The OWBN Sabbat Status and Position Packet

Written 2003 by the Sabbat Coordinator's Office

Revised 2004 by the Sabbat Coordinator's Office

Revised 2010 by the Sabbat Coordinators Office

A note to the Reader: In some places this document will list present Traits or Abilities

differently then they appear in the various MET books. This is on purpose as this document's

intent is to clarify the social structure of the Sabbat and foster a gaming environment that iscompatible with a long running networked chronicle. With that said please do not think this

document is conclusive and the definitive guide on all things social in the Sabbat. We highly

encourage everyone to also read the MET Sabbat Guide and Table Top Guide to the Sabbat

(especially the code of Milan, position, faction, and Ritae descriptions) to gain insight into thesocial workings of the Sabbat.

    Sabbat Status:

Types of Status Traits: Sabbat Status is divided into three categories.

    1. Positional Status Traits: Are gained through service to the sect in some official capacity.

    2. Personal Status Traits: Are divided into two subcategories Accomplishment andReputational Traits.

a.Reputational Status Traits: Are gained and lost rapidly based on how others (mainly

    your Pack) view you.

    b. Accomplishment Status Traits: Are gained through the acts you have done, they are

rarely lost once earned. There is no limit to the number you can acquire but usuallygreater deeds cause others to forget your lesser deeds. In terms of game mechanics,

once an individual reaches his maximum allowable Status, new Accomplishment Statusmerely replaces older Reputational or Accomplishment Status Traits when gained, as

older deeds are set aside or forgotten in favor of newer deeds.

    3. Negative Status Traits:These are Traits that represent a failure or short coming you

posses. They are gained and lost based on how others view you.

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    2/23

The max Status Traits a character can claim/possess

    1. The Max Status a Character can claim equals 5 Reputational Traits, 5 Accomplishment

Traits, plus any Traits gained for their position(s) in the sect or Pack.

    2. The absolute max is 20 for the Regent: 10 personal + 10 positional (5 Regent + 1 True

Sabbat + 1 Pack Ductus +1 Consistory, +2 Faction Leader)

    3. A character can have two Negative Status Traits. If a character gains a third Negative

Status Trait, it replaces the oldest Negative Status Trait the character possessed. Note also

that Negative Status Traits do not count towards a character's maximum Status cap.

    Gaining and losing Status

    1. Note that before a character can gain any Sabbat Status they must hold the sect position of

True Sabbat. Thus the first Status Trait gained by any charactermust beInitiated(muchlike the first Status Trait gained by Camarilla characters must beAcknowledged), as the

Trait is the prerequisite for acquiring all other Sabbat Status.

    2. Gaining and losing Reputational Status:Reputational Status Traits are gained and lost in

the following ways unless noted specifically in the Status Traits description.

    a. Within the Pack: Granting a Reputational Status Trait requires that the Pack have a

consensus that the individual deserves the Trait. Also those members who feel the

individual deserves the Trait must have a combined Status Trait total equal to twice thewould-be recipients new permanent total. To remove a Reputational Status Trait

within the Pack is the same process, except the individuals removing the Trait must

have a combined Status equal to twice the "victims" current permanent Status Traits.(Remember to only count the Status Traits of those who agree to the change in the

individual's Status when determining if they have the Trait necessary for the change.)

    b. Outside the Pack: A single influential individual or a group of individuals can grant

and remove Status from another even if they are not in the same Pack. In the case of a

powerful individual granting another Cainite a Trait, the granting individual must have

at least five permanent Status Traits. In the case of a group granting the Trait, thegroup must have a combined seven permanent Status Traits. The group (or individual)

must spend twice the number of temporary Status Traits as the recipients new

permanent Status Traits. Traits can be removed in the same fashion by spending twiceas many temporary Status Traits as the individuals current permanent Traits (before

    the loss).

    c. Positions: Additionally some positions allow those in the office to grant and remove

    Reputational Status Traits.

    3. Gaining and losing Accomplishment Status:Accomplishment Status Traits are gained and

    3/23

lost in the following ways unless noted specifically in the Status Traits description.

    a. To gain these Traits your character must fulfill the minimum of the accomplishment, and have it recognized by a higher-ranking member of the sect hierarchy (possibly your

Pack's ductus). Granting the Trait requires the character in authority spend a temporary

    Status Trait.

    b. To remove these Traits it must be proven that the individual did not accomplish the

task, to the satisfaction of the individual who acknowledged the Trait in the first place. If that individual has died then a person of equal (or greater) authority to that individual

can remove it, with sufficient proof. Removing the Trait requires the character in

authority spend a temporary Status Trait.

    c. These Traits cannot be claimed multiply times. They can be gained once per Trait

only. For example there is no such thing as Blooded X 2 or Enriched X 2. In the unlikely

event you gain one of these Traits and it is removed, it can be regained by accomplishing

the feat for real, to the satisfaction of your now-dubious and scrutinizing superiors.

    4. Gaining and losing Negative Status:Negative Status Traits are gained and lost in thefollowing ways unless noted specifically in the Status Trait's description.

    a. Within the Pack: Giving a Negative Status Trait requires only that the Pack have a

consensus that the individual deserves the Trait. Also those members who feel theindividual deserves the Trait must have a combined Status Trait total equal to twice the

would-be recipients total positive Status Traits. The Pack can remove the Trait by

reaching a consensus that it should be removed.

    b. Outside the Pack: A single influential individual or a group of individuals can give or

remove a Negative Status Trait. In the case of a powerful individual granting anotherCainite a Trait, the granting individual must have at least five permanent Status Traits.

