President’s Message

Hello Scenic Acres Community members. I trust that you have

all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your Families, as well as a fright-filled Halloween that had you trick-or-treating until your candy bags overflowed.

On a safety note, it is that time where the snow could begin flying any day so please remember to prepare your vehicles by checking tires, batteries, block heaters and liquids so that you do not get caught unprepared and endanger yourself or those around you. Also ensure that you are ready to deal with snow on your driveway and particularly the sidewalks, to keep our community members safe (and the bylaws officers away).

Hockey season is here once again, with evaluations completed and teams already busy playing seeding games. Crowchild Hockey Association (CHA) player numbers have continued to decline. This year only 473 players registered, which is off from peak capacity by about 170 players that can comfortably operate out of the Crowchild Twin Arena’s.

Since only children from Scenic Acres, Silver Springs and Varsity are eligible to play hockey with our Association, the Board of CHA is working hard to understand what we can do to maintain or grow the enrolment numbers, considering that we have communities with aging or static demographics. All three communities will work actively with the C.H.A. Board to look at this challenge, as we have a vested interest to ensure that the arena stays open and well utilized.

So if you have children that are interested in hockey but have not enrolled them for any number of reasons (or fears), please contact any one of the CHA Board members to help you filter the facts from the fiction or urban legends. Contact information can be found at www.crowchildhockey.org.

If anyone has an interest in overseeing the development and maintenance of our outdoor facilities, please contact our secretary Michelle Parkkari at 403-239-9094. If you would like to get involved with SACA in another capacity or have any ideas or feedback please feel free to contact me at 403-803-5339.

Respectfully submitted,Terry MartinPresident, SACA

Community Drum CircleComing to Scenic Acres – Saturday November 6!

What’s been happening? For 9 months, groups of diverse people – men and women, young and old, multicultural – have been gathering every second Saturday afternoon at Ranchlands Community Centre for Community Drum Circles, where they create in-the-moment recreational music in a fun, supportive, safe environment (20 to 40 each time).A wonderful community of people has been forming, with many new people coming to each drum circle, which is fantastic!

Why Drumming?“In today’s stressful world people need community; safe places where they can go to get out of the rat race, to be still, unwind and reinvigorate their tired bodies, minds and souls. We need a way to un-clutch from stress and negativity in our daily lives that is powerful, fast and that works! People also need to have FUN!”- Judy Atkinson, Professional Drum Circle Facilitator (owner of Circles of Rhythm)

Triple ATriple A – the Alliance for Active Aging for adults 55+ launched its fall programming in September and we are adding to them all the time. Some of the fall programs are ones we’ve run in the past and have brought back again this year because of their success. Others we’ve introduced this year. Some have had a slow start but hopefully, you will try a drop in class and see if you might enjoy them. We are extremely excited about starting up Triple A’s Red Hat Chapter. This group is for ladies only. If you are not familiar with the Red Hat Society, it was formed in 1998 by a Sue Ellen Cooper in the US. She was inspired by a poem called Warnings. “The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

Sue Ellen Cooper, Queen Mother

Those who are interested in finding out more should contact the Scenic Acres Community Association [email protected] or 403-547-9589. Lady Helen the Queen Mother from the Queen’s Council of the Calgary Chapters is willing to help get things started. Currently over 40 Chapters are in Calgary. Triple A’s Red Hat chapter will add to this organization. Note, you must also be a member of Triple A in order to join the Triple A Red Hat chapter.

Community Programs for Older Adults

For the gentlemen out there, we’d also like to invite you let us know if you’d like to see a lunch club or a breakfast going. It’s an opportunity for you to make some new friends, get out to some new places, and have a few laughs with some new people.

Triple A membership is still growing and we hope to get everyone onto an email list. We hope to be able to contact you via email and sent out our Triple A newsletter which provides up to date information about events, programming, member profiles, and anything else you might be interested in. We also would like some volunteers to help us with programming ideas, the social club, and the newsletter.

