WMS Provides a ‘picture’ of the data

Basic attribution is available

Fast to download

Can’t be queried

Map display can’t be configured (eg symbols, labels)


WFS Provides direct access to data

Exactly the same as having the data stored in GIS database

Can be queried

Map display fully configurable

Slower to download

Accessing Web Services in SARIG

Right click on the layer group heading in the Map Layers (eg Drillholes) and select ‘Group Download’

To add a WFS to ArcGIS you must first install the ArcGIS Data Interoperability Extension

This is done via setup.exe from the installation media

Expand ‘Interoperability Connections’ and double click ‘Add Interoperability Connection’ Click the Format browse button Select WFS Paste WFS URL from SARIG Click Parameters button

In the ‘Parameters’ box scroll down to ‘Constraints’ and click the ‘Feature Types’ browse button Check the boxes for the features you wish to display Click OK on ‘Select Feature Types’ box and then ‘Parameters’ box
