Abstract

In this article I have attempted to give some information about ways of transmission

of Greek and Latin manuscripts and to give some explanation about textual criticism,

which is to follow back the threads of transmission and to try to restore the texts as

closely as possible to the form which they originally would have. To be brief, any

attempt to restore the original text is divided into two stages. The first stage is

recensio. The recensio is to reconstruct from the evidence of the surviving manuscripts

the earliest recoverable form of the text that lies behind them. After recensio, one can

try to establish the relationships of the existing manuscripts to each other and eliminate

some important manuscripts from those which have little value. This process is

eliminatio. After eliminatio, one goes forward to establish relationship in the form of

family tree of those remained manuscripts (stemma codicum). Now then the Second

stage begins with critical process, in which a transmitted text should be examined and

one must decide whether the transmitted text is authentic or not (examinatio). If not,

one can try to emend it (emendatio). Anyway, the ultimate goal of textual criticism

is the production of a “critical edition”, which contains a text most closely

approximating the original, which is accompanied by an apparatus criticus, that

presents variants of manuscripts’ transmission with abbreviated names of manuscripts

and of editors through sigla. etc. Finally to say, this paper is a short synopsis about

the philological methodology in classical scholarship. Its aims are also simple. On the

one side, so I wish, this synopsis can be a useful guideline for translations and making

commentary of classical text in Korea. On the other hand, so I hope, a further

comparative discussion between the philological methodology of “classical scholarship”

in “western world (Europe, USA)” and that of “eastern world (China, Japan, Korea)”

can begin with my synopsis.