For more information about volunteering, please contact our project coordinator at [email protected], if you want

program or Triple A membership information call any of the 6 member communities: Dalhousie, Edgemont, Montgomery, Scenic Acres, Silver Spring, and Varsity. You automatically become a member of Triple A if you are 55+ when you buy a membership at any one of the above communities and this membership allows you to register for any of the programs that are offered by Triple A at any or all of the 6 communities. It also gives you the member rate for the programs.

If you are currently not a member join today and start coming out to the events, programs, lunches etc. Anyone in the city is welcome to come out and enjoy our events and programs and buy a membership. Bring a friend and you can both join. Memberships run anywhere from $10 and up depending on which community you contact. See you at the next event.

Our SchoolsW.O.Mitchell

This past month and again in November many students at our school have had or will have the opportunity to attend school in an alternate setting. Our grade 1/2 classes had a fieldtrip to the Zoo where they experienced many different types of communities. Our grade six classes had a wonderful time at COP School where they experienced Canada Olympic Park’s natural setting, state-of-the-art sport facilities and on-site experts. Our Grade 5 classes will both be spending some time at the Glenbow Museum to explore the rich collection of art and artifacts and to experience the past, and ponder the future.

In addition to great happenings outside of our building our students were fortunate enough to have Georgia Graham an Alberta author and illustrator come to our school and share many books that she has written and illustrated. Her amazing talent was both motivating and inspiring for students and staff.

Our Naturalization Project is moving forward and we are looking for anyone from our communities that would like to assist in anyway or who would like to make a donation to this project to please call the school at 403 777-6100. We look forward to getting this project up and running so we can begin to give back to the community at large.

Monsignor E. L. Doyle

Once again we have had a busy October here at Monsignor Doyle School. On Friday, October 8th Monsignor Doyle School hosted a Thanksgiving Celebration Liturgy where the school community showed our gratitude for all we have. Thank you to Miss Poole and Mrs. Lesar-Santos and their classes who organized the liturgy.

In conjunction with the Thanksgiving celebration the school community was involved in a food drive of non-perishable food items that were collected and donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Peter’s Parish. It was heartwarming to see all the food items collected for those in need. Thank you to all families who donated items. Thank you to Mrs. Sue Barazzutti, the parish liaison for coordinating this food drive.

On October 21st and 22nd photographers from Platinum Photography were in our school where they conducted a Family Photo evening on Thursday and Friday as well as taking school photos during the day on Friday. It was great to see all the wonderful smiles for the camera!

As an exemplary middle school, we believe that students should be given experiences to explore, and expand on the knowledge and skills they learn in the classroom. In the month of October this belief led to some amazing experiences. Students attended a week-long experience at Zoo School. Some students participated in Circle of Nations presentations, hiking trips to Yamnuska, and a beginner band camp. Other students have explored the Weaselhead, participated in Wordfest, or heard presentations from Enmax, CPAWS, Vicky Chase and the Humane Society.

Our athletes are gearing up for volleyball playoffs, have completed the soccer and cross-country running seasons, and have begun training with the wrestling team. We also have eighty students involved in journalism and photography for our yearbook, and one hundred students making our School an exciting place to be through their work with the Coyote Spirit Club.

Our students look forward to sharing their learning with parents on November 9th and 10th during student-led conferences. We also invite parents and the community to join our Remembrance Day service on November 9th.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Romas, Marble Slab Ice Cream, MacDonalds, 7-11, YMCA, Crowfoot Ciniplex, and Mucho Burrito for providing prizes for our Student Union Ticket Pack fundraiser. There support is greatly appreciated.

Our Schools

St. Sylvester

Scenic Acres

Greetings from the staff and students of École St. Sylvester School. October was a busy month that found the kids back into the swing of things. Walking Wednesday’s and the walking school bus continued this month and has been a great success. The winter clothing collection to support Jacket Racket also started this month.

Field trips began this month and school pictures were also on the calendar. As well, swimming lessons started for some, others took part in curling, information on cyber-bullying was shared with the Division II students, and the school took part in a Woolmine workshop. Thanksgiving was also celebrated this month with a wonderful celebration liturgy.

