Oh ye’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road,

And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye,But me and my true love will never meet againOn the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

’Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,Where in purple hue the Highland hills we viewAnd the moon coming out in the gloaming.Oh ye’ll take the high road…

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring,And in sunshine the waters lie sleeping,But my broken heart, it kens nae second springThough the waeful mae cease frae their greeting.

Oh ye’ll take the high road…

Shenandoah8 O Shenandoah, I long to see you,

Away, you rolling river.O Shenandoah, I long to see you,Away, we’re bound away’Cross the wide Missouri.

O Shenandoah, I love your daughter.I’ve crossed the rolling water.O Shenandoah, I love your daughter.Away…

O Shenandoah, I’m bound to leave you,O Shenandoah, I’ll not deceive you.O Shenandoah, I’m bound to leave you.Away…

Clementine9 In a cavern, in a canyon,

Excavating for a mineDwelt a miner, forty-niner,And his daughter, Clementine.Oh my darling, oh my darling,Oh my darling Clementine,Thou art lost and gone forever,Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Light she was and like a fairyAnd her shoes were number nine.Herring boxes without topsesSandals were for Clementine.Oh my darling…

Ruby lips above the waterBlowing bubbles soft and fine.Alas for me, I was no swimmer,So I lost my Clementine. How I missed her, how I missed her,How I missed my Clementine! But I kissed her little sisterAnd forgot my Clementine.

Shearer’s Song0 Out on the board, the old shearer stands,

Grasping his shears in his thin bony hands.Fixed is his gaze on a bare-bellied yoe.Glory if he gets her, won’t he make the ringer go?

Click go the shears, boys, click, click, click.Wide is his blow and his hands move quick. The ringer looks around and is beaten by a blowAnd curses the old snagger with the bare-bellied yoe.

The Road to Gundagai! There’s a scene that lingers on my memory

With an old bush house and friends I’d like to see. That’s where I am yearningJust to be returningAlong the road to Gundagai. There’s a track winding backTo an old-fashioned shackAlong the road to Gundagai,Where the blue gums are growing,The Murrumbidgee’s flowingBeneath the summer sky,Where my daddy and mummy Are waiting for me

Now is the Hour@ Now is the hour for me to say goodbye.

Soon I’ll be sailing far across the sea. While I’m away, oh please remember me.When I return, I’ll find you waiting here.

THE VIENNA BOYS’ CHOIRThe international reputation of the Vienna Boys’ Choir is based not only on the outstanding choralstandard that gives it its special rank among the choirs of Europe, but also on the musical and technical proficiency of its superbly trained members as soloists.

The history of the choir goes back over 500 years to 1498, when Maximilian I founded theHofmusikkapelle to which the choir belonged. Many distinguished Viennese musicians began theircareers as members of this choir. One of the first choristers, Ludwig Senfl, later rose to beHofkapellmeister. The most famous chorister was probably Franz Schubert, who became a member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir in 1808. His successor as soprano soloist was Georg Hellmesberger. Other famous members were Carl Zeller, Hans Richter, Felix Mottl and Clemens Kraus.

Until 1918 the choristers’ chief function was the musical adornment of the services of the ImperialChapel. After the Austrian monarchy came to an end the choir was re-established by Josef Schnitt, inorder to introduce new life to the Hofmusikkapelle. After the First World War the choir started to givepublic concerts, at first in Austria only but later elsewhere also. Another new start had to be made after the Second World War. A new boarding school was set up. This is housed in the 16th-centuryAugarten Palace and provides the boys with a solid musical education. There are about 150 boysbetween the ages of 10 and 12, divided into four choirs. Each choir in turn makes an annual tour lasting about three months, visiting mainly Switzerland, Germany, Spain, the Benelux countries, theUnited Kingdom and Scandinavia. Since 1926, however, the choirs have also made frequent visits toNorth America, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Latin America.

The most prominent directors after the Second World War have been Ferdinand Grossmann and HansGillesberger. They were followed by Uwe Christian Harrer and, since 1991, Peter Marschik.

The comprehensive repertoire of the Vienna Boys’ Choir extends from Renaissance motets andmadrigals to Romantic choral works, both sacred and secular, 20th-century compositions and folksongs. Special attention is given to contemporary Austrian composers.
