Well done to all of the 100+ students
who performed in the Spring Explosion Concert on Tuesday 8th March. The event was a truly enjoyable and successful occasion for all involved. The contrast in pieces performed, from classical, jazz, pop, Gospel, easy listening, and film music was absolutely fabulous. Feedback from those in the audience has been wonderful, including parents, staff, and members of the Governing Body. We have even had
requests for copies of the concert on DVD! Well done and thank you to all the choristers (Junior Gospel and Cupcake Choirs) who sang at the St Bernadette Talent Show & Spring Concert on Wednesday 2nd March. As well as being a lovely opportunity to visit our neighbours, this was also a great opportunity to showcase our talents. Mrs Hogan (headteacher of the school) sent a lovely email of thanks, including the following message:“A big thank you to your
wonderful girls and staff for giving up their time to join us for our Talent Show. The girls really set the standard for what turned out to be a great evening.” Well done to all students who have taken ABRSM/Trinity music instrument and singing exams this term. Everyone has their fingers crossed that the results will be a good reward for all your hard work and efforts preparation.

SpringExplosion Concert
Headteacher’s CommentDear Parents,
As we approach Easter, we have been looking at how we might do as Jesus instructed us and “Take up your cross and follow Me.” To that end we believe that a key characteristic of a La Retraite student is that they have integrity and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute, that they speak up and judge fairly; and defend the rights of the poor, (Proverbs 31; 8-9). We are always very impressed by the large number of students who take these words to heart, raising a considerable amount for different charities, especially all the Year 10 Citizenship students. A particular mention must go to Venuse, Eden, Kelechi, Shantavia, Benjamina, Joy, Tamieka, and Guadalupe (Year 11 students), who will be giving up some of their summer holidays, going to Lourdes with Ms Greene, volunteering to look after sick and elderly pilgrims.
They are currently trying to raise money to support the pilgrimage. If you would like to help them, you are welcome to make a donation via the school reception (in a clearly marked envelope). It has been a short but packed half term. There have been a number of excellent trips, including a football leadership course at Stamford Bridge, theatre visits, University visits and a variety of conferences. Ms Ungaro took the Year 10 Historians to the trenches – and back! At each of these events, the students have excelled and shown what fantastic young people we are privileged to
work with. P a r t i c u l a r congratulations must go to the football and netball teams who have had many successes – the Year 7 Netball team scoring a notable win over our arch rivals Streatham and Clapham High School. The Spring Explosion Festival was an outstanding event and was a testimony to the hard work of Mrs Nash, Mr Owens, their team, and all the students. Finally, a special word for Shantavia in Year 11. We were extremely proud of her thought-provoking contribution to Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour – the tweets about her report from across the country were very impressive. We wish you and your families a relaxing Easter holiday and we look forward to seeing the students back on Monday 11th April, refreshed and keen to keep up the hard work. - Dominic Malins Headteacher

World Book Day is a celebration of
authors, illustrators, books, and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration
of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. Here there are some activities we did during the World Book Week. - Mrs Fernandez Librarian

