SA Geodata

The availability of precompetitive geoscientific information is key to reducing exploration risk.

• SA’s primary geoscientific data repository for exploration data

• Data largely derived from industry reporting requirements and government exploration programs

• Considerable effort to ensure consistency of data • Delivered through SARIG

Web Services SARIG spatial data is now available via web services

‘Live’ link to DSD spatial data (always using latest available data)

Can be used directly in most GIS software

Two types:

1. Web Map Services (WMS)

2. Web Feature Services (WFS) 15 Department of State Development

WMS vs WFS

WMS Provides a ‘picture’ of the data

Basic attribution is available

Fast to download

Can’t be queried

Map display can’t be configured (eg symbols, labels)

16 Department of State Development

WFS Provides direct access to data

Exactly the same as having the data stored in GIS database

Can be queried

Map display fully configurable

Slower to download

Loading a WFS in ArcGIS (v10.x)

To add a WFS to ArcGIS you must first install the ArcGIS Data Interoperability Extension

This is done via setup.exe from the installation media

See ArcGIS help file for instructions

Tip – search Installing the Data Interoperability Extension
