ST LUKE’S CHURCH

Happy New Year! I hope you had a good Christmas – we certainly enjoyed our celebrations in the Church, and hope you did too. The Crib service on Christmas Eve was a new venture for us, and one which will definitely be repeated next year.

But time moves on, and this month our thoughts turn towards Easter. We begin Lent on Ash Wednesday (14 February), which is the preparation for the celebration of Easter on 01 April. We will be holding Lent discussion groups which you are welcome to attend. Contact Rev Fran for more details (481183).

As always, we are very busy and we would like to invite you to come and join some of the activities. There will be a Jumble Sale in the Church on Saturday 24 February from 12 noon. We will happily take your unwanted items off your hands – these can be left at the back of Church under the tower, or you can contact Sandra Boone to arrange collection (480802).

The next Church Bingo will take place on Saturday 10 March - more details next time.

Gardening Tips for February

Already there are signs of the approaching Spring. Days are becoming longer, bulbs have started to appear and light levels and temperature are on the up. Most of what we will do as gardeners this month, however, will be indoors as we prepare for the season ahead. Here, then, are some activities to be getting on with for February.

1}. Clean greenhouses paying particular attention to staging, seed-trays and pots, ready for the coming growing season.

2}. When possible, complete winter digging of bare beds and cover the ground with polythene to keep off the worst of the weather and to warm up the soil ready for early sowings.

3}. Use a forcing jar or an old coal scuttle to force rhubarb for an early crop. Make sure that no light can enter from the top.

4}. Onion seed can be sown indoors now, preferably into polystyrene modules. This enables them to develop good roots for planting on. Monty Don advises sowing 4 to 6 seeds per module and transplanting the whole clump with their well-developed roots in March or April.

5}. Early varieties of potatoes should be chitted in a cool light frost-free place ready for planting out towards the end of March or earlier in pots or bags if you can keep them under glass.

6}. Again, in the greenhouse or under cover in a warm propagator, you can now begin to sow seed of cabbage (summer/autumn maturing). Leeks can also be started off in the same conditions.

7}. If you haven't already, plan your vegetable plot for this year to ensure good crop rotation and prevent pests building up in the soil.

In conclusion, a mid 16th century proverb to ponder on, particularly relevant to our county.

"February fill dyke, be it black or be it white."

Happy gardening
