The re- cent rain, of course, somewhat checked the rueh, but every train from Portland brings a good load of newcomers. The Gearhart Hotel opened on July 9 and the Seaside House on July lL The water sys- tem at Seaside has been completed throughout the town, and the work of connecting the "various stores and resi- dences with the water mains is progress- ing rapidly. (To the Editor) The people of Malheur County living in the territory proposed to be Irrigated by what la known as the "Malheur Irrigation Project.' are being continually placed In a falee light as regards their attitude towards the Govern- ment Reclamation Bureau and the work pro- posed to be done here. "Whether this la In tended to prejudice the Government officiate r against this section of Oregon or not vv cannot say, but It begins to look that way This seems to be true, not only as regar this particular section, but as regards v state. "Whenever anything is eont out tf "Washington regarding irrigation in OregoiC effort seems to be made to carry the lmprt-v- . slon that Oregon people aro lukewarm tawarial 9 the project, that they do not want lrrlgatlcnl I and that Uncle Sam with his millions must gol 1 elsewhere. 1 j From personal acquaintance with the lrrl- - 1 gators of this and other Irrigated sections of I ! Oregon I can state, without fear of successful 1 contradiction, that they are almost to a man 1 In favor of Government irrigation, and that I the impression sought to be created 13 false. 1 The people of Eastern Oregon, the section ta i be directly benefited, can be said to be unan imously in favor of tho proposition. "When Mr. Newell and his party visited Vale and Ontario recently, very few of the farmers knew of their coming. As many as did hear of the proposed visit and could pos- sibly do so, attended the meetings. At both Vale and Ontario great interest was shown In tho proposed work, and as a result of these meetings a meeting of all the peoplo Interested Is to be held at Vale on July 10, at which steps will be taken to form a Water-- users' Association. This association will be formed and everything necessary to car- rying forward the work will be arranged. The progressive Irrigators of Malheur Coun- ty are thoroughly alive to the situation and if Malheur County does not get this work it will not be the fault of its people. F. W. METCALF. NORTH BEACH.

Season Is Opening Rather Slowly-Wea- ther

Is Delightful.Although new faces are dally arriving

on the scene, the season 13 progressingrather slowly. Many of the cottages arestill unoccupied, and, as yet, hotel ac-commodations are in excess of the demand. The weather conditions, withthe exception of the last few days, havebeen delightful and beach picnics are ofdaily occurrence. The wreck of theschooner Frank W. Howe, at Seaside, seems to be the principal attraction andis visited daily by throngs of people. Thelighthouses at North Head and Canby, and the life-savi- station at OceanParle, are also regarded as pleasure re-sorts, and come in for their share ofvisitors and pleasure-seeker- s who comefrbm all parts of the beach.

People of Malheur County Anxiousfor Government Irrigation.

ONTARIO. Or., July 14. (To the Editor)The people of Malheur County living in theterritory proposed to be Irrigated by what laknown as the "Malheur Irrigation Project.'are being continually placed In a falee lightas regards their attitude towards the Govern-ment Reclamation Bureau and the work pro-posed to be done here. "Whether this la Intended to prejudice the Government officiate ragainst this section of Oregon or not vv

cannot say, but It begins to look that wayThis seems to be true, not only as regar

this particular section, but as regards vstate. "Whenever anything is eont out tf"Washington regarding irrigation in OregoiC

effort seems to be made to carry the lmprt-v-.slon that Oregon people aro lukewarm tawarial 9the project, that they do not want lrrlgatlcnl Iand that Uncle Sam with his millions must gol 1

elsewhere. 1 jFrom personal acquaintance with the lrrl- - 1

gators of this and other Irrigated sections of I !

Oregon I can state, without fear of successful 1contradiction, that they are almost to a man 1In favor of Government irrigation, and that Ithe impression sought to be created 13 false. 1The people of Eastern Oregon, the section ta ibe directly benefited, can be said to be unanimously in favor of tho proposition.

"When Mr. Newell and his party visitedVale and Ontario recently, very few of thefarmers knew of their coming. As many asdid hear of the proposed visit and could pos-sibly do so, attended the meetings. At bothVale and Ontario great interest was shownIn tho proposed work, and as a result ofthese meetings a meeting of all the peoploInterested Is to be held at Vale on July 10,at which steps will be taken to form a Water--

users' Association. This association willbe formed and everything necessary to car-rying forward the work will be arranged. The progressive Irrigators of Malheur Coun-ty are thoroughly alive to the situation andif Malheur County does not get this work itwill not be the fault of its people.
