Message from the Principal’s Desk:

Dear Calhoun Families,      It’s hard to believe that we’re entering the holiday season.  Thanksgiving is the time of year we all reflect on our many blessings.  Although life is filled with many challenges, this is the time of the year we are grateful for family and friends, our faith, our homes, our freedoms, and much more!         Our faculty and staff would like to wish you and your family a “Happy Thanksgiving!” We appreciate you and the many ways you support our school.   Shirley Buford, PrincipalCalhoun Elementary Principal

The 2nd 6 weeks has flown by!  We went on our first field trip to the Fire

Station, Library and Kiroli Park.  It was so much fun!   We have been talking about our community and community

helpers.  We also have been talking about Autumn and the changes it makes in our community.  We have studied pine cones, acorns, pumpkins and the many colors of fallen leaves.

We are learning to count to 20.  We have covered these letters: B, b, C, c, D, d, E, e, G ,g, K, k, O, o, P, p, T, t.  Please work with your child on these letters and letter sounds so that they can have a firm foundation for Kindergarten.

We have had a very exciting month here on the Kindergarten hall.  We started the month off with our very first field trip to Wild Country Safari Park where we explored the park, got to pet and feed buffalo, pigs, llamas, and even zebras!  It hasn’t all been just fun and games though, our Kinders have been hard at work learning to count to 20, how to identify the basic shapes, and even how to read and spell short CVC words like tip and can.  The school year is going spectacularly, with even more to look forward to in the coming months.

The school year is in full swing as we move into the third six weeks.   Beginning this grading period, we will start using the standard letter grades (A, B,C, D, and F) instead of S’s.  This is because our grades will start counting towards being promoted to the first grade.  Our students have grown accustomed to our routines and procedures, and they are more than ready for this transition in grading.  We will also be celebrating Grandparents’ Day this month.  This is an exciting event and one that we encourage everyone to attend.  On November 15th, grandparents, parents, and loved ones are invited to eat lunch with their kindergarteners.  We will also be going on our second field trip in December to the Children’s Museum where we will explore, learn, and hear a story

from Mrs. Clause herself!  With all of this excitement going on, it is important that our students keep their conduct grades up.  Remember: students with a low conduct grade are not allowed to attend our fieldtrips.  Please continue to work with your students at home and remind them to always be the very best version of themselves by following our BRAVE 5 every day.

First grade has been so fun and fabulous!  We have been very busy learning this 2nd 6 weeks. Being in first grade means more responsibility and we are all doing a great job being the best Little Braves we can be.

In Reading, we have been reading about different kinds of communities and the people that help make our communities great places to live. During this time, we learned how firefighters keep us safe and help our community. Our classes were able to attend the Fire Safety House where we learned about the fireman’s gear, kitchen safety, and getting out of a burning house to our meeting place. We have also been learning about nonfiction and informational texts. We are practicing very hard to become better readers and writers every day. In Math, we have been practicing writing to 50 and learning our addition/subtraction facts of 0 to 3. We have learned many strategies to help us add and subtract such as using number bonds, related facts, and double facts.   During Red Ribbon Week, we loved seeing all the students dressing up each day and pledging to be Drug Free. Also, our Fall Parties were so much fun! Thank you to all of the parents that helped make these events a success.  Papa Simpson’s farm was so entertaining. We even got a pumpkin to bring home. We will be going to the ballet at the end of November and know we will have just as much fun!   We look forward to the rest of 2018 in first grade and all of the holiday festivities.  Thank you for all you do!

SENSATIONAL SECOND GRADERS

Second graders have been working diligently the first and second six

weeks.  It is hard to believe we have already completed two six weeks

of school!  In our Reading series, we have been reading stories about

Animals.  One of our favorite stories from the second six weeks was “Baby Bears”! We loved discovering how animal offspring had characteristics similar to their parents.  We even talked about our inherited characteristics from our own parents!  We also are continuing to practice our fluency and accuracy.  We have been practicing in class and at home, so we can rock the DIBELS test!

Second graders are becoming whiz kids in Math!  We have continually been working hard on our new math strategies and skills presented in iReady Math.  During the second six weeks, we have learned to solve two-step word problems, determine even and odd numbers, and reviewed place value. We have learned how to use an open number line, make a nearest ten, and other strategies to solve two digit addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping.  Super second graders always like a challenge!

Second six weeks was also a lot of fun!  We were fortunate to go to the Wildlife Safari Park in Delhi.  We saw all kinds of mammals!  We were able to feed and pet all kinds of animals!  Many of us were able to see some animals we had read about in our Accelerated Reader books, so it was a thrill to see them in real life! It was an experience that will last a lifetime!

It has been a fun learning experience these first two six weeks.  We will be doing more things to get us ready for 3rd grade in the coming weeks.   Ready or not, 3rd six weeks here we come!

Our cafeteria looks great each week with the new work on our Brag Boards! Little Braves keep working hard on your daily work for your time to shine!

Stay tuned for the Mid-Year Celebration; our theme has been decided and planning is underway! Keep up the good behavior so you can earn your invite to the celebration.  School wide we have been learning the Seven Habits of Happy Kids. Shout-out to the Red Ribbon Committee for a fun filled week!

First and Second graders have been gobbling up Accelerated Reader points in the library and classrooms.  They have done a great job reading AR books and taking quizzes.  Students, who met their AR goal, attended the AR Art party. Miss Jenny from the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe helped the students make a turkey puppet to take home. The following students reached their AR goal for the second 6 weeks:
