To write one’s will upon the human heart requires a level of intimacy not often seen. In fact,

it recalls God’s intimacy with the first human. God blew the breath of life into him, then cast into him a deep sleep so that God could reach inside and remove a rib to create a partner for him. The intimacy revealed in Genesis and renewed in Jeremiah reaches its fullest expression in Jesus, the divine made flesh, who shared fully in our humanity. How fortunate we are that in baptism we receive the intimacy that is Christ within us.

Again and again the Chosen People turned away from God, repeatedly breaking the covenant the Lord made with them. Jeremiah’s promise of a new covenant, an internalized covenant that cannot be lost, a covenant so ingrained that anyone who sees them and knows their cha-racter will know the Lord, is tantamount to offering new life. Jesus, the new covenant, offers us the promise of eternal life, new life indeed.

Jesus spoke often of seeds. He compared heaven to a tiny mustard seed, growing into a huge plant. One sower sowed seed indiscriminately, some falling on rich soil and bearing fruit a hundredfold. Another sower saw their work threatened by the devil sowing weeds. Faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. Today that grain of wheat gave its life to produce much fruit. Jesus is the sower. Always he sows the seeds of faith, the seeds of the kingdom, the seed that is his very life so that they will bear as much rich fruit as the world can sustain. The Christ who is in us, with his mission imprinted upon our hearts, needs us to be the sowers now.

Escribir la voluntad de uno mismo sobre el corazón humano requiere un nivel de intimidad raramente visto. Es más, esto

nos recuerda la intimidad de Dios con el primer ser humano. Dios sopló su aliento sobre él e hizo que cayera en un profun-do sueño a fin de sacarle una costilla y crearle una compañera. La intimidad revelada en el Génesis y renovada en Jeremías llega a su máxima expresión en Jesús, la divinidad hecha carne, que compartió totalmente nuestra humanidad. Qué afortu-nados somos, pues en el Bautismo recibimos esa intimidad que es Cristo en nosotros.

Una y otra vez el pueblo escogido se aleja de Dios rompiendo repetidamente la alianza que el Señor había hecho con ellos. La promesa de Jeremías de una alianza nueva, una alianza interiorizada, que no puede perderse; una alianza tan arraigada en el pueblo, que cualquiera que los vea conocerá su carácter y conocerá al Señor, es una alianza que equivale a ofrecer una vida nueva.

Jesús habló con frecuencia acerca de las semillas. Comparó el cielo a una diminuta semilla de mostaza, que llegaría a ser un arbusto enorme. Un sembrador sembró semillas imprecisamente, algunas cayeron en terreno fértil y rindieron fruto del ciento por uno. Otro sembrador vio su trabajo amenaza-do por la cizaña que sembraba el diablo. La fe del tamaño de una semilla de mostaza pue-de mover montañas. Hoy ese grano de trigo dio su vida para rendir mucho fruto. Jesús es el sembrador, que siembra siempre las semillas de la fe, las semillas del Reino, la semilla que es su propia vida, para que dé tanto fruto como el mundo pueda sostener. El Cristo que vive en nosotros, con su misión grabada en nuestro corazón, necesita que ahora sea-mos los sembradores.
