STRATEGIES FOR
TEACHING READING
Amanda Gafkjen
Lincoln Middle School
7th Grade Reading/English
TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED: Teaching Novels and incorporating them into
different content areas
Creating and setting up a successful classroom library
Methods to get students interested in reading independently
My favorite Young Adult book choices
TEACHING NOVELS AND INCORPORATING THEM INTO OTHER CONTENT AREAS
NOVELS I HAVE TAUGHT IN THE PAST:
City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith
One Fat Summer by Robert Lipsyte
Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch
Some novels have worked for me better than others for many different reasons:
Content or subject of book
Action level, excitement of storyline
Read aloud vs. read as a class
Up to date/current novels vs. older/classics
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR NEXT NOVEL
Look at what your school has to offer Research the next big book in Young Adult
Literature Do some reading yourself; try to read from
the perspective of the students in your classes
Once you choose your next book, find a way to build a class set if you do not already have access to one Student donations with incentives http://www.donorschoose.org/
NOVEL PACKETS
Read the book yourself Make notes as you read for things such as:
Plot Character Development Setting Discussion Questions Themes Vocabulary
*Use a different color for each element to stay organized.
*When finished, use your notes to create packet worksheets.

READING A NOVEL FOR NON-FICTION UNIT
Empty by Suzanne Weyn
Used this fictional book to get kids thinking about non-fiction topics.
Tracked gas prices and created graphs. Mapped out what the average percentage of
household income spent on gas is in each state in the U.S.
Created Earth Day pledges after learning about alternate fuels and power alternatives such as wind and solar.
REACHING SEVERAL LEARNING STYLES WHEN TEACHING A NOVEL

Make sure the lines come from books you have available to them in the library.
