Introduction
• What is SA Geodata and what does it hold
• What can I access from SA Geodata within SARIG
• Recent developments within SARIG
• How to use web services in ArcGIS and MapInfo
• What is coming up
2 Department of State Development
SA Geodata
The availability of precompetitive geoscientific information is key to reducing exploration risk.
• SA’s primary geoscientific data repository for exploration data
• Data largely derived from industry reporting requirements and government exploration programs
• Considerable effort to ensure consistency of data • Delivered through SARIG

Drill rig mounted on Army surplus Centurion tank near Mt. Painter
What’s Available – Rock Samples
Almost 1,400,000 rock samples
• Location and description
• Geochemistry
• Biostratigraphy
• Petrology
• References and images
6 Department of State Development

What’s New?
Creative Commons – CC-BY
All Department of State Development minerals data available via SARIG is now licenced under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia
Greater certainty around use of the data and your rights
Data can be used for any purpose provided you acknowledge DSD as the original source
10 Department of State Development
Base Maps and Transparency
11 Department of State Development
Multiple base maps Custom map transparency
Core Library Drillholes
12 Department of State Development
Depth to Basement
Significant increase in the coverage of depth to basement data
13 Department of State Development
Link to Groundwater Data
14 Department of State Development
Web Services SARIG spatial data is now available via web services
‘Live’ link to DSD spatial data (always using latest available data)
Can be used directly in most GIS software
Two types:
1. Web Map Services (WMS)
2. Web Feature Services (WFS) 15 Department of State Development
WWW.tf?
WMS vs WFS
WMS Provides a ‘picture’ of the data
Basic attribution is available
Fast to download
Can’t be queried
Map display can’t be configured (eg symbols, labels)
16 Department of State Development
WFS Provides direct access to data
Exactly the same as having the data stored in GIS database
Can be queried
Map display fully configurable
Slower to download
Accessing Web Services in SARIG
Right click on the layer group heading in the Map Layers (eg Drillholes) and select ‘Group Download’

Loading a WFS in ArcGIS (v10.x)
To add a WFS to ArcGIS you must first install the ArcGIS Data Interoperability Extension
This is done via setup.exe from the installation media
See ArcGIS help file for instructions
Tip – search Installing the Data Interoperability Extension