In the case of a group granting the Trait, the group must have a combined seven

permanent Status Traits. The group (or individual) must spend twice the number oftemporary Status Traits as the recipients permanent positive Status Traits. An

individual or group can remove a Negative Status Trait in the same manner they can

    give one.

    c. Positions: Additionally some positions allow those in the office to grant and removeNegative Status Traits.

    d. An individual may, on their own, achieve the removal of a Negative Status Trait theyhave received if they received the Negative Status for failing a task, by accomplishing

the failed task correctly twice in a row the Trait is automatically removed. For exampleDangerous would be removed by going on two hunts without making trouble forpackmates, or a Priest who completes two rites correctly would have their

    Untrustworthy Negative Trait removed.

    Uses for Status

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    4/23

Within the Sabbat Status Traits can be used as detailed below.

    1. Until a Sabbat member has the Positional Status ofInitiated, he may not bid Status Traits

instead of regular Traits, add Status Traits to his social Traits (though Negative Status

Traits are still subtracted) for comparing Traits on ties in applicable social challenges, bidNegative Status Traits against another individual nor hold a sect level position.

    2. You may bid a Status Trait instead of a regular Trait in any applicable social challenge. You must tell your challenger you wish to use your Status Traits on the challenge.

    3. Your Status Traits may be used to add to your Social Traits during an applicable Social

Challenge. You must tell your challenger you wish to use your Status Traits on thechallenge.

    4. If an individual wishes to use their Status Traits in a social challenge you may choose to

ignore their Status. This, naturally, prevents you from using your own Status in thatchallenge.

    a. In the case that they bid a Status Trait for the challenge they must bid another Trait(though they do not risk losing the temporary Status Trait).

    b. In the case of comparing Trait totals neither individual may add their Status Traits.

    c. If you choose to ignore anothers Status, for the rest of the evening you may not use

your own Status in any social challenge or bid others Negative Status Traits againstthem, and you run the risk of the individual's wrath for such disrespect. Though you

may still have your Negative Status Traits bid against you and you must still subtract

them from your total social Traits on ties.

    5. Negative Status Traits may not be bid instead of regular Traits in applicable Social

Challenges. Rather than adding to Social Traits on applicable Social Challenges forpurposes of ties, Negative Status subtract from the total Social Traits.

    6. Negative Status Traits may be bid against you as if they where Negative Social Traits.

    7. Status may be added to all Ritae Challenges to perform them, and execute them. Meaning

you gain a number of Bonus Social Traits equal to your status in the Static to perform

Ritae, not all War Parties now gain additional bonus traits equal to your status to killsomeone.

    List of Sabbat Status Traits

These lists are in no way conclusive, players and STs are encouraged to develop unique Traits

that suit their game. Please keep in mind the concept of Reputational Accomplishment andNegative Traits when doing this. Also please submit popular new Traits to the Sabbat

Coordinator ([email protected]) so they can be added to future versions of this

    document.

    List of Reputational Status Traits

Adept: Awarded to a character that is extremely proficient at a skill or ability. Normallythe skill would follow the Trait in the listing, for exampleAdept at Ritae, orAdept at

Finances. Note that this is an in-character statement of how adept a character is, and

does not necessarily correspond to how many levels of the ability the character has.

Blessed: When two levels of non-Humanity morality are earned by a Vampire he may be

givenBlessed. In this case the Trait must be granted by the character's Pack Priest or amember of the Sabbat Clergy ranked higher than the recipient. This Trait is not

confined to being awarded for Path rating and may also be awarded in other appropriate

situations, however if it is awarded for Path rating, and the character's Path rating drops

below two, it will probably be removed.

Dedicated: There is some cause that others view you as being determined to uphold or

protect. This could be a tangible such as the bishop of your city or intangible idea, like

    the loyalist movement.

Devoted: When three levels of non-Humanity morality are earned by a Vampire he maybe givenDevoted. In this case the Trait must be granted by the character's Pack Priest

or a member of the Sabbat Clergy ranked higher than the recipient. This Trait is not

confined to being awarded for Path rating and may also be awarded in other appropriate

situations, however if it is awarded for Path rating, and the character's Path rating dropsbelow three, it will probably be removed.

Enlightened:When four levels of non-Humanity morality are earned by a Vampire hemay be givenBlessed. In this case the Trait must be granted by the character's Pack

Priest or a member of the Sabbat Clergy ranked higher than the recipient. This Trait is

not confined to being awarded for Path rating and may also be awarded in otherappropriate situations, however if it is awarded for Path rating, and the character's Path

rating drops below four, it will probably be removed.

Favored:Given by a Cardinal or The Regent, to their choice agents. Anyone who

punishes or destroys aFavoredmember of the Sabbat faces automatic monomacy,

unless they have a very good reason.

Feared: Others fear you it's that simple.

Loyal: A Cainite who is viewed as uncompromising in their loyalty to the sect or thePack (depending on who grants it) often given to infiltrators after their return.

Militant: The vampire is known for their combative ability and willingness to use it.

Ominous: A Vampire who has a reputation for being very feared and respected.

Members of the Black Hand often hold this Trait in addition to their positional Status.

You must have at least three other Status (includingFearedandRespected) in order to

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    6/23

be Ominous as Reputational Status rather than Positional Status.

Protected:Granted by a Bishop (or higher member of the clergy) or an individual witheight or more Status. Once granted it can only be removed by that individual. Giving

this Status Trait is akin to saying, "I will hurt anyone who hurts this person; I will kill

anyone who kills this person." If the individual who granted this Trait wishes to removeit they need only spend a temporary Status Trait. Also if the individual who granted

this Trait is killed, this Trait is lost.

Recognized:Usually granted at large holiday when one individual stands out beyond the

    rest in the crowd.

Relentless:A Cainite with this Trait is viewed as willing to succeed at all costs. Ingeneral individuals with this Trait already have theFearedandProven Status Traits.

Respected: A Vampire who has won the respect of packmates and others through non-

    physical means.

Supported:It is usually given by one Pack to the Ductus or Priest of another Pack, todenote that the one Pack supports the other and will aid them. Granting this Trait is

akin to saying you fuck with him, you fuck with us. When listed you might list it asSupportedby Pack X, thus not listing each individual who contributed Status but their

Pack in general. This Trait is granted in the normal method, and once given it can onlybe removed by the group that granted it. If they choose to remove the Trait they need

only reach a consensus, and spend one temporary Status Trait each. Also if all

members of the group who granted this Trait are killed, this Status Trait is lost.

Chosen: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Black Hand.

Purifier: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Inquisition

Fire Brand: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Loyalist Faction.

Bolshevik: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Moderates Faction.

Architect:Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Status Quo Faction.

Solider: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Ultra-Conservative Faction.

Fanatic: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Pander Faction.

Witch: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Occult Underground Faction.

    Faction.

    7/23

Devil: Any Sabbat member who is a known member of the Children of the Dracon

    Faction. As in Devils Advocate

Proven: A Sabbat who has earned the respect of their Pack and/or the Sabbat time and

    time again.

Founder: One of the founding members of the Sabbat. (This is for Sabbat Coordinator

    NPCs only.)

    List of Accomplishment Status Traits:

Battle Scarred: The Vampire was Wounded or Incapacitated fighting enemies of theSect.

Blooded: The vampire killed another Vampire in fair combat.

Charred: The vampire survived, one of the great threats having survived in the sun or

fire when called to do so by the sect. (Fire dancing, and sun dancing dont count, this isdaylight operations, or arsons for the sects ends).

Enriched: The vampire committed diablerie in accordance with sect practice but only

gained if a generation is gained.

Fortified: The vampire committed diablerie in accordance with sect practice but only

gained if the victim was either a sect defector, or a position holder of the enemy sect.

Gifted: A vampire with knowledge of a form of blood magic (Koldunism, Assamite

    Sorcery, Thaumaturgy or Necromancy).

Glorified:Each Festivo dello Estinto the Cardinal of a region runs a game of instinct that

allows for multiple Pack participation. Each member of the winning Pack receives theGlorifiedStatus Trait until the next year and the next "great game of instinct".

Hunted: A Vampire who is blood hunted (by the Camarilla) in at least one Camarilla

    domain.

Infamous: A Vampire who is blood hunted (by the Camarilla) in four or more Camarilla

    domains.

Martial: The members of the winning Pack in a War Party receive this Status Trait. ThisTrait is automatically lost at the next War Party, Grand Ball or Festival of the Dead.

Undefeated: The vampire has never lost (count the last five) a fair fight or monomacy.

Facing overwhelming odds that force flight doesn't invalidate this Status. (Once you

lose though you automatically lose this Status Trait)

Sanctified: Can only be held by those holding rating 5 in their Path, and must have taught

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    8/23

    a path of Enlightenment.

    List of Negative Status Traits

Dangerous: This Trait goes to vampires who endanger packmates for stupid reasons,

particularly while on a hunt or otherRitus-related mission. Most Packs only give it tothose who do things like shooting packmates or standing around to argue with

flamethrower-wielding soldiers; strict Packs give it simply for creating a risky situation.

Ignorant: The vampire cannot remember some essential tenet of the Sabbat as explained

to her time and time again. Most often this Trait goes to a vampire who says something

like "Well, maybe some of the Antediluvians are okay."

Slow: This Trait goes to any vampire who gets overtaken by humans, whether in pursuit

on foot, by vehicles or some more exotic means of travel.

Untrustworthy: The vampire failed in the performance of some key duty of her position. This may go to a Priest who "botches" aRitus or an Abbot who fails to maintain the

security of the Pack's haven. But it may also go to some other leader for an explicitviolation of his duties

Vain: (aka Cocky, Full of Himself, etc) The vampire claims mastery of some field she

goes on to fail publicly at, preferably in an impressive or even physically dangerousway. This Trait commemorates acts of unsuccessful hubris.

    Sabbat Positions

In general Sabbat positions can be divided into two categories. Pack Positions, and Sectpositions.

    A. An individual can have only one position in their Pack at a time.

    B. An individual can have only one position in the Sect at a time, except True Sabbat,Consistory

member, and Faction Leaders, which are special cases.

    C. When an individual willingly and amiably leaves a position their replacement will often givesthem the Reputational Status their position had afforded them.

    D. Sect Positions:1. Until an individual has the Positional Status Trait ofInitiated, they may not hold a sect

    level position.

    The Hierarchy of the Sabbat

True SabbatThe character has undergone the Creation Rites. They can participate and contribute to Sabbat

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    9/23

Ritae and possess Sabbat Status. A Packs Priest or member of the Sabbat Clergy awards this

position after the Cainite has went through the creation rights. Note that this may or may not

occur upon the Embrace. Some Packs require the Cainite to prove a familiarity with the properbehavior during Ritae, with the sect's goals (as presented by that Pack) or other criterion.

    1. Gains theInitiatedStatus Trait. Only a bishop or higher can remove this position

    2. This position does not prevent a character from holding any other positions.

    3. Without this position the vampire is considered "false" Sabbat (or not Sabbat at

all) and cannot participate in Ritae, or possess any Sabbat Status.

AbbotThe Abbot is the caretaker of the Pack's communal haven and the individual who ensure the Pack

has a steady food source. This is a Pack Position and does not prevent you from holding other

    positions within the sect.

    1. Gains theLoyalStatus Trait. As long as the character holds the position this Trait

    cannot be permanently removed.

    2. The Abbot can ignore one Status held by a Pack mates whose actions jeopardize the

haven. This applies only to immediate threats.

    Pack Priest

Is the Packs spiritual guide and shepherd. While there may be other Priests in the Pack to assist

them it is their task to lead the Ritae, and chart the spiritual progression of their Pack mates. Inaddition, the Pack Priest often acts as intermediary between the Pack and the members of the

Sabbat clergy. This is a Pack Position and does not prevent you from holding other positions

    within the sect.

    1. Gains theEnlightenedStatus Trait. As long as the character holds the position this

    Trait cannot be permanently removed.

    2. The Pack Priest can grant and remove the Blessed Reputational Status Trait for

members of his Pack at the cost of one temporary Status Trait each. This is done to

signify the individuals rise onto a path.

    3. The Pack Priest is responsible for running the Pack's Ritae and it is their ability that

determines the effects of the Ritae. See page 140 in The Sabbat Guide

    4. A Pack Priest can act as an acolytes and assist a Bishop or higher in the Priesthood

perform a Ritae. See page 140 in the Sabbat guide.

    5. A Former pack priest is allowed to continue to practice ritae within the sect. This

position is known as Ordained Priest. An Ordained priest is allowed to keep his

Enlightened Status Trait as a reputational trait and continue to practice the ritae (though

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    10/23

not teach it to others outside of the priesthood. (I.E. Pack Priests, Bishops,

Archbishops, etc). However should the Ordained Priest have dragged the name of the

priesthood into the mud, so to speak, then 3 or more pack priests may come togetherand spend 1 temporary status each to permanently remove an Ordained Priest.

    6. Pack Priests of the Sabbat are the base level of the priesthood in the Sabbat. Theyare the starting level for any Sabbat member who wishes to practice the Ritae.

    7. A Priest (either kind) is allowed to learn (and perform) the Ritae without fear ofscrutiny from the Sabbat's clergy (i.e. other priests, bishops, archbishops, etc).

    Ductus

The Pack's leader. Depending on the Pack this individual may be the strongest or the mostcharismatic person in the Pack. But when push comes to shove the Ductus is the one considered

to have authority over the Pack, and in matters of extreme importance the individual is who is

"more equal" then everyone else. This is a Pack Position and does not prevent you from holding

    other positions within the sect.

    1. Gains theFearedStatus Trait. As long as the character holds the position this Traitcannot be permanently removed.

    2. The Ductus can grant and remove permanent Reputational and Negative Status from

members of his Pack at the cost of one temporary Status Trait each. Any permanentTrait after the third costs the Ductus a permanent Trait.

    3. The Ductus appoints all other positions within a pack.

    Templar

Templars are the aides, lackeys, and strong arms of the Sabbat Clergy. There are someBishops, who prefer their Templars to be called Paladins, and while there is no rule against this, it is best

that such a Templar not flaunt the title lest a Cardinal's Paladin take notice. Templar PCs

and NPCs to Cardinals, Prisci, Consistory Members, or the Regent are Sabbat CoordinatorApproval.

    1. Gains theRespected, and Ominous Status Traits. As long as the character holds

the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Can disobey an order from an officer lower-ranked than the one who appointed

him, as long as it's disobedience is in the line of duty. If the Templar's liege refusesto support them then normal Sabbat justice takes it's course.

PaladinThese are the elite Templars of the Cardinals. By tradition for each Cardinal there is a table of

12 Paladins. One for each of Charlemagne's paladins or each of the apostles depending on whom

you ask. These individuals tend to be quite old, and view a mark of dishonor on one paladin a

mark on them all. Because of this they tend to be very protective of the title and do not look

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    11/23

highly on Templars who would call themselves Paladins lest they soil the title for them all. As

they are the elite of a cardinal's Templars, it is possible that a cardinal will have regular Templars

as well. This Position is Sabbat Coordinator Approval for PCs and NPCs.

    1. Gains theRespected, Proven, and Ominous Status Traits. As long as the character

holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Can disobey an order from an officer lower-ranked than the one who appointed

him, as long as it's disobedience is in the line of duty. If the Paladin'sliege refuses to support them then normal Sabbat justice takes it's course.

    Bishop

The Bishops are the local leaders of the Sabbat. Often being responsible for a medium sizedmetropolitan area. It is possible that a city will have no archbishop and several bishops, or even

an Archbishop and several assisting Bishops. Unless directly serving an Archbishop the Bishops

answer directly to the Cardinals. Like other members of the Sabbat clergy, Bishop will delegate

responsibilities to Templars, Ducti, Priests, and chosen war leaders. But delegating too muchpower could be taken as a sign of weakness and thus the Bishop must be cautious. To become a

Bishop you must be appointed by youre areas Archbishop or in the case of no Archbishop foryoure area, the Cardinal of youre area instead must give approval. This Position is Approved In

Character through the Methods listed above and storyteller permission.

    1. Gains theFeared, and Proven Status Traits. As long as the character holds theposition these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Can appoint and remove Ducti and Priests to the Packs within their jurisdiction.

    3. Can appoint (and remove) their own Templars. To promote an individual to a

Templar, the bishop must spend a temporary Status Trait. They must like wisespend a temporary Status Trait to dismiss their own Templar.

    4. The can choose to lead Ritae in which they participate (they must assign asurrogate if they decline).

    5. A Bishop can grant and remove permanent Reputational and Negative Status to

other members of the Sabbat at the cost of one temporary Status Trait each. Anypermanent Trait after the third costs the bishop a permanent Trait.

