ROV HANDLING & TMS SYSTEMS

Most ROV systems larger than a Falcon will be supplied with a Launch and Recovery System (LARS) that generally comprises a skid mounted ’A’ frame, winch, Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) and Sheave. A lock latch or snubber/rotator can be added and, on re-quest, a crane base system can be supplied.

The alternative to ’Free Swimming’ an ROV is the use of a TMS (Tether Management System) to deploy an ROV to the working depth. This option adds an element of cost to your investment in an ROV system but offers a number of significant benefits including:

• Eliminating the effect of drag on a long length of surface tended umbilical.

• Providing protection to the ROV garaged in the TMS during launch and recovery, particularly as it passes through the splash zone.

• Increasing the speed of travel to and from the working depth. The speed of the lift winch and not the rate of dive of the ROV now determines the speed of launch and recovery.

• Achieving greater accuracy of deployment to the work site.

• Providing a safe haven to park the ROV at depth between tasks.

SEAEYE TMS

This garage-style system uses a bail arm arrangement to spool tether on and off a fixed drum without the additional cost of incorporating a slip ring.

Up to 250 metres of tether can be accommodated which is remotely con-trolled by the ROV pilot. The Type 8’s improved mechanism and stainless steel frame make it virtually maintenance free.

SEAEYE TMS 8

The TMS 10 has an innovative shuttle drum that moves side to side of a fixed power sheave which greatly improves tether life. The stainless steel main frame of this garage TMS is fully adjustable allowing for easy adjust-ment to accommodate varying sizes of ROV mounted tool skids.

UNDERWATER SURVEILLANCE AND RECONNAISSANCE

The growing demand for AUVs able to handle challenging underwater surveys is understandable. Compared to traditional solutions such as divers and ship based or towed sonars, AUVs warrant superior levels of personal safety, cost-efficiency and versatility generating savings in terms of time and money.

Saab offers a range of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) for underwater surveys missions that can be either autonomously, remotely operated or both from a ship or the shore.

Highly suited for underwater survey appli-cations are the AUV62 and the Double Eagle SAROV, both warranting high levels of per-

formance, manoeuvrability and flexibility.

OFFSHORE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY > AUV62

AUV62

The AUV62 equipped with high-resolution sonar system is well suited to performing general reconnaissance and surveillance missions, such as searching for small ob-jects and recording their positions as well as generating the corresponding sensor raw data for further action or information purposes.

The AUV62 is a modularised system that gives maximum flexibility for configuring the system for specific missions and needs. It can perform:

• seabed mapping• object reconnaissance• environmental monitoring• sub-bottom mapping

Using an AUV62 is a very cost-effective solu-tion compared to the traditional use of a ship with a bottom-mounted or towed sensor.

The AUV62 vehicle can be launched from stationary platforms at sea, as well as from surface ships, or from the shore.

The AUV62 vehicle is normally recovered in the same way it is launched, i.e. from a statio-nary platform, surface ship, or shore-based launcher. It can however be recovered by any of these, regardless of how it is launched.

For surface ship recovery, a specially de-signed docking device retrieves the vehicle in the water and winches it back to the launching chute.

On completion of recovery, the turnaround time to re-launch the vehicle for the next mission is normally 4 hours for a total recharge cycle. Without total recharge, the turnaround time is cut to approximately 30 minutes.

Key facts:• Area Coverage Rate: ~2.5 km2/h• Sonar Resolution: better than 4x4 cm* (practical)• Swath Width: 2 x 200 m (high resolution)

*) Resolution is range-independent within the swath width.

SEABED MAPPING

Using a Payload Module equipped with a MBES (Multi Beam Echo Sounder), the seabed profile scanned by the AUV62 vehicle is continuously recorded during the mission, serving as a basis for subsequent seabed map generation. The accuracy of the mapping data fully complies with IHO

standards (International Hydrographic Organization). Thanks to the high area coverage performed, the AUV62 becomes a very attractive and cost effective solution compared to the traditional way of using a survey ship.

SUB-BOTTOM MAPPING

By supplying the Payload Module with a Sub-bottom Profiler, the structure of the sediment layers below the seabed can be categorized and documented.

The addition of a MBES to the same mo-dule enables the study of the change of the seabed structure over time, relative to the firm basement.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

The Payload Module for Environmental Monitoring is equipped with a number of different sensors for physical, chemical and biological monitoring of the under-water environment. The AUV62 System can perform autonomous, long endurance environmental monitoring over large areas without supervision.

Physical data such as conductivity, tem-perature and density are measured as a standard, while sensors for other parameters can be added on request. The sensor for dissolved oxygen, that can be an important indicator for environmentally healthy condi-tions, is one example while a water sampler for biological monitoring is another.

OBJECT RECONNAISSANCE

The AUV62 is designed to operate autono-mous and perform long-term endurance object reconnaissance missions.

During a mission, images of detected ob-jects are transmitted back to surface ships and helicopters on demand, for on-line pre-evaluation.

DOUBLE EAGLE SAROV

For reconnaissance and surveillance mis-sions as well as underwater tasks such as riser and anchor chain inspection, Saaboffers the Double Eagle SAROV, which is ahybrid ROV/AUV capable of performingboth autonomous and remote operations.

The SAROV has hovering capability andextremely high manoeuvrability, 360 de-grees in pitch and roll.

The SAROV can be launched from sta-tionary platforms at sea, as well as from surface ships, or from the shore.

The SAROV vehicle is normally recovered

in the same way it is launched, i.e. from a stationary platform, surface ship, or shore-based launcher. It can however be recove-red by any of these, regardless of how it is launched.

The Dock and Release Mechanism gives the capability to start operating SAROV in ROV mode and pass to autonomous mode by releasing the tether.

After having performed the autonomous mission, the vehicle re-docks with the tether again, under water, without retrieving the vehicle to the surface and giving the system almost unlimited operation time.

Saab offers a vehicle that • Can perform Medium-term autono mous missions and/or be operated via tether • Is very stable vehicle capable of performing high resolutions sensor surveys • Can be equipped with camera, tools etc

The SAROV can be equipped with • A number of different tools and accessories that may be mounted to the vehicle • External video cameras and scanning sonar • Forward Looking Sonar • Multibeam Echosound • Side Scan Sonar (SSS) • Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS)