Our School will accept kindergarten registrations for both English and French kindergarten for 2011/2012. A Baptismal certificate is expected, however if you are not Catholic, please call the school and talk to the office staff (403-500-2063). Feel free to visit our school web site at www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/stsylvester to learn more about our school. École St. Sylvester School is a place where caring, respect, responsibility, trust, and family are taught and lived!

Scenic Acres School has been busy with our fall startup. There have been many exciting events that have occurred over the last month. Our Terry Fox Run and family picnic was a great success, with many families coming out to enjoy a picnic lunch and partake in the Terry Fox Run. Scenic Acres School community raised $549.98 to this great cause. A big warm thank you to all who contributed.

Our school population consists of 152 students Kindergarten to grade 4. For the 2010-2011 school year we have a morning and afternoon Kindergarten class, 3 - grade 1/2 classrooms and 3 - grade 3/4 classrooms. This move to multi-aged classrooms is a shift in organization allowing for teams of teachers to support the learning needs of the students assigned to them. This organizational shift allows for a team approach to teaching and learning.

We have had some exciting events and more upcoming. With the great support of the Scenic Acres School Enhancement Society we had Quest Theatre in for a weeklong residency looking at the work of Robert Munch. On the final day we were treated to a special presentation of the performances that the students put together to demonstrate their learning from this great weeklong event.

If you have noticed out naturalized area looking a little more maintained it is due to the grade 3/4 team. They were involved with, “We Are Wild About Weeding,” program. Sonia Law from the Calgary Zoo and Botanical Gardens came out to the school and worked with our grade 3/4 classes on September 27. After in class instruction, students were involved in hands-on weeding in the School flowerbeds and naturalization areas. Students identified and removed weeds such as dandelions, thistles, stinkweed and quack grass. Their

next step will be the planting of bulbs and the spreading of mulch for the winter. Thank you to the 3/4 team and the support of the Landscaping Coordinator and her team for keeping our school yard looking so great.

The next School Council meeting will be held on October 14th at 7:00 pm in the gym. At this time I will present the Alberta Provincial Achievement test results for Scenic Acres School, our school’s annual report and sharing information about the volunteer process.

Queen Elizabeth High School

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth High School is the designated school for Gifted and Talented Education in Northwest Calgary?

Located in West Hillhurst, Queen E offers a congregated setting for gifted learners from grades 7 to 12. Our programming offers enriched and in some cases accelerated learning opportunities.

We have had a wonderful and busy start to the school year. Our Humanities classes have been full of passionate and digressive discussion and debate. Our grade eight students have completed a full-day workshop in which they made documentaries and mockumentaries. Our grade nines have visited the Telus World of Science exhibit on the Titanic. Working with the University of Calgary we also have a writer-in-residence who is working with many students developing their creative writing skills.

Many of our students have already been involved in highly successful speech and debate competitions as well as taking active roles in citizenship and leadership through the volunteer opportunities the school provides.

Calgary Police Service crime mapping web site. Being a police service dedicated both philosophically and operationally to the concept of community-based policing, the Calgary Police Service strives to involve community members in every effort to keep Calgary safe for its citizens and visitors. This web application was developed to provide citizens of Calgary with an interactive mapping tool, to assist them in learning more about activity in their communities, and to engage them in problem-solving. It enables

users to search the Calgary Police Service’s records management system, and map reported crime in one or several crime categories. Data can be searched by crime type, time period, and community boundary. There are 12 categories of crime available for searching, including arson, assault, attempted murder, break and enter (2 types), vandalism, robbery, sexual offences, theft (3 types), and homicide. Each category is represented by a different symbol, which will help users to identify which crimes are happening in their community and when they are occurring. The application accesses information for the specified date range, and can retrieve and display information going back as far as 6 months.

The Calgary Police Service crime mapping program provides mapped locations of reported crimes from selected violation types. The locations identified on the map are intended to indicate the block in which the incident occurred and are not intended to enable the user to identify the exact incident location. The data are susceptible to a degree of error due to the complexities involved in compiling and programming the data.