    6. Can strip an individual of their position as a true Sabbat. This is done in responseto serious violations to the Sabbats governing code. This ability requires the

bishop spend a temporary Status Trait for anyone below the Rank of Bishop. This

ability costs the bishop a permanent Status Trait to use on another Bishop and theApproval of an Archbishop or Higher. This ability cannot be used on Archbishops,

Prisci, Cardinals, Consistory Members, or the Regent. Using this ability on high-

ranking individuals outside the clergy without a very good reason could result in the

    bishop's own demise.

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    12/23

    7. A Bishop can set terms on which nomadic Packs enter her jurisdiction. They

cannot refuse passage to a Pack that acknowledges their authority and takes part inRitae; they can restrict their ability to act independently while residing in the area.

ArchbishopWhere the Bishops rule of metropolitan area, Archbishops rule over an entire city and it's

outlying suburbs, at least that is the idea. In practice Archbishops can control much larger areas

(entire counties or tri-county areas) or a large section of the true metropolises of the world. While rarely does it happen that an individual becomes an Archbishop without first being a

bishop, those rare few who do will surely feel the social pressure to be trained as a member of

the Priesthood. Archbishops will often delegate some responsibilities to bishops, Templars,

Ducti, Priests, and chosen war leaders. But delegating too much power could be taken as a signof weakness. To become an Archbishop you must have the support of a Priscus and the Approval

of youre area's Cardinal. This Position is Approved In Character through the Methods listed

    above and storyteller permission.

    1. Gains theFeared, Proven, and Relentless Status Traits. As long as the character

holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Can appoint and remove Bishops within their jurisdiction. They can also appoint

and remove other lesser offices but often task such jobs to the Bishops in their

    jurisdiction

    3. Can appoint (and remove) their own Templars. These actions cost the archbishop

    nothing

    4. The can choose to lead Ritae in which they participate (they must assign a

    surrogate if they decline).

    5. An archbishop can grant and remove permanent Reputational and Negative

Status to other members of the Sabbat at the cost of one temporary Status Traiteach. Any permanent Trait after the third costs the archbishop a permanent Trait.

    6. Can strip an individual of their position as a true Sabbat. This is done in response

to serious violations to the Sabbats governing code. This ability requires thearchbishop spend a temporary Status Trait for anyone who is below his rank. This

ability costs the archbishop a permanent Status Trait to use on another archbishop

and the approval of the area's Cardinal. This ability cannot be used on the Prisci,Cardinals, Consistory Members, or the Regent. Using this ability on high-ranking

individuals outside the clergy without a very good reason could result in the

archbishop finding them-self in the same situation.

    7. In smaller jurisdictions an archbishop can set terms on which nomadic Packs

enter her jurisdiction. They cannot refuse passage to a Pack that acknowledges

their authority and takes part in Ritae; they can restrict their ability to act

    13/23

independently while residing in the area. In larger jurisdictions this is often tasked

    to Bishops.

    8. Can strip a member of the sabbat under his command of one or more temporary

Reputational Status Traits, for inappropriate performance of the Ritae. This costs

the archbishop nothing for the first three Traits, and a temporary Status Trait foreach beyond the third. In the case of gross deviations the archbishop can black list

the Priest, or other participants. No Cainite who has been black listed by an

archbishop can move up the ranks of the clergy (and often other positions) withoutgetting an archbishop or superior to remove them from the black list. In cases where

the black listing archbishop is disgraced their successor will generally remove the

    black listing upon taking office.

    Priscus

Prisci are the advisors to the regent, cardinals, archbishops, and councils of bishops (and

occasionally others). Generally these individuals hold vast power, in the form of physical

prowess, mental acumen, or favors owed. They will at times act on their own, but in generalthey act as advisors for younger Cainites. This Position is Sabbat Coordinator Approval for

NPCs and not allowed for PCs.

    1. Gains the Confirmed, Feared, and Infamous Status Traits. As long as the

character holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Only a priscus can appoint or remove another vampire as priscus. This costs the

priscus one temporary Status Trait and usually only happens after all the priscus in

the area agree. Once awarded the position the new Priscus is assigned to aparticular Sabbat leader. This affiliation is not fixed and it can change with time.

    3. The priscus can spend a temporary Status Trait to ignore an order given by anyvampire of lower station than the one the priscus serves.

    4. Priscus can use his Status Traits for retests in Mental Challenges directly relatedto advice he's giving his leader- testing an infiltration plan, or scouting out

    saboteurs for instance.

    5. Can appoint (and remove) their own Templars. These actions cost the Priscusnothing.

    6. Can strip a member Sabbat of one or more permanent Reputational Status Traits, for inappropriate performance of the Ritae. This costs the priscus nothing for the

first three Traits, and a temporary Status Trait for each beyond the third. In the case

of gross deviations the priscus can black list the Priest, or other participants. NoCainite who has been black listed by a cardinal can move up the ranks of other

positions without getting a Cardinal, Priscus, or The Regent to remove them from

the black list. In cases where the black listing Prisci is disgraced their successor will

generally remove the black listing upon taking office.

    Cardinal

What Archbishops do for cities, Cardinals do for whole states or even countries. They bearpersonal responsibility for the crusades in their jurisdiction. But even with their great power they

must delegate some of the authority to the Bishops and Archbishops; after all it is a big job

organizing a war for the souls of the Cainite race. These individuals will rarely come to powerwith rising through the ranks of the clergy, and should such a thing ever happen such an

individual would ritually be promoted through the ranks of the clergy before taking the position

of Cardinal. This Position is Sabbat Coordinator NPC only.

