manner in which I am following You. Let me strive
each day to become more and more like You in all

The heavy rains of Sunday, October 29 gave
us possession (only temporarity thank God!) of a
new body of water in our excavated North Park-
ing Lot. “Area 51” (during the week ended No-
vember 3) was temporarily re-christened “Lake
St. Michael” (or “The Sea of St. Michael” -- take
your pick) as three feet of rainwater filled the 5-
foot deep pit. By Friday morning, a clear sky,
warm weather, and a breeze from the south had
caused our short-lived sea/lake to evaporate
and enabled the crew to resume filling Area 51
with clean dirt.
Also during the past week the digging of the
trench for the new rain garden began. See the
accompanying photos of Fr. Mark with shovel in
hand and Fr. John on Mr. Reilly’s ladder. The
rain garden will run along the east - to - west
midline of the parking lot and greatly reduce the
drainage problems that we have experienced.
Finally, you’ll notice that all of the eight poles
in the North Lot were removed during the past
week (the perfectly vertical poles as well as the
leaning poles as well as the poles that obstructed
traffic).
Please pray for the progress of these repairs
and in thanks to God for our financial resources
that enable the parish to do this necessary work.

OUTREACH LIVING ROOM GETS A MAKE-OVER
Several of the parish’s Youth Altar Servers
joined with Fr. John, Fr. Mark, Altar Server
Coordinator Dotty O’Hara, and members of
the Monmouth University Catholic Campus
Ministry in October 21 for the Altar Servers’
Annual Autumn Outing: a tailgate party and
a Monmouth University football game (the
Hawks defeated Liberty University 56—39
on Homecoming Day!) Please see the ac-
companying photos.
The Altar Servers, parents, priests, and
friends enjoyed wonderful weather, a home
team victory, fellowship, and good food.
The youths of our parish who have received
their First Communion and are 10 years of
age and older are invited to contact Dotty
O’Hara (908-310-6497) to inquire about be-
coming a member of the St. Michael’s Altar
Server Team.
Altar Servers’ Annual Autumn Outing
The Living Room at the parish’s Out-
reach Center on West End Court is a
very busy place and a hub for parish
life. The Youth Group, Bible Study
Group, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar
Servers, defibrillator trainees, and
many others use the Living Room for
meetings, discussion groups, training
sessions, and so forth. The Living
Room is receiving a well deserved
make-over and freshening-up: a new
coat of paint, new carpet, and a new
sectional sofa, among other enhance-
ments. Many thanks to Vinnie and
Andrea Villa for their donated time
and efforts toward making this make-
over a reality for our parish.

St. Michael's current Bible Studies feature three different sections of the Holy Scriptures:
1. On Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in the Outreach Center and Tuesday morning after the 8:00 am Mass in the Lower
Church, participants are looking at the lives and messages of the prophets. You are invited to bring your Bible--and
bring a friend, for light refreshment and lively lessons from the Old Testament.
2. Wednesdays at 11:00 am in the Outreach Center, Bible Study participants are venturing into the exciting books of I
and II Kings. There is always room for one more in this group!
3. The BIBLE IN PLAIN ENGLISH (Pilot Program) meets in the Lower Church on Wednesdays.
Please join us in October for light refreshment and lively conversation at either of two sessions--10:30 am or 7:30 pm as
we look together at the Synoptic Gospels. We cover the entire New Testament in this Fall survey series..
Bibles are available here and new friends await you!
For more information, please leave your name and number at 732-483-0360 EXT121 and we will call you back.

How do you know what hymns to use on a weekly basis? The lastest question comes from Joe Pawlak: How do you know what hymns to use on a weekly basis? In our last installment, I provided an “immediate” sort of response based on the outer layer of the subject – a prac-tical checklist for selecting music during the various pro-cessions of the Mass. Today, I present a number of ques-tions to help you think in new directions. I hope to ex-pand your knowledge and provide alternative views to what is unknowingly unquestioned. The subject of hym-nody is wide and deep. I will answer these questions over future installments of the Music Mailbag.
Questions What is a hymn? What are the characteristics of hymns? What is the purpose of a hymn? In what circumstances are hymns used? Is the whole Mass a “macro hymn”? In other words, is the Mass one large hymn composed of many shorter hymns? How is a hymn constructed? Can a hymn be silent? Can a hymn be recited aloud without singing? Is a psalm a hymn? Is a spiritual song a hymn? Is a biblical canticle a hymn? Is a hymn a poem? Are hymns characterized by one type of musical style? Are they characterized by a certain group of styles? What does the church teach about all this?
Let me know what you think! I’d be happy to hear from you J
Please contact me at [email protected] or 732-
222-8080 if you have thoughts or questions about this or
anything else related to Sacred Music.
PATHWAY TO HEAL When you are alone:
It's important to learn to make large or small decisions
alone. There is no one to bounce your ideas off of, no one
to banter back and forth over the pros and cons. There
is only yourself to weigh the consequences of the deci-
sions.
"Is this good for me?... Is this what I really want?... Is this
what I need?...Does this direction feel right for me?...or
am I succumbing to the control and influence that I some-
times allow others to have over me."
You need to learn that you are totally in charge, the Cap-
tain of Your Ship. Believe in yourself, trust that you will
have the wisdom and the guidance from God to know
which way to go. Do not over think and do not second
guess yourself.
Please Join Us, All Are Welcomed. Our next meeting is
Thursday, October 26th at 7:00PM
(Every second and fourth Thursdays)

The Commemoration Of All The Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day)
Thursday, November 2, 2017
The Commemoration of All the Faithful
Departed (All Souls’ Day) was celebrated by
the Church throughout the world on No-
vember 2. We at St. Michael’s prayed for
our departed family members and friends
and for all the souls known only to God dur-
ing a Candlelight Mass and Musical Prelude.
Votive candles were lighted by family mem-
bers to symbolize our prayers — with Light!
— for those who have died during the past
year. The fundamental idea of All Souls’
Day is the acknowledgment of human frail-
ty. We are all sinners. The Church’s doc-
trine teaches that the prayers of the living
can aid the deceased and speed their pro-
cess of purification. These prayers are acts
of faith, hope, and charity.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord. And
let perpetual light shine upon them. May
they rest in peace.