In Our CityGo Girl 2010

Since 1999, Go Girl has helped to encourage girls to see the unlimited benefits of participation in active pursuits – mental, physical, emotional,

social, and environmental. Through this annual one-day event, we have successfully brought together individuals, agencies, educators, sport associations, sponsors and teens to enable young women to address the issues, barriers and challenges associated with their participation in sport and physical activity. Using this model, we can together foster an attitude of personal responsibility by teenage women for their own health and well being. An annual average of 300 junior and senior high school girls have participated in past Go Girl events. With a transition to quadrant based programming for this we anticipate that 700 participants will represent a diverse cross-section of teenage women at this year’s Go Girl. The energy will come from the young women who will be keen, enthusiastic and ready to actively participate in conference sessions.

In Our CityYielding to Emergency Vehicles

Time is the enemy in any emergency. You can help police, fire and EMS get to the scene quickly and safely by following the rules of the road. It’s important for motorists to understand how to safely yield right of way to emer-gency vehicles with lights and siren activated so that everyone stays safe.

What to do when an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated:

If you’re in the middle of an • intersection when an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated, clear the intersection. On a one or two lane road, motorists • should move to the right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal. On a road with three or more lanes, • motorists should move to the nearest side of the road and stop. If driving in the centre lane, move to the right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal. Come to a complete stop and wait • for the emergency vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency

vehicles (there is often more than one) before re-entering traffic flow.

Remember to signal. Remember, emergency •

vehicles may need to use any available road space to maneuver. This may include the use of shoulders and left hand turning lanes to pass other traffic.

While driving on the road:Drive defensively at all times. Be • attentive to sirens of emergency vehicles and be prepared to yield the right of way. It is the law for motorists to slow • down to at least 60 km/hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when driving in the lane next to where an emergency vehicle is stopped. Do not break the rules of the road • in order to give right of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include proceeding through a red light or making an illegal turn. Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in the area.Do not drive on or block the shoulder • of highways if emergency vehicles require it for access. Instead, wait for the emergency vehicle to pass before merging safely back in to the flow of traffic.

Family Caregivers Event

Having a S.M.A.R.T. Conversation with Maureen OsisDo any of the following scenarios describe your situation? I wish I could convince mom to see the doctor. Why won’t dad listen that he cannot drive anymore? If only my spouse would take better care of himself and follow the doctor’s orders. I have tried talking to the home care staff but they are not listening to me. You want to talk about a sensitive subject but are worried that the conversation will turn into an argument.

In Our CityAlderman's Report

Landfill Throw ‘n’ Go Facilities: It is now that time of year to prepare our yards for the winter season. These fa-cilities are set up at the entrance of all three City Landfills to allow residents a safe and convenient recycling or disposal of the following items all year round. The convenient entrance loca-tion at the Spyhill Landfill site at 69 St. & 112 Ave. NW, allows residents to use the facility without having to enter the actual landfill. Up to four tires can be taken free of charge, with the rims removed please, as well as house-hold chemicals. Appliances such as emptied fridges, freezers, stoves and microwaves will be accepted with a charge. For more details regarding the program, access The City’s website.

City’s Land Supply Exceeding Growth Demand: As of June 2010 The City of Calgary is showing a preliminary forecast of a 19-23 year planned land supply (8062 hectares) in greenfield suburban area structure plans, providing ample land for growth demand. This growth is based on the combined existing and the estimated supply capacity of additional Area Structure Plans underway in North Calgary Cell G, South Shepard, West View, and East Calgary Cells D & E.

Having a sufficient land supply is an important factor in supporting a com-petitive housing market and competi-tive housing prices as Calgary grows. The City’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP) requires that it maintains at least a 30 year developable land supply within The City’s jurisdiction. The MDP also endeavours to maintain up to a fifteen-year supply of land with approved policy plans in place and a 3-5 year serviced land supply. The

report released in May indicates a 5-6 year serviced land supply.

For more detailed information on this important topic, I would recommend the Suburban Resident Growth 2010-2014 Report, which guides developers, City departments and others on the or-derly development of lands within the city. A map referencing the areas of planned land supply is also available in The City of Calgary’s newsroom website.