    1. Gains theFeared, Proven,Relentless, and Ominous Status Traits. As long as the

character holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Can appoint and remove Archbishops within their jurisdiction. This cost the

Cardinal one temporary Status Trait. They can also appoint and remove other lesser

offices within their jurisdiction at no cost.

    3. Can appoint (and remove) their own Templars. These actions cost the cardinal

nothing. They can appoint (and remove) their own Paladins. This costs thecardinal a temporary Status Trait.

    4. The can choose to lead Ritae in which they participate (they must assign a

    surrogate if they decline).

    5. Cardinals can grant and remove permanent Reputational and Negative Status to

other members of the Sabbat at the cost of one temporary Status Trait each. Anypermanent Trait after the third costs the cardinal a permanent Trait. They can grant

    the special Trait ofFavored.

    6. Can strip an individual of their position as a true Sabbat. This is done in response

to serious violations to the Sabbats governing code. This ability costs the cardinal

nothing. This ability cannot be used on the Prisci, Consistory members, or theRegent.

    7. Can strip a member of the sabbat under his command of one or more permanent

Reputational Status Traits, for inappropriate performance of the Ritae. This coststhe cardinal nothing for the first three Traits, and a temporary Status Trait for each

beyond the third. In the case of gross deviations the Cardinal can black list the

Priest, or other participants. No Cainite who has been black listed by a cardinal canmove up the ranks of other positions without getting a Cardinal or The Regent to

remove them from the black list. In cases where the black listing cardinal is

disgraced their successor will generally remove the black listing upon taking office.

    Consistory

The Sabbat Consistory is made up of the select Prisci, Cardinals, and the Regent of the Sabbat

and the Seraphim of the Black Hand. It is the job of the Consistory to appoint a new Regent,

decide Sabbat policy and laws. Being a member of the Consistory is in addition to whatever

other position you may have. Thus one can be a regular Priscus or a Priscus who is also a

member of the Consistory. This Position is Sabbat Coordinator NPC only

    1. Gains theDevoutStatus Trait. As long as the character holds the position these

    Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Only the Consistory may appoint new members to the Consistory. This is done

by a vote of the council.

    3. The Consistory decides all Sabbat Policy. From the laws to what sieges are

approved to take place. While the Regent has the final word of who he

makes Cardinals, he still requires the support of the Consistory.

    4. Can change or alter any sabbat law, policy, or method on a sect wide level by avote of the Consistory.

    5. As a whole the Consistory appoints the Regent of the Sabbat by vote.

    The Regent

In theory the Regent has supreme power over the sect. In practice subordinates distort or justplain "lose" orders they refuse to accept, and the regent's power depends on her personal base of

support. The regent is inevitably an old vampire, who has been selected from within the ranks of

the consistory. And with a sect as large as the Sabbat power at this level must be delegated for

anything to get done. This position is Sabbat Coordinator NPC only.

    1. Gains theFeared, Proven,Relentless, Ominous, and Supreme Status Traits. As

long as the character holds the position these Traits cannot be permanentlyremoved.

    2. Can appoint and remove Cardinals, this costs the regent one temporary StatusTrait and also requires the support of the Consistory. They can also appoint and

remove other lesser offices at no cost.

    3. Can appoint (and remove) their own Templars. They can appoint (and remove)their own Paladins. These actions cost the regent nothing.

    4. The can choose to lead Ritae in which they participate (they must assign asurrogate if they decline).

    5. The Regent can grant and remove permanent Reputational and Negative Status toother members of the Sabbat at the cost of one temporary Status Trait each. Any

permanent Trait after the third costs the regent a permanent Trait. They can grant

    the special Trait ofFavored.

    6. Can strip an individual of their position as a true Sabbat. This is done in response

to serious violations to the Sabbats governing. This ability costs the regent nothing

and may be done to anyone.

    7. Can strip a member of the sabbat of one or more permanent Reputational StatusTraits, for inappropriate performance of the Ritae. This costs the Regent nothing for

the first three Traits and a temporary Status Trait for each beyond the third. In the

case of gross deviations the Regent can black list the Priest, or other participants. No Cainite who has been black listed by the regent can move up the ranks of the

clergy (and often other positions) without getting the Regent to remove them from

the black list. In cases where the Regent is disgraced their successor will generallyremoves the black listing upon taking office.

    8. Can use temporary Status Traits for retests in mental challenges related to her

role as the sect leader: detecting plots against her, giving instructions and so on.

    Special Cases

The following are three special cases, each are positions outside of the normal Sabbat Hierarchy,

but are given great power by them.

    Inquisitors

The thirty individuals who run the Sabbat inquisition. This position Is Sabbat Coordinator

    Approval for PCs and NPCs.

    1. Gains the Confirmed,Feared, and Ominous Status Traits. As long as the

character holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. Have the ability to appoint (and dismiss) their own Templars at the cost of one

temporary Status Trait. They can appoint (and remove) their own Paladins. Thiscosts the cardinal a temporary Status Trait.

    3. Have the authority to move and accuse as they will.

    4. Talk to the Sabbat coordinator about other stuff, since they have the authority to

depose Ducti and Priests alike, even they Archbishops and Cardinals are not safe

    from their power.

    5. Inquisitors may hold no other Sabbat position besides Pack Positions and being

True Sabbat while they serve as such.

    6. An Inquisitor may only be removed from this position by the Grand Inquisitor or

    the Consistory.

    Seraphim

Act as generals for the Black Hand. Serving the regent directly and sitting on the Consistory

with Prisci and cardinals. They are the leaders of the Black Hand. This Position is Sabbat

    Coordinator NPC only.

