Plus Fusion is the only ceramic non- stick with a legal letter verifying that it is compliant with the EU and US FDA for food contact. Since then, Whitford research and development chemists have been working to improve the original version, and have now done so in three important ways: 1. Better release: Ceramic nonsticks by defini- tion of their unique chemistry have never had the release of today’s PTFE-based nonsticks (PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid), but Fusion is getting close. The chart to the left shows how new Fusion compares to old Fusion and a typical leading ceramic nonstick sold at retail. New Fusion has significantly better release than all other ceramic nonsticks we’ve tested. 2. Better stain resistance: Ceramic coatings as a category tend to have good stain resistance. But new technology has taken Fusion’s ability to resist staining of all kinds even further. Recent tests using tomato sauce, boiled down in a Fusion pan for 15 minutes, show how resistant Fusion is to this substance notorious for its staining (see photos below). 3. Improved gloss: Fusion’s improved tech- nology enables an extra-dense surface that offers several benefits. One, of course, is the improved stain resistance men- tioned. Another is a surface so com- pact, so devoid of surface irregular- ities, that it gives a remarkably high gloss — higher than all other ceram- ic nonsticks tested. This means that any pots or pans coated with Fusion have much more eye-catching shine at point of sale. The chart below shows how new Fusion compares with three other ceramic nonstick coatings, including the current leading brand. Whitford launched Fusion in2011 with important ad-vantages over other “ce-

ramic” nonsticks, such as a simpler, more user-friendly chemistry thatsimplifies application (most ceram-ics involve complicated chemistry).Plus Fusion is the only ceramic non-stick with a legal letter verifying thatit is compliant with the EU and USFDA for food contact.

Since then, Whitford researchand development chemists havebeen working to improve the original version, andhave now done so in three important ways:

1. Better release: Ceramic nonsticks by defini-

tion of their unique chemistry have never had therelease of today’s PTFE-based nonsticks (PTFEhas the lowest coefficient of friction of any knownsolid), but Fusion is getting close. The chart to theleft shows how new Fusion compares to old Fusionand a typical leading ceramic nonstick sold at retail.

New Fusion has significantly better releasethan all other ceramic nonsticks we’ve tested.

2. Better stain resistance: Ceramic coatingsas a category tend to have good stain resistance. But new technology has taken Fusion’s ability toresist staining of all kinds even further.

Recent tests using tomato sauce, boiled downin a Fusion pan for 15 minutes, show how resistantFusion is to this substance notorious for its staining(see photos below).

3. Improved gloss: Fusion’s improved tech-nology enables an extra-dense surface that offers

several benefits. One, of course, isthe improved stain resistance men-tioned. Another is a surface so com-pact, so devoid of surface irregular-ities, that it gives a remarkably highgloss — higher than all other ceram-ic nonsticks tested. This means thatany pots or pans coated with Fusionhave much more eye-catching shineat point of sale.

The chart below shows hownew Fusion compares with threeother ceramic nonstick coatings,

including the current leading brand.

Eterna, recently launched withrevolutionary (and patented)technology that provides betterrelease and, more important, longer-lasting release than any other coatingon the market, has taken another stepforward.

Now Eterna comesin a wide range of col-ors, eight of which areshown on the left. These add a new di-mension to the possi-bilities of offering cookware with adramatic difference at point-of-sale,as well as cookware that comes withbetter release and longer-lastingrelease than competitive products. The Eterna technology also pro-

vides increased resistance to staining,as well as an extra-smooth surface, which means greater shine. In addition, Whitford’s attractive

new colors for Eterna can be madewithout PFOA.The patented technology discov-

ered in the development of the Eternanonstick system led to what has beenone of the most successful productlaunches in Whitford’s history.

Launched just two yearsago (as of this writing),Eterna has been speci-fied by almost 100 ofthe world’s leadingcookware manufactur-

ers and marketers, and continues tobe one of the top choices for high-endcookware. New formulations have led to the

development of the Eterna technolo-gy in nonstick coatings for use onbakeware products. For more information, please

The winds and seas that dominatethe 70 islands that make up theOrkneys has shaped the life of thosewho live there as well as the islandsthemselves — which is evident fromthe lack of trees and crops.

The Orkney Islands are part ofan archipelago of 70 islands 16 kilo-meters off the coast of northernScotland.

Despite being on the outerfringes of the British Isles, theseislands are producing cutting-edgewave and tidal technology, demon-strating innovation that's putting theUK on the map as a global leader, and regenerating island communitiesby bringing new jobs, new skills andcreating a strong supply chain.

If Scotland is the envy of Europewhen it comes to renewable energy, then Orkney is the envy of Scotland.

Orkney-based companies andthe European Marine Energy Centre(EMEC) are celebrated for theirwork in the wave and tidal sector.EMEC is the first of its kind to offerdevelopers the opportunity to testfull-scale prototypes in the sea.

“Throw the switch!”

On Thursday, 11 August 2011,Atlantis Resources successfully con-nected its 1 megawatt AR1000 tidalturbine to the United Kingdom’sNational Grid at the EuropeanMaritime Energy Centre’s test site inthe Orkney Islands.

The AR1000 becomes Scot-land’s first grid-connected, commer-cial-scale tidal turbine, marking acrucial milestone in the developmentof the marine energy industry.

Installed at a depth of about 50meters, and operating in a maximumtidal flow of almost 4 meters per sec-ond (equivalent to 7.8 knots), theAR1000 builds on the success of itspredecessor, the AK1000.

Tidal turbines work like anunderwater wind turbine. Instead ofair, the tides’ ebb and flow force theblades to spin, which rotate the tur-bine which in turn powers an electri-cal generator.

The AK1000 specified Xylan, which was used in the connectingflange between the power nacelleand its mounting assembly.

The newer AR1000 tidal turbine(shown in the photo above) usesXylan 1424, this time on the heavyM30 bolts and washers that retainthe hatch covers. Xylan 1424 waschosen in preference to painting witha high-build marine system sinceXylan permits the easy removal andrefitting of the coated metal parts asit provides excellent resistance to thesevere corrosive atmosphere towhich the parts are constantlyexposed.

All the bolts and washers usedwere supplied and coated by a mem-ber of Whitford’s Quality ApprovedCoater program, which is restrictedto applicators who have the rightequipment, have solid experience inthe application of Whitford coatings, and whose quality control meetsWhitford’s rigorous standards.

For complete details of thisremarkable story, please visit theAtlantis Resources website atatlantisresourcescorporation.com.
