Chamber Foundation.

Next Steps: College, Career and YouOn April 22nd, Regina hosted their first “Next Steps: College, Career and You”. This event was offered for Regina freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, and focused on college and career planning with grade appropriate activities.

The purpose of the event was to:

• Focus on the next steps each student should take to prepare for college and career investigation and planning.

• Assist each student to take another step on the path of self-discovery.

• Educate all students in the various topics presented such as responsible citizenship on social media, self care and stress reduction, summer opportunities, etc.

On hand for the day was a therapist for the stress reduction session, an outreach coordinator to talk about summer opportunities, and a STEM educator from Wayne State. In addition, Deputy Doug Rivers, a representative from the Macomb County Sheriff ’s Department, spoke with freshmen about internet safety and social media issues.

Five alumnae from the Class of 2009 were invited as guest speakers for the event. Ali Messina, Kelsey Meier, Christina Pauken, Maria Raffoul, and Melissa Raffoul came back to Regina to share their experiences and to answer questions by current Regina students!

“When I was asked to come back and speak at Regina, I was excited but also nervous. Regina allowed me to grow into the strong, independent young woman I am today. I hoped that my story and advice would help some of the students in their development through college and into a career. I wanted to remind these girls that you are not your failures or rejections. You are not defined by the school that rejected you or the job you couldn’t get; you are, however, your passions, your convictions, and the company you keep.”

-Kelsey Meier, Class of 2009

“My time at Regina allowed me to develop into a strong, confident, and intelligent woman. These traits proved not only to be invaluable during my college years but continue to propel me forward in my career today. Every teenage girl deserves the opportunity to find her strengths, and Regina offers that opportunity.”

-Christina Pauken, Class of 2009

“I was a little nervous to talk to the junior class because I was so unsure of what I was going to say. The first thing I could think about was how set I was on a career path in high school. So, I wanted to make sure the girls understood that it is okay to change your mind. I was set on being a Pediatrician for my whole life, but when I got to college, I decided Nursing was the better route for me. Regina allowed me to be myself and feel comfortable enough with my expectations to explore many different options once I went on to MSU. It was so fun to talk about this to the class. I hope the current Regina students will feel as though they can reach out to me with any questions or for any advice. My door is open.”

-Maria Raffoul, Class of 2009

“I was so excited when the staff asked me to come back and compile a panel of women I graduated with to talk to the Junior class. At first, I thought it was strange, because I feel like I just graduated from Regina. What advice could I possibly have to offer? However, when forced to reflect on my time at Regina, wonderful memories came back, and I was extremely excited to share my experiences with the next generation of Saddlelites! I hope that every girl entering into Regina will understand just how much the school helps to transition each one into a beautiful, intelligent woman; and, hopefully, they now understand that Regina is for life, and every alumna will be there to support them, be a role model for them, and answer any questions for them at a moment’s notice.”

-Melissa Raffoul, Class of 2009

“I really enjoyed getting to come back and share how much Regina helped me to be confident in myself and to really focus on what is important to me and to follow my own path.”

-Ali Messina, Class of 2009