Drama News
Congratulations to Year 12 students
of Drama and Theatre Studies. They have successfully completed their AS examination by presenting powerful monologues (and one duologue) and an energetic group scripted piece, ‘East End Tales’. The ordeal was most challenging as not only one, but four examiners, were assessing them! Thankfully all ran smoothly and students did their utmost to present their talents and hard work. My Europe Workshop
15 students aged 15-20 at La Retraite will
have the opportunity to take part in a workshop on My Europe in June 2016, which workshop consists of two 6-hour days. On day one, Europe Day, the students have the unique opportunity to meet renowned experts
on European affairs. High-profile figures from politics, economics, and academia share their personal and professional perspective on Europe, and engage in discussion with the students afterwards. Day one results in students choosing a European topic of personal interest. On day two, Journalism Day, representatives of the partner media present their profession and share their knowledge of news writing. The students learn how to effectively communicate their
European topics. Students are trained by the editors of the respective media partners on how to express their visions of the future through writing. All contributions are part of a writing contest, whose winners become members of the pan-European Youth Council for the Future. P o r t u g u e s e - s p e a k i n g students at La Retraite will have the opportunity to be trained by professionals on providing subtitle translations to popular BBC and ITV broadcasts in native languages. This will provide bilingual students and their families with an opportunity to enrich their own communities, improve integration, and feel connected whilst improving their own knowledge of their mother language. In addition, students
will be trained in using translation software and the process of subtitling. The first training will start in April 2016. Please see Mrs Jarrett or go online to equalitytime.co.uk to learn more.
Taiwanese Penpals
La Retraite School was twinned with a school
in Taiwan as part of the Rivers of the World Art project. Although the project is now finished, the students in Taiwan are still keen to exchange letters with students at La Retraite.
30 students in Year 7 will have the opportunity to write and communicate with students in Taiwan. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about another culture. For more information see Mrs Jarrett. - Mrs Jarrett Head of EAL
Young Interpreter
Fun in Science Club!
At La Retraite, like in many schools, we have
students who regularly translate or interpret for parents. Young interpreters make a really important contribution to family life and school life and at La Retraite we like to celebrate the fantastic job that they do. If you are a young interpreter you may feel that the time, effort, and energy you put into helping other people is not recognised. This is not the case at La Retraite as we believe that it is excellent that you can speak two
languages and help other people out. We also know that many young interpreters sometimes find the job difficult and stressful, even when they are happy and proud to help out. Sarah Crafter and Humera Iqbal from University College London
have been working with a small group of our young interpreters in the school to look at what life is like for them. This group are going to have the opportunity to take part in some art workshops, which will become part of an exhibition. The exhibition will visit the school in June or July. Spring Term Activities
Spring Term at Science Club has been a busy
one! The girls have made fossils, erupted volcanoes, examined Mr Shaw’s Venus fly traps, dissected plants, created art using chromatography,
explosively reacted alkali metals with water, and even watched the film ‘Gravity’. We will end this term with an egg-citing Easter egg hunt!
The Chickens Are Coming!
In April, the Science Club will be caring
for some eggs for 2 weeks as they hatch into chicks. We will be closely monitoring the chicks and creating a photo-diary from our observations. All girls

Amnesty International
Lambeth Model United NationsCompetition
La Retraite students visited Amnesty
International on 1st March 2016. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage in contemporary global politics ranging from the Syrian refugee crisis to human rights abuses across the world. Dan Jones, one of Amnesty’s founding members, held an interactive presentation for the students and they subsequently had the opportunity to write a letter campaigning for the release of a political
prisoner from a range of case studies presented. Our students took an active part and participated in this activity with passion and enthusiasm. The visit was truly inspiring and many students expressed an interest to pursue volunteering opportunities with Amnesty. - Mrs Glusica Teacher of Social Science
On Wednesday 9th March, a group of
girls went to Evelyn Grace Academy to compete in the Lambeth Model United Nations competition. The La Retraite girls were delegates from Angola and New Zealand and represented these countries on three different committees. The day was a great success and allowed the girls to develop their confidence in their public speaking skills. Natalia Morgan was excellent and won a
prize for her exceptional contributions as delegate from Angola on the Environmental Plan Committee. Well done to all girls who were involved! - Miss Drummond Teacher of English
Visit to Stamford Bridge
On Tuesday 23rd February 2016, a
number of La Retraite’s football team had the privilege to visit Stamford Bridge, the home-ground of Chelsea Football club. There we received a very warm welcome from Luke, our own personal tour guide for the day. He first gave us a little background into how Chelsea Football Club came about, as we sat in the stadium where fans, week-after-week watch Chelsea play against the other Premier league teams. Next stop the Press Conference room, where the many different media channels hold post-match interviews with the managers and captains of the team. We were then very fortunate to visit Chelsea’s changing room and the away-teams’ changing room. Of course, Chelsea’s changing room was more
state-of-the-art, and as you can see each player has their own personalised locker. Cesc Fabregas’ locker was open! We then walked down the tunnel to enter the pitch. They even had the sound effects playing as though there were 41,000 fans in the stadium, which was amazing! We then had the privilege of sitting where the managers and players would sit on the side-line of the pitch. The seats were very comfy. Finally our tour was
over with a few more facts about the different seats and the amount the fans pay depending on the section of the stadium they sit in. Then we were off to the Planning Room with the Chelsea coaches, who have guided us on how to plan a football tournament for the competition we will be hosting to twelve Primary Schools in July 2016. - Rejoice Sillah 10 Drexel