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    17/23

    1. Gains theBranded, Enforced, Engaged, and FearedStatus Traits. As long as the

character holds the position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. The Seraphim serve the Regent of the Sabbat directly, when on service to the

Regent they may carry any weight or authority given to them by the Regent.

    3. Seraphim may hold no other Sabbat position besides Pack Positions, True Sabbat,

and Members of the Consistory while they serve as such.

    Faction Leader

These are the nominal recognized heads of the Sabbat Factions. While not an official

position in the sect, these Cainites hold a lot of status, positions, and sway within the Sabbatitself. Faction leaders may hold other positions in the sect in addition to this one and enjoy

benefits from both. This position is Sabbat Coordinator NPC only.

    1. Gains theFeared and RespectedStatus Traits. As long as the character holdsthe position these Traits cannot be permanently removed.

    2. The leaders of the Sabbat Factions have final say on Faction Policy and

direction. Many will listen instead of dictate policy of the faction, but this

not required. As such Faction Leaders may remove any Sabbat Vampire from

their faction with the expenditure of a temporary Status Trait. This is usuallydone only when the vampire has betrayed the faction in some way. A vampire

so ejected from his faction may not rejoin his former faction (though he could

in theory join another) until such time as the Faction Leader allows him toreturn.

    3. Faction Leaders may only hold any other Sabbat position in addition to thisone.

    Who Out Ranks Who?

What follows is in no way absolute, there are Prisci who are not held in as high regard, and there

are inquisitors who can command the respect (and animosity) of the Seraphim. Unless the

Black Hand is activated many Ducti simply ignore the Black Hand. Additionally Templars andPaladins can command greater authority when acting with the authority of their liege. This list

is simply to give a new Sabbat player some idea of where all the titles fall.

    Status Related Merits and Flaws

The Following Merits now function as such in the Sabbat.

Reputation: This merit simple allows for you to have a title that you may inform people your character is

known for. Examples include Ezekiel Lord of Montreal, Venere Carboni The Daemon Maestro,

Sascha Vykos Caines Angel. This reputation does not factor into any of the Status system. It simply

allows others to know your PC is known for doing X thing. As such this merit does not require Sabbat

Coordinator Approval, but simply the permission of your Storyteller

Prestigious Sire: Like the reputation Merit, this simply allows you to inform others that your Sire is a

famous member of the Sabbat. Others may choose to allow some form of respect and expect much of you

as an heir to such famous blood. This merit in of itself does not require Sabbat Coordinator permission

unless you are the childe of a White Wolf Canon Sabbat NPC.

The Following Flaws now function as such in the Sabbat.

Infamous Sire: This Flaw functions as the exact opposite of Prestigious Sire Merit.

Notoriety: This flaw is the exact opposite of the Reputation Merit.

Probationary Sect Member: You may hold no Status in the Sabbat and are not considered True Sabbat. You are a shovelhead.

    Abilities

Politics: Only Sabbat vampires may use this ability to gain the Status of Sabbat Vampires. With each

expenditure of this ability, a vampire may ask what the Status of the Vampire is in the Sabbat and what if

any faction he is a known member of (if your membership in faction is unknown then you dont get this

    information.)

Lore: Sabbat: The higher this ability the more likely one is to know more obscure members of the

Sabbat. With a successfully test with using this ability a vampire may learn what a Sabbat vampires

Status is (Not the the actual number of different traits, just what their general ranking in the Sabbat is).

This ability works in a reverse manor of sorts. As the higher the Status on the vampire, the more likely

they are to have heard of them. As such the chart below will provide you with what level of the ability

you are required to have to know the corresponding status level. The Status level listed on the chart is the

minimum status required to throw the challenge, if the status is higher then the requirement you may also

get to the throw the challenge.

War Parties, Wild Hunts and Status Outside the sect

    A. The Sabbat does not give Status or Prestige to those who are not members of the sect.

    B. If a Sabbat is the subject of a Wild Hunt, they may not use their Status for any purpose.

Follow all of the rules for a character that does not have theInitiatedStatus Trait. A Wild

Hunted individual may still choose to ignore another Status, and thus gain those benefits and

    draw backs.

    C. If a Sabbat is the subject of a War Party, they may not use their Status for any purpose.

Follow all of the rules as if the character is ignoring Status. Additionally, Negative Status cannotbe bid against an individual with a war party called against them.

    For Camarilla Storytellers and players

A discussion of the differences between Sabbat and Camarilla Status in application and

    outlook: A Camarillan players perspective.

In some ways Status matters more in the Sabbat, and in other ways it matters less. On the

surface, Status in the Sabbat is less a guide to your age and political savvy, and more a guide to

your sheer power. However, looking deeper one can see just as many, if not more, politicspresent behind Status in the Sabbat, than there are in the Camarilla. An Archbishop could keep

his enemy close to him, and underfoot, by appointing him Templar and thereby commanding his

every move. Or a Bishop could take note that a sect member holds much AccomplishmentStatus, none granted by the individuals ductus, and ask questions.

Likewise the Status of the Sabbat has a more spiritual aspect, as individuals are recognizedfor their non-Humanity Paths. Yet at the same time, it appears to be less a system of currying

favor, and more a system of recognizing actual, definitive actions, than the Status system of the

Camarilla. To becomeEnrichedorBloodedfor example, there are specific, physical criterion

that must be fulfilled. And yet although one is technically entitled to the Status one has fulfilledthe prerequisites of, the Trait must still be awarded. While it is true that a wider range of people,

either individually or together, might award the Trait, they risk angering the immediate superior

of the individual who has chosen to not award the Trait for some reason. Although the risk is

  • 8/4/2019 Sabbat Status Packet 2010 Plain Text

    20/23

lower than, for example, a Camarillan recognizing a compatriot with a grant of Status for deeds

the Prince has deliberately chosen to ignore, the risk is nonetheless potentially present.

