LISTENING SESSION & ICE CREAM SOCIAL!!

On Sunday, August 19 at 3:00 PM in the St. Joseph Church hall we will be hosting an allparish listening session in preparation for the Archdiocesan Synod, which will take place in the spring of 2020. The listening session, which will be moderated by a member of the parish, is meant to garner feed-back from parishioners on three ques-

tions as they pertain to the archdiocese as a whole:!!

What are we doing well?!What are we doing that needs improvement?!What are we not doing at all, that we should be doing?!!

In preparation for this meeting, I am asking everyone in the parish to reflect on these three questionsagain, as they per-tain to the archdiocese as a whole, NOT to our parish specifi-cally. The responses will be compiled and sent to the archdi-ocesan synod planning committee.!!

After the listening session is concluded, we will celebrate with a parish ice cream social. !!!

Please save the date and plan to attend this important meeting, and then enjoy the company of your fellow parishioners at the social afterwards.!

RECEPTION FOR FR. AQUINAS & FIRST BLESSINGS!!

The 10AM Mass on Sunday, August 19th will be a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by Fr. Aquinas Beale, OP. There will be a reception in the St. Mary Church Hall to congratulate Fr. Aquinas on his recent ordination. Fr. Aquinas will also be be-stowing first priestly blessings during the recep-tion. All are warmly invited. !

THE GIFT OF THE PRIESTHOOD!!

“What has surprised you most about the priesthood?” I’ve been asked this question more than once in the few months since my priestly ordination this past May. It’s actually not an easy question to answer, I suppose because I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect upon ordination. Though I looked forward to cele-brating the sacraments, especially the Mass, I hadn’t reflected on what the daytoday life of a priest more specifically, of my priesthood might look like. The first time someone asked me the question, what first occurred to me was the automatic deference and respect that people give to a new priest, simp-ly because of his priesthood. Although such deference can present a temptation to pride, so far, by the grace of God, I have found it to be humbling. The fact that people who have just met me and know that I have been a priest for less than a year offer me such respect serves as a reminder that the priesthood is not about me. People turn to the priest not because of his personality or his gifts, but rather because by his ordination he has been made into “another Christ,” an instrument of God’s mercy and love. This is an indescribable gift and privilege, but it is also a weighty responsibility.!!

The weight of the priesthood regularly comes into sharp focus for me at two particular points in the Mass. The first is at the words of institution, “This is my body,” “This is the chalice of my blood.” At my first Mass of Thanksgiving in Washington the day after the ordination, a friar of our province preached a homily emphasizing the importance of these words for the priestly vocation. He reminded me that the priest must make Christ’s words his own. He must hand over his own body for the Church, he must pour out his blood in our current cultural climate, figuratively, but in other circumstances, per-haps literally for the sake of Christ’s Bride. More often than not, I meditate on this exhortation as I say the words of consecration, and I thank the Lord for his mercy, because I know that already in my brief time as a priest I have fulfilled this call at best very imperfectly.!!

The other moment in the Mass that reminds me of the weight of this call is the Lord’s Prayer. It’s a blessing that at this parish the altar is set up in “Benedictine” fashion. That is, a crucifix sits on the altar facing the priest. And so, as we pray the words, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” I look upon what that means, our Lord handing himself over on the cross, as I mirror this im-age with my hands extended in prayer. As we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” I look upon the newly consecrated elements and give thanks to God that he continues to feed us with the Bread of Life, the glorified flesh and blood of his own Son. As we ask for forgiveness, I look upon the act that made that forgiveness possible, and I am reminded that I have been called to offer that same act of love on be-half of God’s people.!!

Other aspects of priestly ministry have also moved me. The depth of devotion and repentance that I reg-ularly witness in the confessional inspires me to strive for greater holiness. The privilege of giving out first blessings to people so eager to receive them fills me with gratitude for my participation in the priesthood of Christ, the source of all blessings. The priesthood truly is a gift.!!

Though my time at St. Mary’s has been short and interrupted by various travels, I am so grateful to have

begun my priestly ministry here, and for the warmth and the kindness with which you have welcomed

me. I will think of you fondly and remember you in my prayers. Please remember me in yours as I con-

tinue to learn and to grow as a priest, striving to make my own those beautiful words of our Lord, “This is my body, this is my blood.”!

In Christ,!!
