2 DAVID THORNTON The problems of landscapepainting are infinite, especiallywhen one is trying to imposethe strictures of an individualway of seeing. My interest iswith light, its components andthe way light, colour and toneintertwine. Realism isephemeral and dependent on culture and time, butsubjective interpretation is of
the individual and my primary driver. Of course, drawing and a determined attitudetowards maintaining the discipline of drawing should never be forgotten.
2 MARGARET THORNTONColour and texture are theinfluences behind my artworks. My strong connection to silk givesme the opportunity to explore acombination of these values. Both the silk fabric and silk fibresoffer different challenges toperfect. Painting on silk fabricrequires the skill and knowledgeof how to control and manipulatethe vibrant colours on the fabricand silk threads are useful for surface embellishments. Some of my latest works are feltedpictures where I use a combination of wool and silk fibres to create landscapes in felt.Surface treatments are used for added texture and definition.

14 KARINHOTCHKINArtist and ArtEducator who hasdeveloped an apprec-iation for Naive Artafter many years ofstudy/teaching andbeing exposed to allaspects of Art. Duringthis time I explored
and experimented with this whimsical and charming form of Art and hence developedmy own Naive style. I am visually stimulated by the natural beauty that surrounds me andform a relationship with my immediate environment, the land, homes, nature, animals, plants and the landscape. My Art can also be viewed as Abstract Expressionism with astrong focus on pattern, shape, colour, design and composition, which is often executed in a playful way with a sense of joy. I make a conscious effort to not formalise my work but rather stylise it and engage my inner child.

19 GAIL DOUST KEIRLE grew up on her family farm near Manjimup, beforespending her adult life in suburban Perth. In 2005 she moved to Lesmurdie, andagain connected to the Jarrah and Marri forests which now inspire her to exploretheir beauty in watercolours. When Gail retired from full time work in 2008, she
purchased a campervan to begin travelling through andaround our amazing country. Instead of taking photosshe began painting instead, learning to stop and really
sink into her surroundings. (And meet fellow travellersfrom all over the world.) Gail’s paintings are not botanical
as such…they are interpretations of what she sees…Her insights and influences come during the manyhours of wandering, observing and collecting. And many hours of meditating, sitting in, and being in awe of our wonderful forests, deserts and waterways. Favourite inspirations come from,
honky nuts, bark, leaves, bird’s nests, lichens, mushrooms and fungi. She is continually learning to
be in tune with how things work as she pokes around and explores the details, colours, hues, shadows and
the dance within the painting she is doing. What a way to celebrate the wonders of our biodiversity!
While connecting to the flow and rhythm of seasons, she links into nature andplace and thus re-creates her sense of belonging to our earth. Painting has become a large part of her life and passion… Gail says she wants her art always to be something that: Touches… Moves… and… Inspires. Gail enjoys sharing herpassion with the many visitors to her studio and exhibitions. Contact: [email protected] • Phone: 0422 410 826

He pursued hisambition to be a full time painter andalso worked in ceramics on the Isle ofWight before emigrating to Australia. Now fortunate to have his ownpurpose built rammed earth studioin Kalamunda he is able to combine his own painting time with that of running “justpaint” art classes. His preference is acrylic although he also works in oils and pastel. Withan impatient and spontaneous style, acrylics allow him the freedom he requires. Natureand landscape have always been a major influence in his work. However, he paintswhatever stirs his emotions, especially those that rise from deep within. 11 JOHN EDEN has been ineducation for nearly thirty yearsand teaching art full time atKalamunda SHS since 2002.John’s work moves in phasesbetween portraiture, still life, abstraction and landscape. Inthe last couple of years, he hasexplored the local landscape onhis mountain bike looking foradventure and new landscapesto depict. Until very recently hewould have described himself as
a watercolourist, but Covid changed the direction. John was in Patagonia when theborders started to close. Since March he has worked mainly with charcoal picked up inthe bush. The Patagonia ‘adventure-with-a-difference’ drawing project has become abit of an obsession, but John has found it to have also sparked a period of unrivalledcreativity in his practice. He is now returning to the locations he scouted over the lastfew years with a fresh approach. In John’s studio expect a diverse spectrum of workfrom highly saturated water colour paintings to dark mood driven drawings; andexpect to see him engaging with his current fixation, experimental drawing ofabandoned cars. Studio does not have wheelchair access. I’ll work on that.Instagram @flying_pork_pies • Email: [email protected] • Phone: 0422 964 587