In many ways it is also harder to lose Status in the Sabbat. Many actions that in the

Camarilla would be punished with removal of Status, in the Sabbat are punished with physical

violence, such as disobedience of a superior, for example. In addition, many Sabbat Status, asstated in their specific descriptions above, cannot be removed unless it can be proven they were

falsely gained. For example, on cannot loseEnrichedunless it can be proven that the individual

did not successfully diablerize, gaining generation, in compliance with sect practices.

Because of things like this, Status is both more and less important in the Sabbat than it is in

the Camarilla. It is less important because its easy to accrue, and hard to lose. Its more

important because its a genuine measure of what youve done, and a genuine measure of therespect youre worth. However, just like Camarilla Status, where it came from and how can

make it less or more valuable on an individual basis.

The Sabbat is also more and less accepting of new members. Any newly created Cainitethats been put through the Creation Rites is givenInitiated, the technical equivalent of

CamarillaAcknowledgment. There is no Accounting period, in many cases. Although being aSabbat withoutInitiated(i.e. a Shovelhead) is in many ways similar to being under the

Accounting, or perhaps similar to having the Probationary Sect Member Flaw, as one is indeed a

probationary member of the sect only.

All in all, although Sabbat and Camarilla Status are in many ways both similar and different,

what it boils down to is that within the Camarilla genre, characters are attempting to maintain

their Humanity, while struggling within the Camarilla political system to gain as much powerthrough Status and Prestation as possible. Status for the Camarilla is both a means and an end.

Within the Sabbat genre, however, characters are attempting to maintain their lives, and increase

their non-Human spirituality, while racing against time and ignorance to prepare for Gehenna. For the Sabbat, at least on the surface level, it is much more accurate to say that Status, rather

than either an end or a means, is merely a side effect. Save the deeper levels of the importance

of Sabbat Status for when you're less used to playing Camarilla.

    FAQ

    Q. What happened to Path Status?

    A. The Status traits for being a path are still there, however your path no longer factors into the

max status you may now posses. Additionally the Status Traits that one can gain for being a path

are not required to be taken; you may select others you meet the requirements for instead. Itsimply an option if that is what you wish to be known for..

    Q. Where is Ordained Priest?

    A. Ordained Priest was a fabricated position in the previous Sabbat Status Packet. It does not

appear anywhere in Sabbat Genre, all Sabbat Priests are Pack Priests, Former Pack Priests or

higher ranking in the sect. This has been altered to correct this and make it more in line withgenre. As such Ordained Priests have become former Pack Priests who are still allowed to

practice ritae. This was also done to encourage PCs to rise in the ranks of the Hierarchy.

    Q. What happened to all the Black Hand Status?

    A. The Sabbat does no know the inner workings of the Black Hand or care about them. As such

having status for positions held in the Black Hand made no sense in the Sabbat. They have since

been removed, and like all Factions, Black Hand members gain a status trait for declaring theirfaction.

    Q. Where is the Proven Status Trait?

    A. The Proven status system has been removed. The previous version was another fabricated

addition to the packet not based on the Minds eye theatre book. It was a problem that caused a

lot of confusion among players and storytellers. As such that entire system has been removed

and Proven has simply become another possible reputation status and that is all.

    Q. So what does Status mean exactly?

    A. Besides the systems represented above, Status allows you to properly gage how much

someones voice matters in the Sabbat. While a 1 status trait newly made Sabbat has littleground to stand on compared to the veteran 12 status Bishop, it does not mean he cant say his

peace. It simply means he is less likely to be taken seriously or have more authority then thatBishop. Think of it more as a gauge to tell how you should be role-playing with a person in

    terms of respect.

    Q. How does the Free Status Trait Assamites and Lasombra get work under this system?

    A. The free status trait granted by a clan advantage does not allow you to go over the maximum

allowed status. It simply is a bonus status trait they get to start with and do not have to earn IC.However they also can not ever lose this free status trait as long as they are members of the

    Sabbat.

    Q. Im confused, what is the difference of True Sabbat versus someone who isnt?

    A. True Sabbat are the actual members of the sect. They are protected by the code of Milan, areconsidered equal in the sect, can rise to any political position, and may perform and partiake in

the Vaulderie. A True Sabbat member is actually someone who is part of the sect. A

Shovelhead or non Initiated member of the sect, is a vampire who one day hopes to undergo his

creation rites and fully join the sect. These vampires enjoy none of the benefits listed above that

True Sabbat do. So much so that a Shovelhead can be killed by any True Sabbat for any reason.A Shovelheads best hope is to be taken in by a Pack and given the ignoblis ritae of Allegiance.

Shovelheads who are under the allegiance riate are generally less likely to be killed just because

then those who do not have it. Needless to say either a vampire is Sabbat or he isnt. There is nomiddle ground.

    Q. What is the Sabbat Clergy?

    A. The Sabbat Clergy are members of the Sabbat who practice and perform the Ritae. The first

position that does this is Pack Priest. The positions that are considered members of the clergy

are as follows: Pack Priest (Including Ordained Priest), Bishop, Archbishop, Priscus, Cardinal,

members of the Consistory (this includes the Seraphim) and the Regent. These cainites are theones considered to be the teachers, practitioners, and leaders of the Ritae and all matters spiritual

within the sect (including the paths of enlightenment).
